Dear Chavereem,

We have a popular prayer when celebrating

special occasions: “Praised are you our God,

creator of the universe, who has supported us,

protected us, and brought us to this special mo-

ment.” Most of know this prayer as the

“Shechecheeyanoo” which is recited at special

occasions and also when we begin new mo-

ments in our lives. As your Rabbi of Temple B’nai

Jacob for the last 8 years, I have recited that

B’racha on countless special moments of holi-

days, celebrations, and new experiences.

Throughout my Rabbinate at TBJ I have been

blessed with the wonderful opportunity and

honor to serve as your spiritual leader through

moments of joy and also moments of sadness.

Overall, I have shared incredible Jewish

“Schecheheeyanoo” experiences with so many

of you as we worked so hard in building our vi-

brant and potentially great synagogue. All of it

has given me countless memories that will be

forever implanted in my mind. Most of all it has

been my pleasure to get to know many of you

personally as Sharon and I consider TBJ to be an

extension of our family. We are so grateful to

have celebrated the births of our four children

with our TBJ loved ones. Those moments Sharon

and I will always cherish.

Now it is time in the history of our congregation

to recite another “Schecheheeynoo” as our

synagogue reaches a new stage in its develop-

ment. In a mutually agreed upon decision be-

tween myself, Sharon, and Temple leaders, it

has been decided that I become the Rabbi

Emeritus (retired Rabbi) in a year from now. And

the reason for this is very exciting and uncompli-

cated; it is simply time for TBJ to have a full-time

Rabbi who can devote him or herself to the fur-

ther growth of our beloved congregation. Now

that is worth a “Schechecheeyanoo”.

The search for a full-time Rabbi is an exciting,

reflective and thoughtful task. I know that our

Temple leaders will tell you more about the

process itself. It requires the complete dedica-

tion of our membership to look for a spiritual

leader who can represent our synagogue in the

community and who can work for the further-

ance of our growing congregation.

Through the years at TBJ, as a part-time Rabbi, I

knew there were opportunities for programs to

insure growth that could only be accomplished

by a full-time Rabbi. In turn, learning and ac-

cepting my limits has been challenging . I am

now delighted to take on a different role in the

synagogue as the Rabbi Emeritus and help sup-

port my full-time successor in whatever ways I

can. I am looking forward to that opportunity!

Sharon, Joshua, Micah, Eitan, Eliana, and I are

excited to be part of the future plans for the

synagogue. In fact, Sharon is already planning

Joshua’s Bar Mitzvah at TBJ of course. Person-

ally, I plan to remain active in the growth of the

synagogue and serve proudly as your Rabbi

Emeritus. And even though my role and title will

change in the synagogue, I will continue to serve

you with pride, honor, and love. And together

we will say many a “Schechecheeyanoo” to-

gether as we reach new milestones in the life of

our congregation.

But now it is that time to recite another: And although

change can be frightening this change will be for good and

for a blessing. So together let us say “Praised are you dear

God who has kept us in life, who has supported us, and

who has enabled all of us to reach this special moment in

the life of our congregation as we begin the search for a

new and full-time spiritual leader, amen.”

Todah Rabbah and I will see you at Shul,

Rabbi Dr. David J. Abrams

THE VOICE

From Our Rabbi, cont’d.

This is an exciting time for all of us at TBJ. Our Synagogue

has gone through a physical transformation that should

make us all proud. I would like to concentrate on the numer-

ous members who, without their involvement, this remodel-

ing would never have occurred. In an effort to recognize

them and “introduce” our new look to all our members and

guests; we are planning a “Re-Dedication” on the Friday

Night Shabbat Service of August 14th

@ 7 PM. We are still

working on the details. So please save the date.

Our annual “Open House” is scheduled for Sunday August

23rd.

You will be able to pay for religious school tuition, buy

extra High Holiday tickets for non-members, meet with your

Temple Leaders and of course shop for gifts from our

Womens League Gift Shop. Feel free to bring a friend and

have them see for themselves our refurbished Sanctuary and

introduce them to our Shul and its leaders.

This upcoming school year we plan on adding music to our

religious school curriculum and to instill more music

throughout the year for everyone to enjoy. Music has always

played an important part in the life of the Jewish people.

Music has the power to uplift the spirit and inspire the soul.

It can be an invaluable resource to reach out to all of us and

encourage more participation of ALL synagogue members.

On a personal note, as some of you aware Sallee recently

lost her brother and just last month lost her mother. This has

been a difficult time for our family. It made me realize how

vulnerable we are to such tragedies but it also made me re-

alize how important community is and especially our Jewish

customs. We are very lucky to have many friends here in

Florida and up north.

