Expert Review Group – Report You may remember that in mid May the Education Department’s External Review Group spent four days reviewing all aspects of our school. Today I received the final report outlining the areas of our school that are going well and those requiring attention. The actions outlined in the report will have a significant impact on the way the school leadership group works with teachers and how teachers work together to develop a common understanding of how children are to be taught. Within the next few weeks the Education Department will make the report available through the Schools Online website: http://www.det.wa.edu.au/schoolsonline/home.do I will let you know when the report has been put onto this site.

The ERG report will be discussed at the next School Council and P & C Meetings.

Faction Cross Country Carnival: 3 August Congratulations to all students who put in a personal best effort at our cross country carnival. I was most impressed by the number of children who genuinely ran to the best of their ability. It is an important life lesson to aim for personal best in all aspects of school.

Thank you to Mr Taylor for his organisation and to the many staff who helped out on the course and at the finish line. It was great to see so many parents and family members were able to come and support the event. More photos can be found in the Student section of our website under “Mr Taylor”. Very soon the presentation and layout will change. Whilst it operates in much the same way, not all the photos and articles can be transferred across. So, if you want one last look at photos and articles from earlier this year and from 2011, now is the time to visit the website. http://www.upperswanps.wa.edu.au/

Interschool Cross Country The interschool events for students in year 4 up to year 7 were held at Altone Park last Friday, the 10 August. Unfortunately I was not able to make it, but I did receive reports of how well behaved your children were and the great team spirit they showed by supporting and encouraging one another. I thank the many parents who were able to attend and Mr Taylor for his organisation. Results: Whilst I don’t have the team points at hand, I know Upper Swan finished second overall, which is a mighty performance from those who participated. Consistency is the key and, as you can see, many of our students finished inside or very close to the top 10. All children score points, whether they finish 1st or 24th, so every place counts. What they learn will enable them to work effectively with other teachers as we strive towards improving the quality of teaching, which in turn should lead to improved learning for all children. Although having teachers away from school has a down side in terms of class disruption, it is essential for us to continually build the knowledge and skills of our teachers. Footy Fanatics

Six students who attend our school represented Upper Swan Football club at half time of the Swan Districts WAFL game on Saturday, 4 August 2012. They played a fantastic game representing their club then watched the black ducks league team get back into some winning form.

Assemblies The next two assemblies are: Year 1, Room 7 Friday 17 August Year 5/6 Room 10 Friday 31 August

From the Associate Principals’ Office 1. Bullying Upper Swan Primary School has a No Tolerance Policy to bullying. We have a Plan

in place. Please see me if you would like a copy. If your child reports any incidents to you, please let us know immediately so we can

follow it up. 2. Australian Maths Competition Congratulations to all students who sat for the Australian Maths Competition last

week. We should get the results back soon. 3. Mathletics Congratulations to Ciara Mather and Chelsie Alessandrino who have achieved a gold

certificate in Mathletics this week. 4. School Maths Competition Thank you to all the students who entered the competition in the last newsletter.

The solutions are: The rule is that the number of digits in a line cubed gives you the total of that line. The 10th line would then be 10 cubed is 1000. The first correct entry, randomly drawn by Mrs Guy was Holly Alessandrino. This week’s competition is along a similar line. Please return your entry to Mrs

Stotter by Wednesday 29 August. KENKEN, which is a puzzle in the Suduko/Kakuro vein, was invented by the Japanese mathematics teacher, Tetsuya Miyamoto. The rules are that each square must contain one of the integers from 1 to the grid size (in the examples below the grid sizes are 5 and 7). No number can be repeated in a row or column. The numbers in each heavily outlined set of squares, called cages, must combine (in any order) to produce the target number in the top corner using the mathematical operation indicated. A number can be repeated inside a cage as long as it is not repeated in a row or column. KENKEN appears in the New York Times and several other important pub lications including Cross Section. The puzzles here were kindly provided by Robert Fuhrer of Nextoy, LLC (and its subsidiary KenKen Puzzle, LLC). Nextoy hasmore puzzles on its website www.kenken.com.
