welcoming her on behalf of all humanity. In that moment, he realized there was so much more to his life and his work – that it was about what he could give to his world and humanity beyond the simple performance of rote skill.

Ultimately, what enriches the spiritual nature of life and the soul is cultivating a sense of gratitude. If we can cultivate a sense of quiet and humility, where we can pause in our relentless pursuit of personal conquest, achievement, and gain, then we may find that gratitude will inspire us to better understand our lives, our path and our place.

Gratitude often comes when we appreciate the experience of others, who may want from the basics of life. Gratitude for health can come from a moment when another is fighting disease. Gratitude for plenty can come when we witness impoverishment. And yet gratitude can also come from cultivating awe, an appreciation and awareness

of the awesome nature of life. Gratitude for life can come from marveling at the awesome mystery of creation. Gratitude for love can come from an overwhelming sense of awe and appreciation for the life and gifts of another.

Gratitude not simply elevates the soul, but inspires us to act for the good and the right. Our gratitude for a safe and

comfortable home may inspire us to help the homeless. Our gratitude for recovery from illness may inspire us to work toward supporting research that will benefit others. Our gratitude for material success may inspire us to give back and help those in need.

What enriches my life and my work at Temple Beth El is my constant amazement at what people are willing to give to support and enhance the mission of our congregation. I invite you to enjoy this issue of The Chronicle where we share our gratitude for so many who offer their gifts of time, talent, and material resources to make a difference in the lives of others.

I think the beginning of my spiritual life began with a lesson my mother taught me as a kid – perhaps more of a scolding than a lesson – when she looked at me and said, “You know, it’s not all about you!”

The basis of spirituality is not simply the recognition that there is a deeper element to our own being. Spirituality is formed from an awareness that there is something out there larger than ourselves.

Noted author and physician Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen tells the story of a doctor who was experiencing burn out. He was having terrible difficulty finding meaning in his work and his life. Then one day a woman came into the emergency room in full labor, and it was clear there would not be time for her obstetrician to come and that he would deliver the baby. As a very experienced ER doctor, he had delivered many babies, and always enjoyed the challenge and skill required.

The baby was born, and as he

was going about the routine of caring for the child in her first seconds of life, he looked and the baby’s eyes were open, looking up at him. In that moment, he suddenly was overcome with an appreciation for what had just transpired, that his was the first human face this child had ever seen. Terribly moved, his eyes radiated a love for the child,

We have always tried to teach our children from a young age and as they grew into adults the importance of community and giving back to help others. Whether it was giving their Halloween candy to children at an orphanage who could not go out and trick or treat, or having a lemonade stand to make some money for the family whose house burned down, we tried to impress upon our family that we are blessed and we need to help others who are not as blessed as we.

Twenty five years ago a group of Temple Beth El women under the leadership of Myra Singer came together and established BARTON’S BOOSTERS, a group who would donate gifts and food for Christmas to 25 families in a government housing project in Boca Raton called Dixie Manor. BARTON’S BOOSTERS has become THE GIVING TREE which helps hundreds of

families each year, not only at the holiday time, but with school items for the beginning of school, and ANY day when a needy family is brought to our attention!

There are many ways for people, young and not so young, to give back to the community and help those families who are struggling. Some of those struggling families are right here in our own synagogue. Please call the temple and ask how you can help to give back to our community – whether you are donating your time or lending financial support - and see how good you will feel when you know others’ lives will be a little easier because you have helped! ONE person can make a difference in the lives of many!

David’s leading an effort to adopt the entire first grade. Individual volunteers will be matched to students each week for reading, and TBE Families will donate books to the school (your children choose and inscribe them) so that each child can build a meaningful personal library at home.

This reading program has special meaning to TBE. Sara Jo and her late husband Arthur Kobacker provided the initial funding and support to build Village Academy. The Kobacker Foundation continues to provide significant financial support to the school.

If you love seeing a child light up when you enter the room, you’ll find this program to be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.

