The twenty-first century will undoubtedly represent ahigh point for human civilization in the developmentand utilization of knowledge on an unprecedentedscale. We are living in a period of rapid change whenskills and expertise in several fields are expandingacross the globe while the depth and rigor of educationneeded to create these crosses new frontiers.
The TERI University has been set up as an institution ofhigher learning to meet this set of needs for a rapidlydeveloping India. But, as a global institution, while itdraws strength from the ethos and traditions of India, the University reaches out in sourcing knowledge fromacross the globe.
In its 12 years of functioning, the TERI University hasachieved significant progress in creating an institutionof higher learning with a strong foundation of researchand innovation. The multi-disciplinary nature of theUniversity’s programmemes draws talented and brightyoung students who contribute to the vibrantatmosphere existing in the University.
A particular unique strength of the TERI Universityalso comes from its association with TERI as a researchinstitute of distinction, because this provides fertileopportunities for faculty from the University to workon a diverse range of meaningful research projects andfor the students to gain valuable experience workingon these.
While the TERI University is in the early stages of itsexciting journey, the richness of programmemes thathave been launched already and those that are in themaking present a refreshing flavour of innovation andestablish a strong relevance for addressing thechallenges of tomorrow.

M Tech Placements 2012 | Department of Energy and Environment 1
Every branch of engineering has its own genesis, growth, andstabilization. Renewable energy engineering is yet to establishitself as a viable branch; However, this is likely to happensooner than later.
The Nobel Peace Prize for the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panelon Climate Change) is the ultimate recognition of the fact thatclimate change is the result of rapid development and thatthere are no viable solutions other than sustainable energysolutions. There has been an increasingly growing interest inthe study of science, engineering and technology of sustainableenergy in recent years.
The Department of Energy and Environment at TERIUniversity offers the following programmes:M Tech (Renewable Energy Engineering and Management),Ph D (Energy and Environment)Postgraduate Diploma programme in Renewable Energy.
The M Tech programme lays the foundation of renewableenergy engineering. The department puts stresses on conceptdevelopment and field implementation and exposes thestudents to live projects.
Experts from the industry are invited to interact with studentsand make them aware of the practicalities and industryrequirements. The students are also trained to acquiremanagerial skills. The faculty members of the department areactively involved in projects and industrial consultancy.
The department prepares students to tackle the globalchallenges of climate change and sustainable developmentthrough a well-designed and intensive curriculum. Studentsfrom the previous batch have interned at reputedorganisations such as CSIRO, IT Power, Solar Energy Centre,TERI and Selco.
I am glad to present the current batch of M Tech students topotential employers and I welcome all of them. I am sure thatthey will find these students competent and sincere.

TERI University began its journey of providing relevantenvironmental education to post graduate and doctoral studentsin 1998. The genesis of TERI University is rooted in thecomprehensive research, consultancy, and outreach activities ofTERI (The Energy and Resources Institute), a not-for-profitindependent institute recognized globally for its contribution toscientific and policy initiatives in the realms of energy, environment, and sustainable development. The university wasgranted “Deemed to be University” status by the UGC in 1999.
The major strength of the University lies in the uniquerelationship it has with its parent body TERI. Which haspropelled and influenced the evolution of its academic units. Thisrelationship is enshrined in a memorandum of understandingbetween the University and TERI, wherein the two have agreedon collaborative research and programmes, joint studies andmutual support for seminars, symposia, and conferences. TERIalso provides corpus to financially support the University'sestablishment. Over the years TERI University has entered into amemorandum of understanding with many foreign universitiesthat facilitates exchange of students, faculty members andresources.
About TERI University
M Tech Placements 2012 | Department of Energy and Environment 3
With the world facing an energy crisis and the effects of climate change looming large, renewable energystudies and applications are set to play an extremely important role in any country. This has resulted in anincreased demand for specialists and engineers in renewable energy. To meet this demand, theDepartment of Energy and Environment at TERI University is offering an M Tech programme inRenewable Energy Engineering and Management. This programme is intended to fill the gap and providethe much needed human resource capacity in renewable energy technologies and management.
Suzlon Energy Limited, one of the world’s top three wind turbine makers entered into a Memorandum ofUnderstanding with TERI University for setting up this programme. The programme was conceptualizedand is being delivered by eminent professionals, educationists and industrialists. The pioneering batchcomprises of students from diverse engineering backgrounds, but with a common interest in renewableenergy.
About the M Tech Programme
M Tech Placements 2012 | Department of Energy and Environment 4
The structure of M Tech programme has been designed keeping in mind theimportance of the inter-linkages between energy use, environment and theeconomy.
Understanding these inter-linkages is a primary requirement for developingsustainable solutions. Students get a deep insight not only into renewable energytechnologies and implementation but also in the equally important areas of energyinfrastructure, energy economics, energy conservation and energy-environmentinterface.
In the real world, economics considerations form the basis for decision-makingand our students are trained by making them work on projects encompassing realscenarios.
