W e as a people are blessed with the incredible

language of Hebrew. Both the biblical and modern language is brilliantly built upon roots, shorashim, whereupon three or four letters become the foundation of many different contexts or words. For example, the root for image is tzadi-lamed-mem

(pronounced tzelem). With these three letters we form quite a few words related to image like a camera, which in Hebrew is matz-lema. When teaching Hebrew, it is important for the student to learn as many roots as possible, enabling them to begin identifying many additional Hebrew words, even if they seem unfamiliar.

A great Hebrew word is me-yu-chad, meaning special. If you look at the root of this word you see that it is yud-chet-dalet (pronounced yachad). Yachad in Hebrew means together because for something to be special everything and more importantly, everyone, must be together. As I look back on the past few months here at Temple Beth Shalom, there have been some of the most special moments that I can recall and it is all because we were together.

This stretch of special moments began with our Purim celebration and evening which was even written up in one of our local newspapers. Over 160 TBS congregants joined together for a great night of laughter, fun and games. While somehow our groggers were mysteriously missing (we have found them since), there was enough noise and ruach (spirit) in the room that they really weren’t needed.

The following week our community so graciously and warmly welcomed our daughter, Noa, into their midst. Being both Rabbi and parent that morning was a difficult balancing act but there seemed to be a magic in the room (I know that I am a bit biased) that once again reassured Selilah and I that we are raising our daughter in the right community.

The month of March ended with an incredible service as Jordan Feldman became a Bar Mitzvah. Each and every B’nai Mitzvah is special but the Feldmans brought

together two wonderful local communities – their former synagogue community in Peekskill and their new community at TBS. Over 200 people packed the sanctuary as Jordan led us in prayer with many generations of the Feldmans participating in the service. I have heard on more than one occasion that their guests were truly impressed with our synagogue.

The month of April began with an incredible Passover celebration. For every service except one we had a minyan and we were blessed with 100 people at our second night seder, the largest turnout ever for that event. In attendance that evening were eight clergy members from our local religious institutions. As always, they so incredibly embraced our traditions, even taking on the difficult role of leading the final song, Echad Mi’yodeah!

For an event to be me-yu-chad (special) it does not necessarily need to be happy. Our community also came together for a few very sad, emotional moments as we lost

three of our beloved, long-time congregants. First, we lost Ron Pollack, the beloved husband of Marge, after a battle with cancer spanning many years. Then we lost Hilda Gershman, our synagogue’s “matriarch” unexpectedly which really threw all of us into shock and despair. Finally, also after battling an illness, congregant Michael Goldstein was recently taken from us. While our hearts are broken and continue to need mending, Rabbi Brodie, the many members of our community, and I have all tried to celebrate these amazing individuals’ lives

and contributions to our world. For all of these trying moments we cried together, we smiled together and we reflected together. That is why they were me-yu-chad.

I have no idea what the future holds for all of us. I wish I did. Believe it or not, I don’t even have answers as to why we have to celebrate such happy and sad occasions all at once. What I do know is that we have an incredible community here at Temple Beth Shalom. It is not perfect by any means but it is evident that when we come together to share our life experiences with each other the moment is truly going to be me-yu-chad, special – and because of that, we can’t ask for anything more.

~ Rabbi Joshua Kalev

President’s Message

“M arch Madness”…. These two words have

become part of this generation’s every day lexicon thanks to the promoters of the NCAA yearly basketball tournament, “Road to the Final Four”. Although normally used to describe the craziness of 64 college teams trying to win the National

championship, I look at these words as a perfect description of this last March right here at Temple Beth Shalom. I would be hard-pressed to find another 31 day period in our history in which more things happened within our community creating a roller-coaster ride of emotions on a daily basis. Through it all, one thing stuck out in my mind…that our temple family celebrated and mourned together, and in the end, became a much stronger community because of it.