Every law and every custom of Jewish mourning and com-

forting has, at its core, the overwhelming motivation to sur-

round those who are dying and those who will grieve with a

supportive community. While some may argue that facing

death and coping with grief heighten one’s feeling of alone-

ness, the Jewish approach places loss and grief in the com-

mon context of family and friends. My supportive Commu-

nity is Temple B’nai Jacob of Wellington. The support and

comfort that our family has received has been overwhelm-

ing. I would like to thank those who, through whatever

means, expressed their sympathy during this time.

Most of you are aware that Rabbi Abrams and our Syna-

gogue, have decided that this is the best time for us to begin

the search for a full time Rabbi to lead us into the future.

Rabbi Abrams is our founding Rabbi at Temple B’nai Jacob of

Wellington and will be designated as Rabbi Emeritus. To

quote Rabbi Abrams, “The reason for this is very exciting and

uncomplicated; it is simply time for TBJ to have a full-time

Rabbi who can devote him or herself to the further growth

of our beloved congregation.” As much as change for some

of us will be difficult. This can only be looked at as a positive

step in the growing of our Synagogue. The Temple Board will

be selecting a few individuals that will be spearheading the

search for our new spiritual leader. In the next few months

we will be setting up some small focus groups to get input

from members of our congregation. Membership will be

kept informed 100% on our progress.

Feel free to contact myself or anyone on the Board with any

questions.

Notes from the Palm Beach County Jewish Educators

in Israel

We are proud of the three B’nai Jacob teachers who were

awarded education grants by the Friedman Commission on

Jewish Education to join a small group of Palm Beach

County Religious School Educators in Israel who are cur-

rently visiting our “twin” cities in the Tzahar region. During

the school year our B’nai Jacob students had the opportu-

nity to share pictures, stories, and candy with the students

in this region. Morah Marion is there now meeting them in

person. I thought you would enjoy reading a few excerpts

from the Teachers’ Blog:

“We had a very full schedule in Rosh Pina today which

started with an unexpected, amazing tour of The Mifne Cen-

ter, an autism prevention and treatment center that focuses

on one family, one child at a time truly a one-of-a-kind fa-

cility with a team of experts in various fields. We were all

taken by what this unassuming organization and group of

professionals are able to accomplish with their personalized

and intense approach.

Then off to a brief tour of Rosh Pina including the history

center and original Rosh Pina synagogue still in use today.

From there, we visited Nimrod's Lookout, overlooking the

valley and the Golan Heights, a memorial site in memory of

Nimrod Segev, an Israeli soldier killed in the line of duty

while protecting the Israeli border with Syria in 2006. It was

created and is maintained by his father.

Next, we stopped at Beerie Lookout, similar to Nimrod's but

with newly decorated benches for visitors that were deco-

rated with mosaics by OUR region's March of the Living par-

ticipants this past spring.

From there we visited the Ort School, both the elementary

and high school. We learned about a special program called

"There is a Future" and their Israeli Air Force program, simi-

lar to our junior ROTC.

Lunch at Bracha's home in Rosh Pina was amazingly deli-

cious, especially the couscous topped with roasted vegeta-

bles in a savory broth! Our afternoon concluded with a spe-

cial planning session (at the Partnership Together offices)

for our teaching session tomorrow night at the English Lan-

guage Enhancement Program with 12-year-olds seeking to

improve their English with our intensive and fun program----

more about that tomorrow.“

A personal note from our Morah Marion,"Today in Rosh

Pina was an emotional day for me. A visit to Mifne, a Center

for Autism, where their amazing program is bringing won-

derful results to both the children and their parents. They

should be proud of their accomplishments. A stop at Nim-

rod's Lookout brought tears to all our eyes. Nimrod's father

related the story of his son's dedication and devotion to the

Israeli army and his fellow soldiers. When speaking of his

son's demise by enemy attack you could feel his pain and

also see the pride he had for his son. Tomorrow we will

spend most of our day teaching and interacting with our

twin classrooms and teachers.“

We all look forward to learning more, directly from Morah

Marion, as she shares this very unique teaching experience

with our school and synagogue membership.

Mission Statement

Temple B’nai Jacob of Wellington is a Conservative, egalitar-

ian synagogue serving the Western communities of Palm

Beach County. Temple B’nai Jacob seeks to inspire each

member to become more deeply connected to his or her

Jewish identity by providing relevant worship experiences,

life-long educational experiences, opportunities for social

action, and a connection to Jewish culture. We are a di-

verse and multi-generational congregation committed to

serving as a center for contemporary Jewish life.

