Dear Parents, Last Friday, 17 February we celebrated the induction of our School Prefects and Captains with the support of parents, Mr Rodgers, P&C President and past School Captain Mrs Lucy Forrest ( nee Elliott ). The band certainly set the scene with a strong rendition of “Eye of the Tiger”. A delicious morning tea was provided by our hospitality students and staff. Our guest speaker Lucy Forrest was 1989 Wavell School Captain and has since completed study at the University of Queensland and qualified as a lawyer. Mrs Forrest worked initially in the Supreme Court and is currently in private practice. She delivered a strong message to students about the need to make the most of every opportunity at school. It was pleasing to hear that the same great programs available to Lucy in 1989 still exist and indeed are stronger at Wavell. Leadership is an important attribute to nurture and encourage. The development of leadership through many opportunities at school is an important aspect of the well-rounded education provided at Wavell. At the Induction, I spoke of the need to ensure leadership is exercised with integrity and how important this quality is for everyone. I quoted Warren Buffet , a powerful and influential entrepreneur. In looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you.Warren Buffet Over the past few weeks we have inducted our Student Representative Council Executive and members, the Arts, Sports and House Captains and Year 9 Leaders. I particularly wish our elected School Captains; Santage Keighley, Van Nguyen, Joshua Madden and Rein Kleidon and Prefects, well for the contribution and service that they will provide in their leadership roles this year. On Monday the much anticipated Gonski Report into education funding was released and brought with it some hope for a way towards a fairer funding system for all Australian schools. Unfortunately, given the economic climate and determination for a surplus Federal Budget, any real move towards change has stalled. The current grossly distorted and unfair system seems set to remain in place for some years to come. I encourage parents to be aware of the implications of the report and its impact on schools. Our mission must be to encourage our politicians’ to act quickly on a genuine implementation plan. I thank parents for their attendance at the P&C meeting last Tuesday and congratulate our P&C Executive and Sub-Committee Executives for assuming these important roles which provide support to our school. It would be great to see even more parents at next month’s meeting. Valentine’s Day

“Welcome to Wavell” has always been a great success with everyone involved and this year was no different! It is a chance for Year 8s to have fun and get to know each other, as well as for the

Prefects to interact and play games with their form classes, with the support of the Form Teachers. Games varied from Chain Tag to Numbers but as always, Dodge Ball had the most enthusiastic participation. The sunny afternoon added to student enthusiasm. Free food and drinks were supplied for everyone involved to re-boost their energy levels, before heading off to play the “awesome” Tug-of-War! Prefects unfortunately were not allowed to assist Year 8, but some kind souls couldn’t bear not to help. Special thanks to Mrs Hickman, Mrs Madden and the Year 9 Leaders for arranging a fantastic afternoon.

Netball Excellence Camp

On Wednesday, 15 and Thursday, 16 February the Senior Netball Excellence class made their way to Elanda Point. The eighteen kilometre canoe journey to reach Harry's Hut and back took over two days. Conditions over Lake Cootharaba were not ideal but the girls worked hard and managed to make their round trip successfully. Some girls ended up in the water more often than others. They worked hard and learned a lot about themselves and others.

Year 8 Camp 2012

Our School Captains and Prefects assisted students to celebrate Valentine’s Day by delivering numerous gifts. These ranged from cards to hearts and roses. Many “romantic” items were presented by the Prefects to surprised and embarrassed students.. The singing of romantic songs left a “lot to be desired”, but in the typical Wavell way, the Prefects did their best.

Congratulations to Hiale Roycroft on his selection in the Queensland Academy of Sport for U15 Rugby League Squad for 2012.

Toby Pinder has been selected to play in the Metropolitan North U18 Baseball.

Wednesday, 20 June until Friday, 22 June Due to the large number of enrolments in 2012, we have sourced another venue in order to accommodate everybody. The new venue is Total Adventures at Noosa North Shore. The camp facility will accommodate our whole cohort and offers similar activities to our previous venue. We have managed to keep the price the same for this year at $220. It is expected that all Year 8 students attend this camp. To pay or make a payment plan please contact Mrs Deb Deaves BSM.

Welcome to Wavell Band Tour to Theodore

Sporting Representatives

What a wonderful start to the 2012 Wavell Rugby League Excellence Program. 180 boys from Year 9 to 12 braved adverse conditions and extreme challenges to traverse the foothills and waterways of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. This early-season experience has become a feature of the school’s program. The activity allowed groups to develop great leadership, team work and conflict resolution skills. The challenge also required students to endure new levels of physical fatigue and the loss of creature comforts. The behaviour and effort of our students has improved every year. The camp organiser Trent Webb and Sunday Creek Outdoor Education Centre staff are a vital part of this transformation. Time has come to start playing football. Let the games begin!

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY PRODUCTS

- A CAUTION! In ITD courses, students are required to complete a number of practical exercises. Once completed, students are permitted to take these items home. Parents need to be aware that the products are the results of a teaching exercise only. They do not and were not intended to conform to Australian Standards and should not be used for their normal practical purposes. Legal opinion suggests that parents would be under an onus to similarly warn any other party accordingly who might try to use the products.