The month began on a super high note, with the wonderful Megillah reading & Purim Carnival on the first weekend, followed the next weekend by the joyous baby naming ceremony of our newest pride and joy, Noa Maya. We all learned and laughed at the Purim extravaganza, as adults and children alike enjoyed a truly memorable evening, and we couldn’t stop kvelling the next week over the newest addition to our temple family. I don’t know where Rabbi Kalev found the energy (he claims he hadn’t slept), but I just want to give a huge yasher koach to him for organizing both events. A big Mazel Tov goes to the Rabbis Kalev on their beautiful daughter, with an enormous thank you to the Kalev family for allowing us to share in this wonderful experience. It was a joy for both the TBS and outside communities to join together for this very special occasion.

After the emotional high of the baby naming, we were all brought back to earth the next week when we learned of the passing of two of our beloved congregants, Ron Pollack and Hilda Gershman, within days of each other. Both of these long-time members of our temple family, will be sorely missed. Again our community came together as never before, this time to support each other in mourning the loss of our loved ones. The emotional memorial service for Hilda led by Rabbis Kalev and Brodie at the synagogue inspired us

all and made us realize how important community is in helping us survive the toughest moments in our lives.

Life started to normalize following that. It was after the emotional dust settled that I realized again how fortunate we all are to have such a special community here in Mahopac with such a tremendous synagogue at the center of it all. TBS has truly become a place to congregate, to learn, to pray, and to share with each other, in good times and bad.

Before I finish, I would like to encourage everyone to participate in another major community event in June, the annual visit if the Israeli Scouts. Over the last five years, Temple Beth Shalom has hosted an Israeli Scout caravan for a few days each June. It has been an awesome experience for everyone who has had the opportunity to meet these kids personally and to watch them perform at our synagogue. This year, for the first time, we are hosting them over a weekend, June 8-10, instead of during the midweek period. Our terrific Israeli Scout committee has seized this opportunity to organize an entire weekend of events for the whole community, with the TBS Shabbaton 5767 on Saturday, June 9, and the Scout concert at the synagogue on Sunday, June 10 at 6 pm. The Shabbaton, beginning at 4pm on Saturday, will feature guest speakers, breakout sessions for adults and kids with many of our own congregants leading the sessions, and a chance to meet the scouts up close and personal. Look for the entire schedule and all the necessary information is featured in this edition of Temple Times,

With thanks to the Scout committee for developing and organizing this ambitious project, I urge everyone to take part in some or all of the events during the weekend. This once again proves how awesome our congregation is and how valuable our little synagogue is as the center of Jewish life here in Mahopac.

See you at the synagogue!

Ron

Appropriate Synagogue Dress

As a community, we try to walk the fine line between being comfortable in our synagogue “home” while also remembering that it is a place of kedushah (holiness). For quite a few months, the ritual committee has had long discussions regarding synagogue dress – what is appropriate and what is not. We know that especially when it comes to our students that it can be a battle just to get them to attend services, let alone have them wear something special.

In order to continue to keep the sanctity and sacredness of our synagogue service, we have instructed our gabaim (ushers) to only ask those individuals who are appropriately dressed to come up to the bimah for an honor. We want to respect and acknowledge anyone who wants to help take part in leading services, but will be unable to do so if the following is worn: Men – jeans, shorts, sweats, t-shirts, tank tops; Women – mini-skirts (above knee line), jeans, shorts, sweats, t-shirts, tank tops, spaghetti straps.

Growing up, many of us actually had clothes just for Shabbat and holidays. While we know that today that is usually not the case, it is our goal to come dressed differently than we

would each and everyday during the week. We want everyone to feel comfortable within our synagogue walls because we truly believe that is what makes TBS so special. But, we must also remember that out of respect for each other and for God, we need to help to “guard and keep God’s Shabbat/Holidays holy, so that it continues to be an everlasting covenant throughout the generations.” (Exodus 31:16)

A Note From the Ritual Committee

S havu'ot, the Festival of Weeks, is the second of the three major festivals with both historical and agricultural

significance (the other two are Passover and Sukkot). Agriculturally, it commemorates the time when the first fruits were harvested and brought to the Temple, and is known as Hag

ha-Bikkurim (the Festival of the First Fruits). Historically, it celebrates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, and is also known as Hag Matan Torateinu (the Festival of the Giving of Our Torah). The period from Passover to Shavu'ot is a time of great anticipation. We count each of the days from the second day of Passover to the day before Shavu'ot, 49 days or 7 full weeks, hence the name of the festival. The counting reminds us of the important connection between Passover and Shavu'ot: Passover freed us physically from bondage, but the giving of the Torah on Shavu'ot redeemed us spiritually from our bondage to idolatry and immorality. (Join Rabbi Kalev for a Shavuot dessert and study session on Tuesday, May 22)

