8th November, I960.

Mr. T.D.M. Skota,P.0. PIMVILLE,Transvaal.

Dear Mr. Skota,

I am sorry to have been so long in sending you the letter about your "Who's Who". When we discussed it you will remember that I said I wished to consult our Advertisement Manager, Mr. J. Fairbaim, before writing the letter and Mr. Fairbaim has been away.

I believe that a "Who's Who" for the African Continent such as you plan should meet a veiy real demand and if well done, as I am sure you will do it, should have a ready sale considering the very wide interest there is throughout the World in African affairs. Based on what you have told me of the sales of the previous edition, i.e. you sold between 6,000 and 7>000 copies, it should be possible to sell 10,000 copies of this new edition.

With a sale of this size, the maximum price per page for advertising would be about £50. It is very difficult to assess how many pages of advertising you will be able to sell, but if the selling is properly done throughout Africa and in overseas territories such as England, it should be possible to sell over 50 pages and possibly considerably more. We have very little knowledge of this field and I am not really in a position to say whether the 100 pages which you set as a target can be reached.

I believe, however, that any real chance of your selling a considerable quantity of advertising is based on your doing the publication in association with an established firm of Publishers.

The African Register,P.0. Box 3210 JOHANNESBURG.For attention: Mr. Robert Zwakala.

Dear Sirs,

RE: GILLETTE S.A. (PTY.) LTD.

Recently we discussed with our client the possibility of advertising in the African Register.

It is felt, however, that in view of the fact that the Register would be distributed widely over the African Continent, it would therefore cover several marketing areas covered by Gillette offices not necessarily controlled from Johannesburg.

In view of this fact our client would like you to write giving full infomation about the register so that your letter can be passed on to the London office for attention there. Will you kindly address your letter to the Managing Director, Gillette S.A. (Pty.) Ltd., P.0. Box 8l, Springs.

A SHORT MEMORANDUMON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE

SOUTHERN AFRICAN ASSOCIATION OP YOUTH CLUBS.

The Southern African Association of Youth Clubs was formed in 1937/38 as^national body, undenominational, non- political and non- racial, its aim was to promote the spiritual, educational, physical and social well -being of young people, through the provision of constructive leisure time pursuits under trained leadership in club atmosphere.

Although operating mainly at the moment in the Transvaal, the Association has links in the - E a s t e r n Cape, Natal and the Orange Free State, and as funds become available plans to develop more and more in the other provinces.

Present membership is 88 clubs, with 9,000 members; of these 62 clubs are African, 13 Coloured and 13 European. In the beginning the Association itself formed the clubs, but is now also acts as headquarters of several clubs started independently and affiliating in order to obtain the Association's services. In this way the \?ork is steadily increasing, standards are being set, and the Association has the dual task of promotion and co-ordination.

The Association works through three Sectional Committees ( African, Coloured and European respectively), under the general direction of a Joint Executive Committee. Its services are many and varied, but the most important are the provision of travelling field organisers who are experts in youth work and whose services are available to all clubs; the training and supply of leaders and helpers; camping, and other physical, recreational and sporting activities. Educational and cultural activities, such as Drama and Musical Festivals, and hobby training are also sponsored. Service to the community is emphasised, and the clubs have a praiseworthy record In this respect, e.g. interest in the Leper Hospital; building a house for a blind man and his family, etc.

The general principle has always been to encourage, train and educate the club leaders and members to take over the responsibilities for their own communities. Africans are trained to lead African, Coloureds Coloured, and Europeans European, with a gratifying response particularly in the case of the first two. The work and influence of the Association should be increased ten-fold; only lack of finance prevents it. Requests for new clubs are made daily, but have to be refused; this is particularly true in the European section, where the problem of teen-age delinquency is causing very grave anxiety. Given the money, the Association could run the clubs that would be one important step towards the prevention and cure of this serious social evil.

The Association enjoys the support of the Department of Education , Arts and Science, the Department of Coloured Affairs and the various Reef municipalities, but generous as these grants are they are not nearly sufficient for present needs, and totally inadequate for further development•

AS A l l . 9th October, 19 6 3.

Mr. T.D. Mwele Skota, Room 109, Macosa House, 17, Commissioner Street,JOHANNESBURG.

Dear Mr, Skota,This is to confirm our verbal agreement whereby we

undertake to publish your book, African W h o ’s Who. The only condition is that we must be able to secure enough advertising to justify the venture.

We will pay you, as an advance on author’s royalties, the sum of R56.10 as soon as you have agreed in writing to the terms.

These are that we will assume responsibility for securing the advertising and for all costs involved in administration and printing.' Once all costs have been met Aubrey Sussens & Associates, the publishers, and yourself, the author, will share all profits on a 50-50 basis.

You will have full access to the audited accounts. The R 56.IO which we will pay you as an advance will come off your share of the profits when these accrue.

To make sure there is no misunderstanding, I record that the book referred to as the African Who's Who is the one presently bearing the preliminary title of The African Pioneers Biographical and Classified Directory. You have handed us the manuscript of this book and it is agreed that we retain possession of it, together with all the correspondence relating to it.

By this contract you give us the sole publishing rights and vest in us the full copyright of every part of your manuscript.

The manuscript covers only the Transvaal. You have informed us that you intend writing Natal, Cape, Free State, Basutoland, Swaziland and Bechuanaland editions of the Who's Who.

4th Floor, Cape York, 252 Jeppe Street, Johannesburg.

Page 44: Telegraphic Address “Whoswho’ tEtjc African He

2/

By this contract you will give us first option to publish all the editions mentioned above. You are thus bound not to go to any other publishers until we have had an opportunity of seeing your manuscripts.

When you first approached us you had already secured a one-page advertisement from the Rand Daily Mail for R100.We have since secured a full-page advertisement from The Star. It is our intention of selling about 100 full pages at R100. We plan to hand the selling side to an approved advertisement representative at the normal rates of commission.

We are confident that we will secure enough advertising to justify the publication of the book and we look forward to a cordial relationship with yourself.

We reserve the right, with this manuscript and with any succeeding ones that we may accept from you, to have it printed at whatever printer we deem fit.

Kindest regards,Yours sincerely
