FROM OUR RABBI

Page 3

Getting Away From It All

In mid-summer our Torah readings come from the book of Bamidbar (Numbers), which details the wandering of the Israelites on their way to the Promised Land. For forty years, our ancestors trekked through the wilderness, far from cities and civilization. They completed the journey without the luxury of interstates, service plazas, or travel agents. Not even a Coleman pop-up tent. And while deep in the Sinai wilderness, at the height of their journey, our ancestors encountered God and received the Torah. Mount Sinai is a relatively unimpressive mountain, and in fact, modern scholars even differ as to its exact geographical position. And while the Torah was given there, its location never became as venerated as the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. And so over the centuries our rabbis pondered the question: “Why did God choose to reveal the Torah in the middle of nowhere?” What is it about the wilderness that makes it the ideal location to receive God’s revelation and commandments? According to Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, a well-known Orthodox rabbi of the 19

th century, “The

desert was the ideal venue for the revelation of His Torah because it was virgin soil, unpolluted as yet by egoism and ambition, undefiled by the pursuit of vanity. He chose the desert far away from the cities, far from society and inhabited lands, far from an already corrupt society…” In other words, God purposely chose to give Israel the Torah right in the middle of the wilderness. It is only there where the Israelites could reflect upon a vision of the world as it ought to be, free from the corrupting influences of our much-less-than-ideal world. Similarly, when we get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we feel rejuvenated, recharged and can embrace a larger view of the world. Such vacations can truly be “the pause that refreshes”. When our children were younger, Linda and I used to take our family on an annual 2-week camping trip. .

Some of our most pleasurable moments were spent hiking, canoeing, gathering wood for a campfire or just figuring out how we would prepare our next meal. Friends would marvel at our choice of vacation, saying that for them “camping” was staying at a Holiday Inn instead of at the Ritz. But I can tell you without hesitation that these were some of the greatest vacations we ever spent. I often think about how our own world-view would become broadened and deepened while spending those wonderful trips camping out by a mountain stream or remote forest. When you’re out enjoying nature in the middle of nowhere, you really do get a feeling of “it just doesn’t get any better than this”. All your typical day-to-day cares seem to melt away, while you make do with only what you’ve brought along for the trip, and you can’t help but get caught up in the natural majesty and absolute serenity of the great outdoors. When we finally return home, we rush around from chore to chore, rarely stopping to catch our breath, much less ponder the meaning of our lives. But free from the shackles of civilization, the wilderness gives us an opportunity to slow down, take in and appreciate all of life’s amazing splendor. So it is clear to me that the Torah could not have been given anywhere else but the wilderness. These days, Linda and I take more cruises or hotel-based vacations than camping trips, but the special joy of getting away from it all remains as rejuvenating as ever. And escaping the daily grind affords us all the opportunity to deepen our relationships with our family and even lay the foundation for spiritual growth. May you and your family make the best of your summer vacation, and return to your regular lives spiritually invigorated and physically recharged. L’Shalom,

Rabbi Mark Zimmerman

FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Shalom Congregation Beth Shalom!

As I have been so fortunate to write in this space for the past two (2) years, “it is (still) with great pleasure and excitement that I write this bulletin article as the (still) new President of our incredible congregation”. When I think back of these past years and all that we have accomplished at Beth Shalom, I could not be prouder. For those of you who attended our Annual Meeting earlier in June, you had a chance to hear the amazing recap of all our activities, programs, educational offerings and fundraising milestones during the past year. In fact, it was one of the largest attended Annual Meeting we have had in many years. The discussion, engagement and delicious brunch prepared by our Men’s Club made for a fan-tastic morning. At that meeting, I laid the foundation for a few key strategic initiatives for the upcoming 2018-2019 (5778-5779) fiscal year that the Board of Trustees and Staff will be engaging around: Building a Sustainable Endowment for the

Synagogue – This is a strategic and necessary piece to secure the long-term viability of Beth Shalom. Although we have an existing endowment, its funding needs to be substantially increased.