Temple Beth Shalom ISRAELI SCOUT VISIT 2007

A Message from the Israeli Scouts Committee

Three separate troops of ten Israeli high school juniors, who are approaching their final year of study before entering the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), travel across the United States from June to mid-August in small mini-vans, bringing a mes-sage of friendship throughout the country. Since 2002, Temple Beth Shalom has hosted ten of these remarkable ambassadors from Israel to educate and perform for not only our synagogue members, but for the community as well.

As a result of fundraising functions planned by our Scouts committee and the generous support of Temple Beth Shalom’s various other committees and re-sources, the entire TBS community is invited to spend Shabbat, from June 8-9, with the Scouts. Various functions are being planned, including a Friday night dinner and mini-Shabbaton. The committee is ambitiously investigating avenues that would keep the cost for the weekend meals to an unbelievably low price.

Thanks to the Mahopac High School PTO, these ten students will also spend one entire day at Mahopac High School, answering questions on various topics, from how they feel about the Hizbollah War to shopping for clothes. We can think of no better way to build a bridge of tolerance than through personal acquaintances. They will also spend time with Maimonides Academy in CT, and with our own Hebrew School students on Sunday, June 10.

The greatest event of the weekend will occur at 6pm on Sunday, June 10, when these ten talented Israeli teens will sing and dance their way into the hearts of the community. From a video glimpse into their own lives to an assortment of Hebrew and English musical segments graced with colorful costume and extraor-dinary choreography, the TBS stage will fill with energetic excitement and in-credibly professional entertainment.

If you would like to attend any of these events, call the Temple office at (845) 628-6133 for reservations. For security purposes, reservations are required. There is also a suggested $5 donation for the concert.

We wish you all a meaningful Shavuot.

A Message from your Sisterhood President

H ello again. Glad to see that the weather is getting warmer. Talking about the

warm weather, please hold on a little longer. We are working with a local nursery this year to supply our plants for our annual plant sale. Due to the cold weather we were advised to hold off a bit so that the plants that we sell will not be damaged by cold. Sisterhood is very excited to sponsor Shabbat Across America again and this year it is on May 4th. Invitations

have already been sent out; please RSVP as soon as you can so that we can accommodate everyone who wants to come. If any Sisterhood member would like to take part in leading any part of Friday night service, please let me know. Almost all the slots are filled!! It is great to see that so many women from our community that want to be on the bimah! Please set aside May 20th for our Annual Torah Fund Lunch. TBSMaMAla’s BLINTZ SOUFFLE

Ingredients 1/4 lb. butter or margarine, melted 12 frozen blintzes 4 eggs 1 1/2 c. sour cream 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 c. sugar 1 1/2 tsp vanilla 1 tsp cinnamon Drop orange juice

Instructions Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt butter in casserole pan and place frozen blintzes on top. Beat remaining ingredients in blender and pour over top. Refrigerate overnight. Bake uncovered for 30-45 minutes.

FragehFrageh for MaMAla for MaMAla

Q: Why do we eat dairy on Shavuot?

A: There are several different, valid an-swers to this question but I don’t have the space to include them all here. The one that speaks the most to me is, ac-cording to the Rabbis, based on the fact that the Torah was given to the Israelites at Mt Sinai on Shabbat, 6th of Sivan (which coincidentally is the date of Sha-vuot). Because the receiving of the Torah occurred on Shabbat, no animal slaugh-tering or cooking could take place. Thus in order to recreate that day, dairy foods became the tradition. To paraphrase Tevya in Fiddler on the Roof: “Why do we eat blintzes on Shavuot? I’ll tell you why... Tradition!”

