Tensaw Land & Timber Company, Inc. was founded by Congressman Frank W. Boykin on November 1, 1937. Today the company is owned by his heirs and under the management of the Congressman’s Grandson, Riley Boykin Smith, as President and Chief Executive Officer; and Granddaughter, Starr L. Boykin, as Secretary/Treasurer. Other members of the management team include Lee E. Moncrief as Vice-President, Judy D. Lewis as Financial Manager, Albert W. Parnell as Woodsman, Kathy Moore as Administrative Assistant and R. Charlie Parker as Courier.
Tensaw has two offices. The main office is located at 3511 Montlimar Plaza Drive in Mobile. There is a Timber/Farm office located on Hwy 43 in McIntosh as well. The company also owns the Boykin Lodge, located in Double Gates, Alabama, which is a 100 year old three story farm house purchased by the Congressman in 1919.
Tensaw acquired approximately 100,000 acres of prime timberland located in Mobile, Baldwin and Washington counties of Alabama while under the direction of the Congressman. The majority of the property is under a long-term timber lease with Resource Management Services located in Birmingham, Alabama. The acreage not under lease is under the direction of Starr Boykin in the Mobile Office and Albert Parnell in the McIntosh Office. The timber managed by Tensaw is evaluated annually and bids are received from local logging companies to thin any stands determined to be available for timber cutting.
Throughout the years, certain land owned by Tensaw has become more suited for commercial development than timber growth. Such was the case in 2007, when Tensaw sold approximately 2,500 acres in North Mobile County to ThyssenKrupp ("TK") for their multi-billion dollar, state-of-the-art carbon steel processing facility to be built in Calvert, Alabama. Adjoining land fronting Highway 43 adjacent to the plant has also become very sought-after for commercial development. Tensaw is currently developing a 40-acre tract of land just south of the TK plant for retail and industrial use. Currently, there is an ABC Store and a warehouse facility in the park.
Tensaw and its management are very active in the community by supporting business, charitable and wildlife organizations. Tensaw is an investor in the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce’s Partners in Growth Initiative, a member of the Alabama Forestry Association, Alabama Wildlife Federation and National Wild Turkey Federation. Tensaw has established a scholarship at Auburn University that contributes toward the tuition of an Auburn Forestry major from the McIntosh area each year. The company has also supported many area charities.