Financial governance – As we evolve as a congregation, we need to ensure we have the right governance around our finances. This coincides with the initiative around securing a sustainable endowment.

Engagement Opportunities – The Board will also continue to evaluate how we engage our membership to determine if there are opportunities for better engagement or if there are specific groups within the synagogue with which we can engage more fully. We will continue to ask ourselves, “How can we be a multi-generational kehilla that engages and retains our members at all levels?”.

Succession Planning – Consistent with our grounded governance structure and the goal to continue to be a growing and engaged congregation, we will continue to work on a long term strategic plan to be prepared for the inevitable challenges of leadership transition.

If you have any interest in these initiatives or any other ideas or projects, please reach out to myself ([email protected]) or our amazing Executive Director Loli Gross ([email protected]), and we will be happy get you involved and connected with the right folks. Speaking or our Board of Trustees, it is my pleasure to welcome our new slate of officers and Board Members that were just elected (see full listing in the following bulletin pages). I know I speak for the entire Board that we are excited to serve you in the upcoming years.

One of the decisions for me to take on another term as President was the strategic opportunity to work with such a terrific Board to further strengthen Beth Shalom’s place in the community as an engaging, committed, spiritual, fun and strong kehilla (congregation or sacred community). We are here to serve the congregation, but your input is not only needed, it is appreciated. So, as I mentioned above, please feel free to reach out to myself, staff members or anyone on the Board with any comments, concerns or questions you may have. Your input is critical to our success and ability to grow as a kehilla. Additionally, at the Annual Meeting, for those of you who were not able to attend, the congregation approved the updated Constitution as proposed by the Board of Trustees. After a much-needed modernization after 27 years, our new, updated Constitution sets a solid foundation for us strengthen our committee governance, update the inconsistencies and better define many of responsibilities and duties of various positions that have simple evolved throughout the years. I want to sincerely thank the Constitution Revision Committee who diligently worked with me for almost a year to prepare a document to present to the Board and Congregation: Roberta Byrum, Jeff Budd, Diane Fisher, David Kleber, Stan Shapiro and Rabbi Zimmerman. So as the summer months take over and we enjoy family vacations, longer days, kids at camp and maybe a bit slower pace, it is also a time for us at Beth Shalom to begin planning for a busy prospective member season as well as the High Holidays in the fall. We have so many exciting events and programs in upcoming year that all will have ample opportunity to lend a hand. As I know you always do, keep Beth Shalom top of mind for not only new members to join our kehilla, but also youth for our USY and Kadima programs and especially our amazing AlefBet Preschool that now offers an amazing opportunity for Babies through Pre-K! Lastly, one of the pillars of our shul is our amazing Shabbat experience. Our services are so participatory and full of ruach, and the sense of community coupled with a delicious lunch prepared by our Sisterhood during our Kiddush is really special. So, make it a priority to come to services on Shabbat morning or Friday evening. Even if the Rabbi’s sermon is what gets you out of bed, that works as well! See you in Shul!

MAZEL TOV TO OUR GRADUATES

COLLEGE

Children’s Read Atlanta

Thank you for all the children's books you have donated this year.

We will be continuing this worthwhile tzedakah project this year. Many of us clean out and freshen up over the summer, so be on the lookout for books for children ages Birth to Five or Six. If you have books for children up through second grade we can also use those for older siblings. We cannot use books for adults. If you have that type of book to remove from your home, please consider your local Friends of the Library.

Just to refresh your memory, and to introduce this program to those new to it, we take new and gently used books that are then cleaned up and organized. Our readers go into Pre-K classrooms in schools in Dekalb County and the City of Atlanta that have been designated Title I Schools or Headstart facilities and read a few books to the children. The children are then each given bags of books to take home and have for their own. Many times there are no books in these homes before these books are brought home. This little bit of thoughtfulness on our part to share books we want to get rid of is helping us to perform Tikkun Olam.

You will find boxes by the elevator downstairs and near the women's bathroom in the education wing hallway upstairs. Thank you in advance for your donations.