CHEESECAKE a la TBS

Crust 1 3/4 c. graham cracker crumbs 1/4 c. chopped walnuts or pecans 1/2 tsp. Cinnamon 1/2 c. melted butter

Filling 3 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla extract 3 c. sour cream 1 c. sugar 16 oz. cream cheese (room temp)

Instructions: Mix all crust ingredients. If not preparing sour cream topping, reserve 3 tablespoons for topping and press re-mainder into bottom and side of 9” spring form pan. Place in refrigerator until ready to use.

Combine eggs, cream cheese, sugar and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Blend in sour cream. Pour into crust. Top with crumbs.

Bake 375 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour (see Tips below). Chill 4-5 hours before serving.

Sour Cream Topping 1 1/2 c. sour cream 3 tblsp sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract

Mix sour cream, sugar and vanilla together and carefully spread in an even layer on warm cake, without letting it drop over crust.

Bake at 325 degrees for 10 minutes. Re-move from oven and cool to room tem-perature. Refrigerate at least 2 hours be-fore serving.

General Tips Cheesecakes act more like baked custards than cakes. Thus they tend to crack. If you are not making a sour cream or other top-ping, add a pan of water to oven while baking to help prevent cracking. Or add a Tblsp to 1/4 cup cornstarch to the batter before baking.

To avoid overcooking, test for doneness by gently shaking pan. The top should move as one solid piece, but its center should still be wobbly (not soupy) in a 3-inch circle.

GRANDMA MOLLY’S BLINTZES

Batter 2 eggs 1 tblsp unsalted butter, very soft (plus extra butter for pan) 1 c. unbleached flour 1/2 tsp salt 1 c. milk 1/4 tsp baking powder

Cheese Filling 8 oz. farmer cheese 2 oz. cream cheese (room temp) 1 egg, lightly beaten 1/2 Tblsp grated lemon peel 4 Tblsp honey, maple syrup or 2 tsp sugar Pinch salt

Potato Filling 4 potatoes, peeled and cooked 2 onions, chopped and sautéed in butter 1 egg, lightly beaten Salt and pepper to taste Paprika Instructions Lightly beat eggs. Add soft butter, flour, salt and milk and stir until smooth. Add baking powder.

Melt extra butter in small non-stick pan (5-6”). When butter is hot but not brown, gradually pour batter (1/3 c) while rotating pan to make a thin layer on bottom surface.

Cook 30 seconds or until small air bubbles form and top is set. Remove to plate and continue with remaining batter, adding butter as needed, until all crepes are made.

Prepare filling by combining cheeses, egg, lemon, honey and salt. Beat by hand until smooth.

Place 1 tablespoon filling in center of crepe and roll sides , folding in ends, until com-pletely enclosed.

Heat butter in large skillet and fry each blintz four minutes, starting with the seam side down and turning to brown all sides.

General Tip: Blintzes can be made in ad-vance and frozen. When ready to use, defrost in 325 degree oven for 20 minutes.

Happy Shavuot from our kitchen to yours!

Colonial Terrace’s ballroom with food , fun , in for m at i on an d amazement. Conceived five years ago as a fundraiser for Temple Beth Shalom, the showcase has become an annual event that Jewish communities in Northern Westchester, Putnam, lower Dutchess, and Fairfield counties have supported. But no one supports this event more than our own members. The real credit goes to our wonderful volunteers who have donated their time and energy year after year to ensure that everything runs smoothly, from registration to

cleanup. Special kudos to Eric Perlman for his expert supervision the entire day.

A wide range of delicacies was once again provided by Bloom’s, Charlotte Berwind, Gersky’s and Mahopac Golf Club. And whose palate can forget the delectable cake samples from Perfect Endings? DJs kept the room hopping as usual with dance routines and giveaway contests, while vendors displayed services from photography to tuxedos. Raffle prizes were also donated by the vendors, and some very lucky registrants won a wide range of prizes, such as an overnight stay at Holiday Inn, gift baskets, jewelry, a handmade tallit, and more.

