Sunday, April 26, 2020 Year A THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER TERCER DOMINGO DE PASCUA Here is the prayer that Pope Francis offered on March 11 asking Mary to protect the world during the coronavirus pandemic: O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. TERCER DOMINGO DE PASCUA

Here is the prayer that Pope Francis offered on March 11 asking Mary to protect the world during the coronavirus pandemic:

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope.

Parish Calendar Worship

CONTINUE TO STAY AT HOME, PLEASE! The Stay-at-Home order has been extended to May 4. Most of our parish staff continue to work remotely from their homes. Our offices continue to be closed to the public, but confessions are available at the times shown in the calendar. Our website is continually updated with the latest information. You can call the office and get your email added to our email blast list for email updates. There are outdoor containers at each campus—one near the Mainstreet doors, and one at the entrance near the Preston Lane parking area—where you can pick up a paper copy of the weekly bulletin.

Fr. Liekhus will continue to offer a private daily Mass, as well as Sunday Mass, for the good of the faithful and for the Mass intentions of the day. Each Mass will be recorded and posted every morning to our website: www.stgabrielhopkins.org/worship.

While you cannot receive the Eucharist in this manner, you are invited to make a Spiritual Communion, praying the Act of Spiritual Communion below:

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Others ways to keep your spiritual life healthy:

Visit Formed.org for Catholic media – from video to books to audio – for all ages. Page 4 of this bulletin explains how to sign in and/or set up a free account.

MASS INTENTIONS

Small Group Reflection Third Sunday of Easter

Acts: 2:14, 22-33; Psalm 16; I Peter 1:17-21; Luke 24:13-35

Peter’s main theme in addressing his fellow Jews is that Jesus is the promised Messiah, as demonstrated by the signs he worked and his Resurrection Messianic expectations of the Son of David included mastery over

nature. The messianic heir of Solomon was expected to perform signs of the kind preserved in the legends of Solomon. Peter proposes that Jesus had passed this test and his miracles were, in fact, his “credentials” from God. The Resurrection, the “kerygma”, that is the foundation of Christian faith, is presented by Peter as the fulfillment of Psalm 16, which promises that the faithful one won’t undergo the corruption of the grave. Peter used a well-established and accepted Jewish method of interpretation called “midrash” that creatively develops the original meaning of a text to make relevant and useful to a later generation. Psalm 16 affirms that “my body, too, abides in confidence; because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld, nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption. In our second reading this letter is believed to have been written thirty years or more after the first proclamation of the Gospel in Acts. The mercy we receive through his Precious Blood doesn’t exempt us from his justice; rather, it demands that we act reverently and with mercy. Reverence elicits obedience, humility and fidelity. It glows from the realization of what God as already done through the sacrificial blood of Christ. Even more than the blood of the Passover lamb that saved the enslaved Hebrews, the blood of Christ has ransomed believers from the futile way of life and patterns of behavior of the past. The two disciples on the road to Emmaus in today’s Gospel reading came to know the Lord in the “breaking of the bread” – the Eucharist. We can see that their encounter with Jesus that day parallels the way Jesus comes to meet us in every Mass. The first half of the Mass, like the first half of the journey to Emmaus, focuses on the Word of God, the Liturgy of the Word. The second half of the Mass, like the second half of the Emmaus story, centers on meeting and recognizing Jesus, in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Like the disciples who run back to Jerusalem to share the Good News, we too, at the end of every Mass, are commissioned to be ambassadors of Christ who revealed himself in the Word and in the Eucharist.

• Have you ever taken a trip or journey that turned out to be life-changing in some way?

• Have you ever had a life changing experience that became an encounter with Christ?

• Why do you think the disciples were unable to recognize Jesus before the Breaking of the Bread?

Marathon 2020 Thank you to those who sup-ported our Marathon event on April 24, or have made an Annual Fund donation to Notre Dame Academy this

year. Marathon 2020 was a virtual event, where students did a variety of activities in the days leading up to the Marathon day. On Friday, there was a drive-by parade at which faculty stood outside waiving to school families as they drove by.

Students were also still able to earn overall school prizes like spirit wear Fri-days and an ice cream party for next school year.

To donate online, please go to our website at https://nda-mn.org/events/marathon/. We are grateful for your prayers and financial support.

Distance Learning We miss all of our students dearly, but are proud of their commitment to learning at home.

Enroll for 2020-21 There is still time to enroll for the 2020-21 school year at Notre Dame Academy. Complete our online contact form. We will re-spond via email during regular school hours as we continue our distance learning. Have you won-dered how our remote learning works? Contact us today to find out at https://nda-mn.org/admissions/.