The art of giving and philanthropy is alive and well in the Sisterhood. On a daily basis we are involved in giving back to TBE and the community with the things that we do. Whether it is donating money for the Torah Project or making blankets for the sick with our Knit and Knosh project, Sisterhood is always involved. We raise money through the Sisterhood Gift Shop and our other fundraisers so that we can donate back to TBE, subsidizing great programs like Tot Shabbat, latkes and hamentaschen for all

the children on Chanukah and Purim, and Adult Educational and Cultural programming.

PhilAnthroPy: A cornerstone for eAch generAtionfran Weinberg Earlier this year, Temple Beth El said goodbye to our oldest member. She was Mollie Luks, born in New York in 1907. “Miss Mollie”, as she was known, was 105 years old when she passed.

“She was my mother and my friend, and one of the most interesting people I have ever known.” Mollie’s daughter, Fran Weinberg warmly commented, remembering her mother’s quick wit and razor sharp view of the world. “Mollie graduated from high school early, had a great talent for accounting and loved the stock market. She grew a successful business with my father, Sam who was her true beshert. Philanthropy was always a part of their life, always a part of the way our family lived and the philosophical cornerstone for each generation.”

Both of them were passionate about Judaism and supporting Jewish causes.

Altruistic concern for human welfare and advancement…usually manifested by generosity to socially useful purposes.

During the horrors of WWII, Sam and Mollie provided support and hands on help to bring many people out of Germany and other countries to find safety in America.

Mollie and Samuel, of blessed memory, will always be remembered at Temple Beth El. Their cherished lives will be forever honored through the generous gift of endowments inscribed with their names that have been made by Fran and her family.

tze·da·kahWhen we think of Tzedakah, we often think of putting some coins in a Tzedakah box, or writing a check to our favorite cause or institution. But Tzedakah is so much more than that. The word “Tzedakah” comes from the root word “Tzedek” which means “Justice.” When we are blessed with plenty, and share what we have with those who lack, we balance those scales - making the world more holy, more fair, and more just.

In the book of Leviticus, the Torah teaches us about Erkecha - gifts of time and talent we can give to make a difference in the world. We are taught that when we offer our resources of time, expertise, and our financial wherewithal for holy purposes, not simply do our gifts become holy, but we who give them also feel that sense of holiness.

What follows are some examples of members of our Temple Beth El family who have contributed so much holiness to our congregation and community. We thank them for their gifts, and for the seeds of inspiration they sow.

giving sMAll or lArge – A legAcy for her childrenstephanie loWenStephanie Lowen is a dynamo with a warm laugh and a seemingly endless source of energy. Her cheerful disposition, commitment to Jewish identity and her eagerness to help in a wide variety of projects add up to a bundle of blessings for our congregation. “There are tremendous benefits to being involved. I feel a part of something extremely important and I show that to my children in hopes they too will join and be involved in a synagogue when they are on their own.”

Stephanie serves on several committees at TBE, and says she enjoys her work on the Youth and Education Committee the most. With a master’s degree in education and years of experience as a teacher, she feels that she can be most helpful through sharing educational ideas.

Stephanie and her husband, Nate, are also sustaining members of our synagogue, providing enhanced financial support. “People should understand that there are small ways to donate and large ways, but never to feel you don’t have anything to offer even if you only have a small amount of time, money or expertise to give. Helping is always meaningful and is always appreciated.”

sUPer volUnteermike blackmanMike Blackman can correctly be called a “super volunteer”. His efforts to help his community extend beyond the many activities he leads and participates in at Temple Beth El. The Chronicle is proud to share the news that Mike has been honored with national recognition as the 2012

recipient of the President’s Community Service Award.

In addition to his extensive volunteer involvement at the Temple, Mike has made great contributions to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Palm Beach County, especially within a program called “First Connections”, (providing assistance to others afflicted with blood cancers) and LLS Advocacy Programs in Washington DC on Capitol Hill.