The newest addition to this event, and probably the most exciting, was TBS’s first Fashion Show. Our own TBS models paraded down the center of the ballroom in gowns that flowed and sparkled. A special thanks to

Wendy Greenberg and Melody Weisman for arr anging th is extraordinarily glamorous fashion show, and to the elegant models who walked the carpet with grace and beauty:

Juliana Greenberg, Rachel Kwan, Jennifer Michaels, Haley Weisman; Janine Belsky, Lori Liebman, Barbara Weisman; Michele Greenberg, Susan Katz, Marcia Lichtman, Gail Plaut, Ann Rubin, Monica Scavone.

W h a t d o e s

one do on an early April morning in the midst of a N or ’ e a s t er ? Well, for 15 of us, we headed over to the P u t n a m County Fish

and Game Club off of Drewville Road in Carmel, New York.

It was all due to the planning and coordination of Ben Scavone and Howie Gershman that the USYers, through their affiliation with Venturing, were able to partake in such an exciting and informative event.

The morning consisted of a mandatory safety instruction presentation led by certified i n s t r u c t o r s t og e t h er wi t h informative videos.

Later in the windy and rainy morning, we trudged down the hill from the warmth of the main cabin to the open air shooting range. Though there was a roof above us, the area opened up to 100 yards of firing range. It was cold and rainy but we kept smiles on our faces and excitement in our eyes.

T h e t a r g e t w a s p o s t e d approximately 15 yards away. It consisted of a sheet of paper with 6 bulls-eye type targets on the sheet. On completing the full target, the student had the opportunity to aim at metal shapes hung from a post some 65-70 yards out on the range.

Travis Scavone, Sara Liebman, Tess Bettman, Matthew Michaels, Michael Sanders-Demott, Lori Liebman and Raymond Perlman were excellent sharp shooters. A huge Yasher Koach to each of them.

The surprise of the morning, although to some readers it may have been all too evident, was that the markswoman of the event turned out to be P a t t i B e t t m a n . According to the instructors in attendance, Patti’s novice status belied her keen a i m a n d c o m p r e h e n s i v e understanding of the mechanics of handling a 22 caliber rifle. I for one have begun sleeping with one eye open.

In attendance at the event, giving support to both the USYers and their fellow adults, were Dennis Demott, Lynn and Rob Liebman and Eric Perlman. As always, it was wonderful to see the participation of both kids and adults in a Temple event. Thank You all.

In the event you were unable to come to the Purim Carnival in March, you shall probably never see what those of us in attendance that day were so very fortunate to witness.

At the conclusion of the Megillah Reading in the sanctuary, Tess Bettman and Josh Solar-Doherty, Vice President and President respectively of USY, “kidnapped” the Rabbi and placed him in a cell in the carnival room. The Rabbi was already dressed quite beautifully for Purim with long red hair, a gypsy style dress and an attractive figure. The kidnapping was staged to raise money. The congregation was asked to donate a certain amount of

money in order to see the Rabbi perform specific acts such as paint his finger and toe nails; eat baby food and suck on a pacifier. The Rabbi would not be released from his captivity until a sufficient ransom was collected. Thanks to Rabbi Joshua Kalev’s tremendous

h e a r t a n d s p e c t a c u l a r sense of humor the evening was a great success! Actually, it was a s u c c e s s because all of y o u i n attendance were so generous in

your support of our fundraising program.

Notwithstanding the fun with the Rabbi, the rest of the Carnival was great fun with another Fear Factor booth, painting of bird houses, water guns and candles and balloon dart game. The addition of an adult coffee lounge was a tremendous success and a huge Yasher Koach to Georgene Perlman for the conception and realization of the lounge. There were numerous people helping during the Carnival, working the food concession, cleaning up and running the booths. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

Hebrew School News

z y x v u

B elieve it or not, it’s time to

register for the 2007-08 Hebrew School year. Registration forms are on their way to you

with an early bird return date of June 15th that affords you a discount and us the opportunity to begin planning for the upcoming year. If you know of any families that are considering sending their children to Hebrew School next year, this is the perfect time for them to come and check us out. They will have an opportunity to see classes in action, witness our weekly tefilah assembly, join us for Tot Shabbat or participate in our Family Service before we take a break from all these activities for the summer.