Charitable Giving Collection

May 16-17, our second collection will go toward the Venezuelan Mission of the Archdiocese of St. Paul & Minneap-olis. This mission, Jesucristo Resucitado, is located in Ciudad Guayana and was established in 1970 by the archdio-cese. An estimated 65,000 people live in the 11 distinct barrios or neighbor-hoods within the parish, and we minis-ter to the spiritual and physical needs of the people in this parish. You can find newsletter updates near the main entrances of each church.

St. Margaret’s Cemetery—Plant Stand Rental

It is time to think about plant stands for your loved ones whom you have laid to rest at St. Margaret’s Cemetery.

All plant stands at St. Margaret’s Cemetery must be rented from St. Gabriel the Archangel Church and will be placed at the cemetery by the Cemetery Committee. This ensures both quality of the stand and proper placement. The Cemetery Committee will put in all approved plant stands for 2020 per requests received. St. Margaret’s Cemetery Policies will be enforced. Stands, flowers and decorations not in compliance with policy rules and regulations will be removed.

Depending on weather and our volunteers’ time, plant stands will be put in by Memorial Day weekend. The rental fee, which includes placement and removal, is $25 per season. The plant stand will hold a 10” to 12” flower pot and the flower pot and flowers are your responsibility. Flowers not watered and taken care of will be disposed of. All flowers must be removed by October 1.

Contact the parish office to reserve your plant stand.

Thank you for assisting the St Margaret’s Cemetery volunteer committee. We are always looking for more volunteers so please contact us if you are interested in helping!

Loaves & Fishes continues serving meals in the St. Joseph campus social hall, Saturday-Tuesday evenings, 5:30-6:30pm, take-out only.

Catholic Home Mission Appeal—DELAYED TO OCT 18 Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions and parish limitations, the Home Mis-sions Appeal planned for the weekend of April 26 has been delayed. The new date will coincide with World Mission Sunday on the weekend of October 18, 2020. The Home Missions Appeal and World Mission Sunday both support strug-gling dioceses unable to provide basic pastoral services like Masses, sacraments, religious education and many important ministries to our brothers and sisters. This mission appeal in October would now be worldwide… including the U.S. For ques-tions, contact Mickey Friesen, 651.291.4445 or [email protected].

A Community Caring for Life

“We cannot help BUILD a culture of life if we don’t LIVE a culture of life. When children see us treating others well, taking time out of our lives to help others (or them!), and teaching them about the inherent dignity in all people, they will grow to live a culture of life as well. To be at the service of life means to serve all life. This means not only our children, but the elderly, the disabled, the forgotten, and the preborn. Our secular world will not teach this to our kids, so we must.” (Culture Of Life Studies)

When you’re shopping, look for items that give back! Box Tops for Education are on hundreds of your favorite products, and each box top is worth 10 cents for Notre Dame Academy (our parish-supported regional Catholic school). Families Moving Forward News for April 2020 Today, St Gabriel's completed its week with FMF. It certainly was different.

Because of Covid-19, FMF housed the families in a local ho-tel and asked the congregations to bring and serve the even-ing meal at the hotel. The families from all three loops stayed

together in the same hotel, so St Gabriel's was asked to serve the supper to all the families on just last Sunday and Monday. The other two congregations served the other five nights.

St Gabriel's was also asked to purchase the breakfast and lunch supplies for just two of the families and those supplies we delivered directly to the FMF Day Center. The Knights of Columbus served the meal on Sunday, April 19, and the Council of Catholic Women supplied the meal for Monday, April 20.

Now what can the rest of us do?

Using hotels is very expensive and not really something FMF has a budget for. FMF is asking those who can, to contribute to this expense by sending a check to Families Moving Forward at:

Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative 2610 University Ave West

St Paul, MN 55114

Also, they have a serious need for diapers/pull-ups and women hygiene sup-plies. Anyone who wishes to help with this can drop off their purchases at the St John's Campus. We will have a basket to receive them just inside the first door at the parking lot entrance. Drop off dates are this week, Monday, April 27, through Thursday, April 30, 9am-3pm.

St Gabriel's next hosting week is June 21-28. Prayerfully we will be able to host the families here.

Pray for the Homeless!

—Deacon Francis

Synod Timeline Update Thank you to all those who participated in the first year of the Synod process! Over 8000 people participated in the 19 general prayer and listening events and 11 focus ses-sions, providing over 35,000 comments.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Archbishop Hebda has decided to delay the Parish Consultation with Small Groups from Fall 2020 to Fall 2021 to focus on our parishes and schools without distraction. The exact dates will be forthcoming. The focus areas for the Synod will still be announced soon! Stay in the loop by reading The Catholic Spirit newspaper or online at thecatholicspir-it.com. Please continue to pray for the Synod and stay up to date with re-sources at www.archspm.org/synod.