Getting Educated About Sisterhood this Summer

If you are anything like me, you may know very little about Sisterhood. After all, until 2 years ago my view of CBS Sisterhood seemed hazy. I assumed the usual. These are women who cook and serve. Maybe they plan a fund raising silent auction or a fashion show. What I did not know is that without CBS Sisterhood, a part of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, Congregation Beth Shalom would fail to exist in its current form.

Here is some background information.

According to California Rabbi Deborah Silver, “Women’s League for Conservative Judaism was founded by Mathilde Schechter in 1918. Women’s League developed three priorities. The first was education, to make Judaism available and accessible over the course of a lifetime. The second was fundraising. Its Torah Fund campaign, with a suggested annual contribution of $6.11 in 1945, today meets its annual goal of around two and a half million dollars every year on behalf of JTS, Ziegler and the Schechter Institute. As for supporting synagogues, local sisterhoods are unfailingly generous and sustaining presences on balance sheets, some to such an extent that I’ve heard them called the “shul’s ATM.”

Rabbi Silver sums up the current goals of our Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood. We make Judaism accessible through online Women’s League podcasts, Marsha Fish’s monthly Chai Mitzvah class, Sisterhood Book Club, Sisterhood Shabbat, and our contributions to the congregational religious school. Every Women’s League confer-ence, regional or national, requires Sisterhood women to lead each minyan, Torah reading, Haftorah and Dvar Torah. In addition, our Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood raised nearly $7,000 dollars this year for Torah Fund, providing opportunities for the education of Rabbis, Cantors, and educational directors at Jewish Theological Seminary in New York and Ziegler in Los Angeles along with the other Conservative Seminaries around the world.

However, the contributions to Congregation Beth Shalom from its Sisterhood are staggering. Each and every year, our CBS Sisterhood funds a line item of $10,000 dollars to the CBS budget. CBS Sisterhood pays Jan Adler’s whole salary as our in-house caterer. The money raised at sponsored kiddushim supports our synagogue. Furthermore, our superb gift shop is stocked, staffed and run by Sisterhood. Our profits support our synagogue. In addition, Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood has paid for the Jerusalem stone added to our ark, paid for extra cabinets in the kitchen and in the gift shop, given seed money for Siddurim, participated in the CBS Mezuzah Project, donated $1,000 to MACOM, our community mikvah, donated to the Torah Restoration Project, provided snacks, holiday treats to the preschool and religious school, contributed money for CBS youth scholarships to conventions, and provided general financial relief in our congregational operating budget. Every year we are asked and every single year Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood sustains our own synagogue and the greater community as well.

So, would Congregation Beth Shalom be the same without our in- house catering? Would it be the same without our gift shop? Would it be the same without the constant contributions to projects small and large? Obviously, the answer is “no”.

Now that you know more about Sisterhood too, please understand that Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood needs your support. At the very least, become a member this year. Donate your small share toward the $25,000 (and more) our Sisterhood annually contributes to our Congregation for your benefit. Pay your dues, and prepare to join us for our wonderful August 19

th opening meeting. Now you know, Sisterhood really needs you, and Congregation Beth

Shalom really needs Sisterhood.

Enjoy the summer,

Cheryl Garfinkel, Rene Montaigne and Jodi Beck , Sisterhood Management Team

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF LIFE LONG LEARNING

Page 17

I hope you are having a relaxing summer. While we do find some time to take a much needed break we also spend many hours planning all the wonderful programs for the coming year in the Gilner Religious School, our youth services, and for the general membership. And this year we are not even waiting until the Fall. Check out the Beth Shalom website to see all the great opportunities to join with your shul family this summer. The Gilner Religious School will begin on Sunday, August 19

th. Our staff will be returning on August 12

th for a day

of learning with other teachers in the greater Atlanta community and to prepare for another great year. And our madrichim will come together that same evening to learn and enhance their skills as classroom assistants. Watch your inboxes for the details. Please mark your calendars to join us for our back to school parent orientation. As always, we have a number of new exciting changes this year, so your attendance at this meeting is important. We will discuss our new seventh grade live on-line learning program for students who learn from home on Tuesday and the exciting changes taking place for those that are in attendance. Our 3