We are eagerly anticipating our annual visit with the Israel Scouts that coincides with our closing ceremony and awards program. This year, not only will we be afforded their company during school time, but the committee is planning a Shabbaton that is sure to be an exciting experience for adults and students alike.

This is also a good opportunity for me to recap some of the year’s highlights. Our experience with the giant Attractive Lands Map of Israel was a really exciting interactive way for the boys and girls to explore our Jewish

homeland. The Dalet/Hey trip to the Museum of Jewish Heritage and the Bet/Gimmel participation in the WAHS zimryiah served as both learning experiences and memory makers. Kitah Aleph and the Gesher/ Mechina classes made memories of their own with their participation in Family Services. Our terrific Purim program in cooperation with USY proved to be one of the most successful events of the year. Almost 100% of our kids, dressed in costume, showed up for the megillah reading and carnival!! Our Walk through Seder allowed multi-age groups of students to work together teaching each other about the Passover holiday. Thanks to Lois Vatkin, Jill Sanders-DeMott, Chris Feuer, and Melody Weisman for lending a hand that day.

Last but not least, a big yasher koach goes to Lisa Branca and Robin Kushner for leading the way for us to raise over $900 for the school through our (get ready to eat chametz) cookie drive. Thanks to all the families who supported this drive!!

Send in your Hebrew School registration early and sign up to be a class parent for next year! We need your help.

Please mark your calendars and put a big post-it note on your car/truck/suv dashboard. The morning of Mother’s Day, May 13 there will be a CAR WASH at the Temple sponsored by USY and the Israeli Scout Committee. The money raised will help support USY while a portion of the proceeds will help pay for the Israeli Scouts who will be visiting in June.

Keep an eye out for further events posted either online at the Temple Beth Shalom website or on the front table near the office at the Temple.

I know it’s old and childish, but April showers do bring May flowers! May the coming weeks blossom for you all.

TZEDAKAH If I am only for myself, what am I?

Every year JWI’s Mother’s Day Flower Project delivers flowers to more than 150 battered women's shelters across the United States and Israel on Mother’s Day.

You can be part of this gesture of support and encouragement – both to the special women in your life (mothers, daughters, sisters, granddaughters, and friends) who receive beautiful Mother’s Day cards when you make donations to the project in their honor, and to the thousands of mothers whose holiday is brightened as they spend this special day in a shelter, away from home.

Proceeds from the Mother’s Day Flower Project help at-risk women and children on Mother’s Day and all year, funding a variety of JWI programs that offer comfort and opportunities to start building a brighter, independent future.

For women. . . Your contribution helps us provide training and support that give women the skills to become healthy and independent, including: stress management, nutrition, job training, interviewing skills, and financial planning.

For children. . . Your contribution funds JWI’s commitment to put 100 children’s libraries in shelters across the U.S. These libraries are stocked with hundreds of new books and brand new furniture; they give children a safe place to read, a quiet place to study, and a chance to learn and grow.

For the community . . . Your contribution helps JWI convene the next international conference on domestic abuse in the Jewish community; involve hundreds of community leaders and practitioners in our National Alliance to End Domestic Abuse; train women and girls to protect themselves; and advocate for domestic violence prevention and treatment.

Join hundreds of women and men making donations this year to JWI’s Mother’s Day Flower Project; honor your mother, sister, friends, and other special women in your life, while you join the movement to end domestic violence on Mother’s Day and every day.

For each contribution of $25 or more, JWI will send a beautiful Mother's Day card to one of the special women in your life, to let her know that a donation has been made in her name.

M ONDAY, April 16 in Israel, they observed Holocaust

M em or i a l D a y. M onda y, i n Blacksburg, Virginia, a survivor who once taught in Israel died, and he died a hero. Like all dead heroes, he left us a challenge.

His name was Liviu Librescu. He was a young Romanian, his son told The Associated Press, when his country aligned with Nazi Germany, and he was sent first to a labor camp and then to a ghetto. After the free Western powers and the Soviet Union vanquished the Nazi regime, Librescu faced another evil government: that of t he communis ts . He s tud i ed engineering and earned a Ph.D. A man as smart as he must have known that refusing one’s allegiance to a communist government is hazardous to one’s career at least. Nevertheless he refused it, his son told the AP, and when he later asked the communists to let him move to Israel, he lost his job.

