From the Desk of Msgr. Tosi--- Do you remember the Ed Sullivan Show on T.V.? If you do - like I do - we probably are showing our age to the younger members of the parish. I remember one act in particular of a man spinning plates on long poles placed on a table. The man ran around the table keeping the many plates spinning thus preventing them from falling and breaking. Yes - that was the entire act!! Not much by today’s standards of special effects and dare devil spectaculars. Yet I remember that act so clearly and often think that it is a good example of parish life today. I’m writing this on the day before the Carnival opens (hope you have visited this special event by the time you’re reading this); a few days after Graduation Mass and Barbeque for the Class of 2013 of Saint Luke School; two days after the class party for the Youth Group; a week after the Outdoor Mass and Crowning in Honor of Mary, Undoer of Knots - by now you get the point! I didn’t even mention First Holy Communions and Confirmation celebrated in May. And in the month of June many other parish events will take place among which is the closing luncheon of the Golden Age Club. Oh, I forgot to mention the end of the year Prayer Service and Party hosted by Sister Katherine Burke, CSJ for the Religious Education Program. So many plates - and that’s only the tip of the iceberg! How could we not mention the renovation and re-construction of the church building? Yes, it’s an exciting time in the life of the parish. However, there is one big difference from the Ed Sullivan Show act - these many activities are only possible because many people help to keep them going. The goodness and generous service of so many make possible the vitality of our parish life. Saint Luke Parish is alive and well because of those who love it so much and give of their time, talent and finances to make it a living Gospel for all. We call these people “good stewards” of God’s gifts. Of course the source and summit, the heart and center of our parish is the Eucharist - the living presence of the Risen Christ. Jesus is the reason we exist and why we do all we do. Hopefully, everything from Sports Association to Seniors and everything else will help us to know, love, serve and proclaim Christ to everyone here in Whitestone. God bless. Let us pray for one another, A WORD OF THANKS -- To the members of the Youth Group Serving Committee who volunteer their time and talent to the Youth Group of the Parish. First with Father Chirichella and now with Father Bruno, the Committee has begun and strengthen the parish ministry to our young people. A variety of activities have been planned from social events to opportunities for Christian Service. Together they have responded to one of the most often asked question - ”And what are we doing for the youth of the parish?” We are doing a lot and hope to offer more - with the help of parishioners. Father Bruno -- From June 6th to June 21st, Fr. Bruno will be returning to Rome in order to defend his dissertation and complete his Doctorate in Sacred Theology at the Pontifical Lateran University. Fr. Bruno has written on the political and social thought of St. Augustine of Hippo in a work entitled, Political Augustinianism: A Study of the Interpretations of Augustine’s Political Thought From 1900 to the Present. He will be defending this work in front of the dean and members of the theology faculty, in what is the last step before obtaining his degree. Father Bruno’s exam will take place on Friday, June 14th. Your prayers are kindly requested for Father Bruno that he may successfully defend his dissertation, complete his degree, and return safely back to Saint Luke’s. **************************************************************************** A MEMO FROM THE OFFICE OF THE VICAR GENERAL To: All Pastors & Administrators From: +F. Caggiano Re: Bishop Sullivan Date: Monday, June 3, 2013 As you may already know, Bishop Joseph Sullivan was involved in a serious auto accident this past Friday morning. He was taken to Nassau University Medical Center and is being treated in the trauma center. His current status is critical but stable. I am writing to ask for your continued prayers for Bishop Sullivan’s recovery. Please include a petition for his recovery in the Prayer of the Faithful at the celebration of mass. I will keep you informed of any change in Bishop Sullivan’s status as warranted.

FUN WITH LEGOS! Last week ended an eight week Engineering FUNdamentals with Lego Class at St. Luke School. This afterschool program, for students in grades 2-4, is designed to teach principles and methods of engineering, architecture, and science utilizing LEGO™ and other building systems. The students designed and built motorized machines, catapults, pyramids, buildings and other constructions out of LEGO® bricks. While exploring engineering, architecture, and physics, our students developed problem solving and critical thinking skills—and had a great deal of fun while doing so!

HAPPY 40TH ANNIVERSARY MONSIGNOR JOHN C. TOSI

The students and faculty of Saint Luke School held a surprise celebration in honor of our

Monsignor who celebrated his 40th Anniversary of priesthood on May 26, 2013!

Students from every grade regaled him with poetry, songs, banners, cheers, cards, cupcakes,

and a special movie all prepared in his honor.

Monsignor was truly surprised! It has been an honor to have John C. Tosi as the pastor of our parish! His loving, unbridled dedication and determination have made The Parish of Saint Luke a loving and safe environment in which we can all worship our savior, Jesus Christ.

Thank you Monsignor!

GOD BLESS YOU!

EUCHARIST

AND THE CROWNING OF MARY

On Friday, May31st the St. Luke School and parish community attended an outdoor mass honoring the Blessed Mother. It was concelebrated by Monsignor Tosi, Fr. Dettmer and Fr. Bruno.

This year the mass and crowning ceremony were dedicated to

Our Lady the Undoer of Knots, a devotion which is held dear by our new pontiff, Pope Francis. Floral bouquets were carried by student

representatives from each of the grade levels and four students crowned the statue of Mary.

Each of the classes was represented by a student member who read a petition to Our Lady and held a section of rope with a knot in it which symbolized the prob-lems and concerns of our school community. As each petition was presented, the students left their “knot” at the feet of the Blessed Mother’s statue. The mass was held on the lawn which was the former site of the convent of the Sisters of St. Dominic who founded St. Luke School

COME VISIT THE PLAYGROUND! One again, the school playground will be open for you to enjoy next Sunday, June 16th from

after the 7:30AM Mass to 2:00PM.

Visit the memorial to the Sisters of St. Dominic consisting of the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes formerly located in the convent garden. Memorial stones in memory or in honor of a

loved one are available on the school website at www.slswhitestone.org.

We thank those who have already donated a memorial stone.

The eighth grade has completed playing the Stock Market Game. The Stock Market Game is an interactive on-line game funded by the SIFMA Foundation. It is a game where the students

can buy or sell stocks, bonds and mutual funds. They are given $100,000 at the start of the game and the purpose is to grow that into much more. They compete against other schools in the process. They learned how to diversify their portfolios while trying not to lose all of their

money. They learned the Wall Street lingo and had fun while playing. They are a very competitive group, which added to the excitement. I am happy to announce that

Neeraj Sakhrani and Fiachra McDonagh finished first in St. Luke. They finished 3/1103 in New York State. Jimmy Ambery placed second in St. Luke and

33/1103 in New York State, and Robert Planz and Joey Taranto placed 3rd in St. Luke and 45/1103 in the state.