rd through 6

th grade on-line program will continue to use the same

program used this past year. The full GRS calendar, as well as the school registration forms can be found on the Education tab of the Beth Shalom website. You can also keep tabs of any changes to the calendar on the synagogue’s general calendar also found on the website. Throughout the year, there are times where we may need to adjust the calendar due to circumstances not always in our control. All dates for the coming year have already been noted on the main calendar. If you are not sure of whether or not there will be Junior Congregation or Mini-minyan on any given Shabbat, you can easily find out with a few clicks of your mouse. You can help your children reinforce their Hebrew and Prayers this summer by using some of the resources below. Whenever you are learning a new language, it is best to practice regularly so that you do not forget what you have learned. Here are some great and fun ways to practice:

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING

By the time you read this, we will be deep in the midst of Camp Alefbet! During camp, our days are filled with water play, gardening, painting, dancing, singing and so much laughter. Each camp week, the children explore nature and earth themes in a hands-on, sensory, creative way. Camp Alefbet 2018 topics include gardening, recycling, America, bug & birds and we will continue to build on our imagination, friendships and teamwork. It’s a summer of fun and learning – which will lead into our preschool year of fun and learning too! The Alefbet Preschool is a special place where we are dedicated to our children, families and Kehillah (community). We model and build Kavod (respect), Chesed (kindness), Tzedakah (justice/charity) and Ahava (love). Our curriculum is focused on the development of the WHOLE child. We foster a strong foundation for spiritual, social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth. We focus on this development by “Learning through Play,” through careful observation and by incorporating “Emergent” curriculum. This coming year, we will be opening a brand new classroom – our Alefbet Babies classroom! This room is designed for 6 week – 12 month old babies. Know any babies looking for a quality, warm & loving environment? Let them (and their parents) know about us! We love sharing our preschool program! Contact Risa Walter, Director of Early Childhood Education, at 770.399.0766, Risa@bethshalom,net or check out our website at Alefbetpreschool.com for more information. B’Shalom,

Risa Walter PS We are around this summer – how about you? We have 2 special summer Tot Rockin Shabbat services, with song, crafts and potluck dinners, designed for young families! Check out page 11 for the details. Hope to see y’all there!

OUR NEW 2018-2019 KUSY Board

And Ryan Tourial, Youth Director

The Youth Board is hard at work planning what is shaping up to be another great year in KUSY! This year has been so exciting and the new youth board is even more excited to plan for this upcoming school year. We are planning Lock-ins, Israel themed events, social action projects, and fun game days. This summer, the other Atlanta Youth Directors and I have been planning multiple inter-chapter events. This year, KUSY will hang out and participate in events with kids from Sababa (Etz Chaim), Chai USY (AA Syangogue), CSI USY (Congregation Shearith Israel), and the revamped chapter at B’nai Torah. Applications to join the youth department are now open! Remember that 3rd-5th graders are eligible for Jr. Kadima, 6th-8th graders are eligible for Kadima and 9th-12th graders are eligible for USY. Being a member of the youth department also make you eligible to attend conventions across the southeast. USYers and Kadimaniks are eligible to attend conventions. I want to look ahead a bit. I am pleased to announce that Congregation Beth Shalom will host the Spring Sub-Regional Convention in March of 2019. High School students from our Sub-Region will be at our Kehillah for the weekend. This is a homestay convention. If you are willing to open your home to some of these students or would like to help with some of the logistics during this weekend, please let me know. We will send out another formal notice early in the fall. Congregation Etz Chaim in Marietta is hosting the fall-Sub Regional convention, which is open to Middle Schoolers and High Schoolers. With two major conventions in Atlanta this will be a great opportunity for both kids and parents to see up close what USY is all about. Be on the lookout for KUSY’s opening activities and for opening events with the other Atlanta Chap-ters. Don’t forget to sign your child up for one of our three youth programs! To obtain an application, go to our website. Click on Synagogue Life then Youth. Have a great rest of your summer!
