Advantages and Value to theState of Tennessee
• Modal Comparisons– One barge = 70 trucks = 16 rail cars.– 63 million tons shipped from/thru/to
the State of Tennessee in 2008 = 2,520,000 trucks.
– Emissions are 20% to 66% lower for barges.
– A barge can move one ton of cargo 576 miles on one gallon of fuel. A truck can move the same ton only 155 miles on one gallon.
• Navigation– 1,062 miles of navigable waterways
linking to 21 States with global access through New Orleans and Mobile.
– Approximately 63 million tons shipped via TN River (excluding AL portion) and Cumberland Rivers annually.
• Hydropower– Six Cumberland Dams producing
power valued at $97 M/ year.– Numerous TVA Dams on TN River.
• Flood Control/ Supply – Damage Savings of $41 M /year.– Cumberland – 66 intakes – 1.3 T g/y.

Advantages and Future Opportunities
• Reduces roadway and bridge maintenance/repair costs.
• Lowers freight rates for State’s shippers, farmers, and manufacturer’s.
• Relieves congestion on our highways.• Improves public safety.• Ensures continued funding for multiple-use
of the waterways (recreation, hydro, etc.)
Advantages and Future Opportunities
• Our waterways are vital to national initiatives relative to freight capacity, fuel-efficiency, environment, and safety.
• With increasing transportation needs and changing transportation patterns, the waterways will continue to grow in their importance.
• Our Waterways and Ports should play pivotal roles with respect to economic development.
Thank you for your time and the Opportunity.