Since becoming members of TBE, Mike and his wife Judy have become involved in many areas of community and leadership. Mike says the areas that have provided him the most satisfaction within TBE have been social action community service programs, Brotherhood, and a variety of lay leadership positions.

“I encourage everyone to get involved. Remember the biggest mitzvah is realizing that when we leave this world we leave it a little better than when we entered it.”

A PAssion for JeWish edUcAtionJay and marilyn WeinbergOne of the most important events at Temple Beth El is the annual Project Nuremberg Lawyer’s Luncheon. Spearheaded by Rabbi Jessica Brockman in cooperation with Lynn University, the event furthers the understanding of the significance of the Nazi war criminal trials.

About 15 years ago, a rare copy of “The Blue Series” of original records from the Nuremberg trials was donated to Lynn University. In 2009 Rabbi Brockman learned of its existence and was ignited with a passion to use the records for community learning. This gave rise to the annual Project Nuremberg Luncheon which has grown in attendance every year.

More than 300 attorneys attended this year’s event in March. Thanks to the sponsorship support of Marilyn and Jay Weinberg, TBE was able to feature Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz as the keynote speaker. Marilyn Weinberg explains she and her husband feel very strongly about supporting education. “Our special interest currently is Project Nuremberg because of its relevance to recent Jewish history and the legal profession. Justice is fundamental to Judaism and we both have worked on similar projects in our former communities.”

The Weinberg family has generously supported many such events at Temple Beth El. “Temple Beth El is our spiritual home. It enhances the quality of our lives by offering us an opportunity to express our gratitude for the good fortune we have enjoyed. Sharing

with others enhances our happiness, and infuses our lives with joy. Temple Beth El and our distinguished Rabbis, programs and outreach make us grateful for our Jewish heritage and practice.”

involving the Whole fAMilyJeff katzJeff Katz is a realtor and IT enthusiast who spends an enormous amount of time volunteering at TBE. Jeff has been a tremendous help in solving some of our technology matters and helping staff and volunteers find their way through cyberspace.

His many activities include volunteering on a technology task force, serving on the Board, and supporting his wife Suzanne and son Jason in their work with Family Promise. Jeff also enjoys taking Adult Education classes and serving on the Adult Education committee of which he is now Chair. “I am actually inspired by the members whose footsteps I am walking in as well as the dedicated clergy and staff. It makes me feel good to contribute to temple, and adds to my fulfillment in life.”

What advice would he give to those thinking about becoming more involved? “Get the whole family involved. Suzanne and I have made a commitment to giving both our time and financial support to TBE. Being involved gives us a greater sense of community.”

mAimonidES inSTiTuTE for JEwIsh LEArnInG

One of the goals of celebrating Bar/Bat Mitzvah at Temple Beth El is to give students the opportunity to acquire both Jewish and life skills which they will hopefully use the rest of their lives. These include such life skills as being responsible for their materials, managing their time to include studying and understanding the importance of repetition when learning new material (practice!!!). The Jewish skills they gain include understanding and teaching the messages of their Torah and Haftarah portions as well as being able to chant them, and understanding and mastering the chanting of the Shabbat morning service.

Another part of our B’nai Mitzvah Program melds life skills with Jewish experience. That is the selection and completion of a Mitzvah Project. The key concept is that as a Jewish adult, you need to understand that you are responsible for making a difference in our world. We encourage students to pick projects/activities for which they have passion. We also encourage them to use all of their talents and skills in their project. Students are invited to submit a photo and explanation of their project to me so that members of Temple Beth El see the wonderful projects in which our

students are involved. Some students are passionate for sports so we encourage them to do something related to sports (collect equipment or have a tournament and raise money for a cause or working with TOPS Soccer with children with special needs). Some students are passionate about animals and they collect blankets, toys and food or volunteer at animal shelters. Still there are students who love children or seniors who volunteer at our Early Childhood Center or at other preschools reading to children and doing art projects or collect items for pediatric wings of hospitals or perform at senior centers. And still other students have been impacted by diseases among friends and family or are passionate about global issues such as pollution or the environment and create projects which make a difference in these areas. In some cases, the passion is peaked right in our school such as one student who, after a class session with JARC (Jewish Association for Residential Care), started volunteering on a weekly basis.