I used to be what could be

called a “shul pew sitter”

when I first joined this syna-

gogue. I joined at the insistence of our long time Florida

friends Andrea and Alan Cohan who were members long before

Holly and I decided to donate money to help a good cause, not

ever planning on doing much more. Then retirement time

came. I had no clue what I was going to do to pass the long

days ahead. I made a vow to myself that as soon as I retired I

was going to start attending Shabbat morning services every

week. I kept that promise and have done even more. I told

Alan when he became co-president to keep me in mind should

he need any help. (I really didn’t know Morry very well then, so

I was unaware of his total unselfish commitment to this syna-

gogue.) Alan called on me occasionally, and I would always

agree to whatever he asked of me.

Then one day it happened. I was asked if I would do the book-

keeping using Quickbooks to help Liz and Alan so they could do

other temple tasks. I had never used QB before, but they con-

vinced me that it would be easy for me to learn as I taught

math and had owned my own business in the past. It took me a

while to learn, and my new buddy Jerry Bank tried very pa-

tiently to teach me and watch me muddle through it without

drowning. Everyone seemed happy that someone else was

doing the tedious work, especially when new situations

popped up, and, believe me, they do! A little more than a year

later, I was asked to become the treasurer when Carol Newman

could no longer find the time to continue. I agreed but wasn’t

sure I could be both bookkeeper and treasurer at the same

time. However, after doing it now for 2 months, I find it easier

to do both because one relates to the other. It didn’t end

there.

After I missed one board meeting, I was asked to head the re-

decoration committee to update our shul. I accepted because I

was told there would be a committee to work with me. Having

never been in charge of something so vast, I was reluctant but

honored, as I knew the shul was in desperate need of a lift. I

started that job the same week. I inaugurated the first meeting

a week later and was immediately researching painters, carpet

and chairs, among other things. We got the job done within 2

months and I feel a great satisfaction sitting in my new shul

seat enjoying the scenery.

The one thing I didn’t mention was how fantastic it has been to

work with some really great people on a regular basis as we

made progress throughout these projects. If I wasn’t doing all

this volunteer work I would never have met some really won-

derful workers like Morry, Liz, Dean,Earl, Jerry, Valerie Solo-

mon, and all the other worshippers whom I see every Saturday

and sometimes Friday night. Let me not forget to mention

Donna Goldman who prepares the Oneg/Kiddush food on Fri-

days and Judy Lederer who pours the wine and grape juice and

brings the food prepared from the kitchen on Saturdays. Vol-

unteering has given me a new meaning in my retirement days;

it keeps me as busy as I want to be, while I still have time to be

with my wife, family, and friends of over 40 years. It has been

great for me and I invite each of you who read this to try it for

yourself. There has never been a time I wished I had not gotten

involved. All the dire warnings from my friends have not come

to be. I have a positive attitude about what I am doing, and I

invite you to become involved in the building and strengthening

our shul community.

The Formation of the Squad

By Emily Thal and Rachel Cohen

The birth of The Squad began from a deep love of Judaism. A

group of us volunteered each Sunday to help during Reli-

gious School. After a while, we found that we truly enjoyed

each other’s company and wanted to take our newly formed

friendships a step further. A group of mothers supported our

ideas and helped us form a Youth Group called “The Squad”.

We are different than most groups because we get to decide

ourselves what we want to do and then we promote our ac-

tivities. We are planning a bonfire, a movie night, surfing

lessons, skating, a pool party, and many more activities.

We will support our activities by having fundraisers such as

bake sales, a Wake-a-Thon, garage sales, etc. The TBJ Board

formed a Youth Group Fund to which anyone can donate so

this will help us reach our goals. Please consider contributing

to our fund, as it will allow more teens in our Temple to par-

ticipate in our activities. The Squad teens want to incorpo-

rate Jewish traditions into some of our activities. For in-

stance, since our upcoming evening pool party will begin

after Shabbat, we will have a Havdalah service beforehand.

The Squad appreciates all the support we have received

from our Squad coaches, Rabbi Abrams, Joe Grossman, and

the TBJ Board in helping us achieve our vision of building a

teenage community within Temple B’nai Jacob. The Squad

members are looking forward to a fun-filled year and

strongly encourage all high school age teens to come to our

events and join our group. For more information about our

upcoming activities, please email Liz at the Temple of-

fice:[email protected].