It was not until 1978, after Menachem Begin, then prime minister of Israel, intervened, that Librescu made it to that country, Librescu’s son told The AP. According to his curriculum vitae, still posted on a Virginia Tech Web site, Librescu taught at Tel Aviv University until 1985, when he began teaching at Virginia Tech. The CV runs to 61 pages of attainments, including this title, to which it gives pride of place: “U.S. citizen.”

Two tyrannies tried to enslave him, but he died a free man. Liviu Librescu is worthy of honor, not because he died — anyone can die, and everyone eventually does — nor merely because of what he lived through, but because of what he did; and not only because of what he did as a researcher — although his CV claims he has been cited 1,000 times — but because of what he did as a man in the face of danger. He survived the Nazis. He said no to the communists. And reportedly, on Monday, at the cost of his life, he blocked the path of a killer. Source: www.rushprnews.com

Hilda Gershman Memorial Garden Fund

A fund has been established to preserve the memory of longtime TBS member and dear friend, Hilda Gershman. Hilda was the heart of Temple Beth Shalom for more than forty years and our community was blessed to have known

her to be such a vital part of our lives.

The Memorial Garden will be created along the front of the temple facing Croton Falls Road. It will start at

the front door and wrap around the building beneath the large menorah.

Donations made to the

Hilda Gershman Memorial Garden Fund will help us all to honor her and to

commemorate her caring and dedicated spirit.

O ne of my favorite activities, each time I visit Israel, is to

travel around the country, to see new sites and most of all, to visit old friends. There are many and they are all over the country. This year, I had a new destination. Two of my old friends, one from the north, the other from the south, moved to new houses near Rehovot.

Rehovot? The last time I visited this city was in sixth or seventh grade when I was on a school tour. We went to there to pay a visit to the Weizmann house and tombstone. I remember a huge house, centered in a beautiful big garden. I was impressed. Yes, they did talk to us about the man, the president who had just passed away, but I did not know much about Weizmann. I never meet him personally, and unlike his successor, Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, I did not have any emotional ties with him, nor have any intellectual interest in the man. I do remember, on the ride home, seeing a couple of young guys leaning on their bikes talking to one another. And I envied those guys – living in a town with such a beautiful garden. Indeed, I needed to do some growing up in order to appreciate the man, his vision and his sacrifices to the Jewish Zionist cause. Like many others in his generation, Weizmann knew how to give, to support, and promote the life of his people.

Born in 1874, in Russia, Chaim Weizmann was 1 of 15 children. His upbringing was traditional at the time - Heder, and high school in Pinsk.

He excelled in his chemistry studies in the Polytechnic Institute in Germany, and moved on to Switzerland where he received his doctorate, with honors, at age 25. All along, he believed that Judaism was not just a religion, but the essence of

a nation, culture and shared history. Not surprisingly, one of his mentors wa s Dr . Th eodor e Herz el . It was while he was teaching in Geneva that he star ted his involvemen t in the Zion ist movement, participating in the Congress and voicing his objections to the Uganda Scheme. After teaching at the University of Manchester in England, he became the director of the British Admiralty laboratories. There he developed a new method for manufacturing acetone from corn, a tremendous help to the British war effort. That was the first of his greatest moments, and he sold the rights of his patent to a British corporation (for royalties). His contribution brought him into direct contact with heads of the British government, enabling him to promote the Jewish cause on the diplomatic front. Weizmann efforts cu l mina t ed in th e Bal four Declaration on Nov 2, 1917. This declaration was the first step in the formation and establishment of the state of Israel.

Weizmann understood that the Jews and the Arabs, eventually, had to live together, sharing the same land. In 1919 he met with Emir Fisal, the leader of the Arab world then. Together they signed a joint agreement to develop the land of Israel. While in Israel, he laid the foundation of the Hebrew University with other dignitaries in the Zionist world, among them Dr. Albert Einstein. The university opened its doors on Mount Scopus in April 1925.