No matter what the origin of the project or the length of its duration the lesson is clear that giving of oneself and making a difference in our world is important. We are so proud of all of our students and how they create meaningful contributions.

The new water slide has been tremendous fun, along with our two new interactive playrooms, Innovation Station and Construction Zone, intended to cultivate creative expression. The children always look forward to our special events including Magic Show, Animal Bounce House, Carnival, Reptile Show, Petting Zoo, the Animal Train, and more.

pre-school Extended day-new options!Starting this fall, plans for our pre-school extended day enrichment program include sports, zumba, creative movement, Hebrew, literacy, art, science, cooking, Imagination Station and Construction Zone. Each afternoon, between 3:00 and 5:30 PM, the children will have two specials, adding opportunities to greatly enrich and expand their day.

What do you do on Memorial Day weekend? For many of our BOFTY (Boca’s Original Federation of Temple Youth) teens the answer is Camp Jenny. BOFTY has always had a culture of giving back to the community. This year alone BOFTY has teamed up with Boca Helping Hands to create Thanksgiving baskets for the hungry, put on a field day for local children of migrant workers, donated prom dresses for cancer patients, and collected funds and volunteered their time to work as counselors at Camp Jenny, an experience that will remain in their hearts forever.

Camp Jenny, named for Jenny Rosenthal who tragically lost her life as a teen, gives underprivileged students the opportunity to experience summer camp. From arts and crafts to water play, zip lining to music classes, these students have the time of their lives during this much too short Memorial Day weekend. In order for campers to attend Camp Jenny, youth groups from around the region are tasked with raising funds for the program. With the support from our TBE congregants, BOFTY was

My mitzvah project was something very close to my heart. It was about melanoma which almost took my Dad’s life. Melanoma is a deadly skin cancer that is caused by over exposure to the sun. To raise money for MD Anderson Cancer Center and awareness about melanoma I had a golf –o-thon. Each golfer asked a sponsor to give a certain amount of money for each hole that they played. We raised over $1000.00 and everyone had a great time

able to raise $15,000.00 at our Annual Camp Jenny Fundraiser this year.

I was fortunate to participate in Camp Jenny along with 9 of our teens and 3 of our alumni. When you see the smiles on the children’s faces from the moment the bus touches Camp Coleman soil and the tears you see when it is time for the campers to head home, you truly understand the meaning of what it is to be part of a caring community and the impact that giving back has.

To access Lot 5A please enter the campus at NW 13th Street/ East University Drive off of Glades Road (just east of the main entrance) and follow the signs to Lot 5A. Buses will begin running an hour before and continue until an hour after services, taking you back and forth between Lot 5A and the Student Union/Kaye Auditorium. Please allow ample time for this shuttle service. On Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur you may park in any legally designated spot.

youth programgrades k-5For our members, we’ve designed our High Holy Days Youth Program to give your kindergarten-fifth grade students an opportunity to participate in an enriching, hands-on experience while parents are praying in the morning worship service in the Rabbi Merle E. Singer Sanctuary. This exciting program is offered at Temple Beth El Main Campus only, and will start at 10:00 AM and finish simultaneously to the adult morning worship service on the first day of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. Children will participate in art projects, stories, song-sessions, snacks and Tefillah. This program is not meant to replace the Children’s or Youth Services, but it is an additional experience that will allow parents to attend the adult worship services at the Temple. Reservation forms must be received by August 5 to ensure proper staffing and group placements. There is a $5.00 charge per child per holiday experience. Students will be grouped by age. Siblings will not be in the same group unless they are in the same grade level at school.
