REFLECTIONS and OBSERVATIONS From Rabbi Sherman SteinFrom Rabbi Sherman SteinFrom Rabbi Sherman SteinFrom Rabbi Sherman Stein

The drama of Purim, the Feast of Lots, was enacted in

ancient Persia where our ancestors lived as a minority. King Ahasuerus, who may have been Xerxes (486-465 B.C.E.) vested control of his empire’s 127 provinces in the hands of a power-seeking politician named Haman. This

heavy-handed despot developed a consuming hatred of Mordecai, leader of the Jewish community. Why? Because Mordecai refused to bow down to him whenever they were in a face

to-face encounter. In this refusal, Haman perceived a threat to his rising power. As is often common in situations of this nature, Haman’s hostility extended beyond Mordecai to the leader’s entire people, for “it seemed contemptible to lay hands on Mordecai alone … Wherefore Haman

sought to destroy all the Jews.” Haman began to carry out his evil designs with a sly campaign of slander. He branded the Jews of the empire as a people “whose laws are different from any other people, neither keep they the king’s laws.” He also took pains to bolster his plea for permission to exterminate them with an offer “to pay ten thousand talents of silver into the hands of those who have charge of the King’s treasury.” To a dictatorial tyrant, normal r eligious or group differences are dangerous and must be suppressed. And, quite often, their totalitarian states regard cultural distinctions among peoples as disloyalty. Yes, even in democratic countries, there still persists, in some individuals, a primitive and barbaric dislike of the unlike. The Festival of Purim, celebrated this year of February 24th, bears not only a message of triumph but, also, one of challenge. The Jews of ancient Persia were delivered from the evil machinations of Haman. But, in truth, the underlying tensions, the conditions in which inter-group hostility is born and nurtured, have not, as yet, been significantly corrected. That remains the task of every generation-to replace ignorance with knowledge, fear with understanding, and unreasoning with sympathy, friendship, and love. L’shalom, Rabbi Sherman SteinRabbi Sherman SteinRabbi Sherman SteinRabbi Sherman Stein P.S. Please join me when our congregation plays host to the general community on Sunday, February 10th, between Noon and 4:30 PM. That’s the occasion when the acclaimed traveling exhibit, “The Nazi Scourge: Postal and Monetary evidence of the Holocaust” will be located in our social hall. Many sources have, already, predicted a large turnout because of the fast-growing interest in the unique contents of the presentation.

TORAH STUDYTORAH STUDYTORAH STUDYTORAH STUDY Our Torah Portion for “First Shabbat Morning” activ ities on February 2nd is Yitro. Exodus

18:1-20:23. In brief, we find, portrayed within it, two main th emes: 1. Sharing leadership of the community; and 2. Appreciating what happened at Mount Sinai. The Haftarah is from Isaiah 6:1-7:6; 9:5-6. The connection between the Sidra and the Haftarah is that the former contains the revelation of the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai, an event that was witnessed by the entire people of Israel. On the other hand, the latter brings us the personal revelation of God to Isaiah and the beginning of his prophetic career.

“VARIETY - THE SPICE OF LIFE” At a recent Board Meeting a most complementary discussion ensued concerning our Layleaders. Joel Rosenblum, Gerald Golub, Rabbi Selinger, Dr. Fred & Nellie Schweiger, Shelly Lebowitz, and Ilene Basan have conducted Friday Night Services in their own distinct styles and manner. Their gracious participation has reminded us that worship is not to be considered a constant and repetitious recital, as our traditional Prayers and Hymns have always been modified and stylized by our own humanly diverse personalities and preferences. We like to encourage more congregational participation as Layleaders. It is easy and familiar. It will add perspective and insight to your level of Friday Service enjoyment and give you a sense of accomplishment. Contact Joel Rosenblum for more information. In addition the Board has encouraged an ongoing change in variety and quality of our Oneg Shabbats by requesting a variety of sponsors (members) to provide a better variety of cakes, cookies, cheese, fruits etc. We are fortunate to have a number of members that frequently bake or provided items for our Oneg Table which is really enjoyed. Remember if you have a special occasion or event to celebrate, please volunteer as an Oneg Sponsor by signing up on the bulletin board calendar or by contacting a Board Member. “WORDS ----------------FROM THE BOOK OF JOEL” That God created mankind, male and female, in His own image is a matter of faith. That our fore-bearers strove for centuries to perfect themselves in the image of Almighty is a matter of historical fact. During the long centuries when the God of the Jews and of the historians was the unchallenged ultimate Being of the West. Europeans, and later, the Americans who were moved to imitate God; this is a central category in Jewish piety. The imitation of Christ, God-made-into-man, was equally central for Christians. But, can an unbeliever enter the presence of God? Not possible to believe even if just to examine? But how about knowledge of God as simply a literary character . . . This then neither precludes not requires a faith. After all, Religion may be seen as literature that has succeeded beyond any writer’s wildest dreams. No character on stage, page or screen has ever had the reception that God has had. Parents who would be done with Him cannot keep their children from Him, for not only has everyone heard of God, everyone, even now, can tell you something about Him!