Understanding the important roll of science in the advance of the Jewish land to be, he helped to establish of the Dead Sea Cooperation and Rotenberg power station by the Kineret. Weizmann also helped to initiate the UJA, an agency that, to this day, provides financial support for the state of Israel.

Yet, not all was smooth on the British front. In 1922, he reluctantly accepted the Churchill White Paper. In this interpretation of the Balfour Declaration, the British continued to support the Jewish cause but backed away from their promised to create a Jewish state. In fact, 76% of the land, west to the Jordan River, was given to Emir Abdullah to rule, removed from the land promised as part of the Jewish mandate.

In 1930, after the riots of 1928-1929, when Arab extremists killed hundreds of Jewish people in Hebron and Jaffa, the British published another, new policy statement, known as the Passfield White Paper. In this paper they declare a shortage in Arabic land, a position that was not support by any report or study from Palestine, and as a result, they restricted the number of new Jewish developments, and limited the numbers of Jewish immigrants to allow for ‘the capacity of the land to support them’.

Weizmann took this new shift in British policy toward the Jewish community very personally, and he resigned his position as the president of WZO. Jewish organizations worldwide and British opponents mounted a major campaign against the White Paper resulting in a letter from British Prime Minister Ramsey MacDonald (February 13, 1931) to Dr. Chaim Weizmann.

The letter from Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald was not equal to the Paper in the level of legality, but the MacDonald Letter was issued as an official interpretation of the White Paper. The letter reiterated the Mandate's obligation to "facilitate Jewish immigration and to encourage closed settlement by Jews on the land," and suggested that State lands be made available to both Jews and Arabs. The letter reaffirmed the government's right to control immigration, as well as the link

between immigration and economic absorptive capacity. That somewhat eased the offending provisions. In years to come, Weizmann devoted his energy to his scientific work while continuing his endless work on behalf of Jewish community world wide. And, from 1935 – 1946, he returned to the presidency of WZO.

During World War 2, Weizmann pressed the British government to organize a Jewish fighting force, which became known as the Jewish Brigade. The story of the Jewish Brigade during WW2, is well known, as well their role in helping many of the holocaust survivors reach safety in a land away from the ashes of Europe. Weizmann also had two sons who served in the British Army. On the eve of his flight to USA to meet with President Roosevelt, he received the news that the plane carrying his youngest son Michael, a pilot in Her Majesty’s Air Force, was shot down. Grieving for his private loss, he continued on his mission.

During the war he was an honorary adviser to the British Ministry of Supply. His contributions to the war effort also included his research on synthetic rubber and high–octane gasoline. Those new innovations were shared with the US government, opening the doors for Weizmann to form a personal relationship with President Harry Truman. This relationship helped in obtaining the suppor t of the US for the establishment of the state of Israel.

In 1930, he laid the foundation of the Daniel Sieff Science Research Institute in Rehovot, right on the edge of the Negev, which he fought very hard to keep within the boundaries of

Israel while the UN was debating the division of the land between the Arabs and the Israelis. In 1935, he made Rehovot his home, right by the Seiff Institute. In 1949, on his 75 birthday, with the blessing of the Seiff family, the name of the institution was changed into The Weizmann Institute of Science.

On May 17, 1948, Chaim Weizmann was elected President of the Provisional Council, and on February 16, 1949, he was inaugurated as the first President of the State of Israel. Dr. Weizmann, Israel’s first president, died on November 9, 1952, at the age of 78. At his own request, he was buried in the garden in front of his house in Rehovot.

Very few visionaries and world leaders live to see their dream, the object of their life’s work, come to fruition. Weizmann was fortunate to see the birth and success of young Israel. Furthermore, the modest Weizmann Institute became one of the world’s leading research science communities, incorporating medicine, agriculture and life science.

No doubt about it, Rehovot of today is far from the small town I visited as a child. Yes, I did enjoy the visit with my friends. Leaving the city the following day, I could not stop wondering what happened to those two young guys that I envied – leaning on their bikes near the garden in Rehovot. And I envy those who chose to live in a shadow of a giant – Dr. Chaim Weizmann.
