TegalisalargecityinthenorthwestpartofCentralJavaProvinceofIndonesia.ItissituatedonthenorthcoastofCentralJava,about175kilometres(109mi)fromSemarang,thecapitaloftheprovince.ItisadministrativelyseparatefromTegalRegency,whichbordersittothesouthandeast.

TheDutchEastIndiescolonialsugarindustryoriginatedinTegalandthenearbycityofPekalongan,approximately50kilometres(31mi)totheeast.TegalRegencyremainedamajorsugarproductioncenteruntilthemid20thcentury.[1]Thecityservedasaportforexportingsugarproducedonthenearbyplantations.Tegalisfamousforitswarung,commonlycalled"warteg"orwarungtegal.Itisalsoknownforitsteaproducts,suchastehbotolSosro,TongTjitea,2Tangtea,Gopekteaandotherbrands.

History

ThecityofTegaldevelopedfromasmallvillagecalledTetegual.Themodernizationofthevillagebeganintheearly1530s,anditeventuallybecamepartofthePekalonganRegency,whichadmittedtheexistenceofthePajangEmpireinCentralJava.ThePajangEmpirewasthesuccessoroftheSultanateofDemak.

ThecitywasfoundedbyKiGedeSebayu.Togetherwiththelocalpeople,heaspiredtoincreasetheregionsagriculture,exploitingitsfertilesoil.Becauseofhiseffortstodeveloptheregion,hebecamethehighleaderandthesymbolofthecity.Hiscoronationasleaderwasheldsimultaneouslywithatraditionalfestivalcelebratingarichagriculturalharvest.Inaccordancewithdistrictordinanceno.5/1988,July28istheanniversaryofthecityofTegal.

Inthe1920s,thecitywasacenterofactivismfortheCommunistPartyofIndonesia(PKI),andtheradicalleadersoftheTegalbranchofthePKIwereamongtheinstigatorsofthe1926rebellionthatledtothetemporarydestructionofthatparty.[2]

OnOctober8,1945,anantifeudalismmovementcalledGerakanTigaDaerah("ThreeRegionsMovement")wasestablishedinTegal,Pekalongan,andBrebes.Itsgoalwastoreplacethebluebloodregents(relatedtothekingsofYogyakartaandSurakarta)withordinarypeople.Accordingtotheleadersofthismovement,theoldregentshadcooperatedwiththeJapaneseduringtheworldwarIIandsentpeopletoJapaneseslavelaborcamps.ThemainleaderofGerakanTigaDaerahwasSarjiyo,whobecamethenewregentofPekalongan.OtherswereKutil,K.MijayaandIr.Sakirman.IrSakirmanwasthelocalleaderofthePKI.ThegovernmentoftheRepublicofIndonesiainYogyakartaopposedGerakanTigaDaerahanddeclareditillegal.

GerakanTigaDaerahhadtheoldregentsarrested,strippednakedanddraggedintoprison.OthergovernmentofficialsandpoliceofficerswerekidnappedandmassacredatTalangbridge.TheGerakanTigaDaerahalsostartedaracialriotagainstethnicChineseinBrebes.OnNovember4,1945,themovementattackedtheIndonesianarmyheadquartersandtheregentofficeinPekalongan.TherebelsweredefeatedbytheIndonesianarmyinafiercebattleonDecember21,1945,andmostoftheirleaderswerearrestedandimprisoned.ThisrebellioniscalledtheThreeRegionsAffair.

DuringtheunrestfollowingtheresignationofPresidentSuhartoin1998,Tegalwasthesiteofextensiveprotestsandoccasionalviolenceagainstlocalgovernmentofficials,especiallyinJune1998.
