Message From Our President Since assuming the presidency in June, I have been very busy – I feel as if I have been taking a college refresher course, Temple Beth-El 101, and as you might expect, there is a lot to learn! PROFESSIONALS: As you

know, Rabbi Michelle Goldsmith has announced that when her contract expires in June 2013, she will be leaving our pulpit. I have had many opportunities to interact with her, and I can say without hesitation that she is fully engaged in all aspects of the Temple and admirably and respectfully carrying out her rabbinic duties. Cantor Dan Gale has returned from his vacation, and his attention is now turned towards High Holiday preparations. The Cantor’s contract runs until June 2013, and a process is in place with regard to reviewing it. Bob Greenberg, our Executive Director, is in the process of completing the office staff. He is interviewing candidates for the position once held by Barb Rothman who left in May. Bob has been heavily entrenched in all aspects of the Temple, and doing his job with a smile on his face at all times. Teresa Mason, our bookkeeper, has done a yeoman’s job – our financial records needed much attention. She brings to her position all the necessary skills required to get our financial house in order. Susan Biedinger, Communications, Membership and Outreach Coordinator, does a great job overseeing a multitude of communications. RELIGIOUS SCHOOL: There is excitement in the air regarding our Religious School! Maurine Halpern has been hired and her official title is Education and Youth Administrator. She has been working very hard with the Rabbi, the Cantor, Bob Greenberg, Lisa Bor and Naomi Kipp, Board of Education Co-Chairs, and Sheri Krell with regard to the curriculum and extra-curricular events. Jennifer Spiegelman has been hired and her official title is Youth Group Coordinator; she and Maurine have some very exciting field trips planned – Ruffner Mountain, McWane Center, Botanical Gardens, to name a few. Teachers have been hired; information and registration forms have been sent to the parents. We are on our way to having an outstanding year, and kudos to all who have been involved in this area!

FINANCES: Bruce Downs, Treasurer, presented the 2012-2013 TBE budget at the June 3 Congregational Meeting. We have a membership of approximately 550 members, and of those 550 members, approximately 70% pay below our minimum dues level which is $1700. The projected amount that we hope to collect in dues is $593,000+. Two of the largest line items are Personnel - $610,910 and Administration - $140,000. With a projected budget deficit of nearly $53,000 and our Line of Credit at $600,000, there are many difficult decisions that lie ahead of us. If these numbers aren’t real eye openers, I don’t know what is! PAST PRESIDENTS, BOARD, AND COMMITTEES: The Past Presidents convened a meeting in June to which I was invited. The purpose of the meeting was to convey to me their support, their willingness to serve in whatever capacity I and the Executive Committee would like, and to offer their guidance and advice. I am very appreciative of their offer, as they represent a wealth of knowledge and experience! On July 11, we held a board meeting, and the agenda was a full one, as evidenced by the many reports that were presented. Our committee structure has been steadily growing and there is more involvement by our members than has been in a long time – Ritual, Finance, Cemetery, Board of Education, Strategic Planning, Dues Remediation, Adult Education, Family Programming, Chesed, Hospitality, House, Personnel, Chevra Kadisha, Social Action – “summertime and the living is easy” does not hold true for our committees! There are a lot of good things beginning to happen, but there are also negative issues that must and will be addressed. I know that I am in the honeymoon phase of my presidency, but I must say that I am overwhelmed by how many of you have stepped forward and said, “How can I help?” Just as we hope that the housing and economic slumps are over and on the upswing, I am hopeful that our Temple is now moving in a positive direction. If you hear a rumor or have some suggestions to make, please call me. Let’s keep pushing forward – good things will happen! Sincerely, Arlene

I am thrilled about my new position as the Education and Youth Administrator for our Religious School. I appreciate all of the supportive phone calls, emails and nice words of congratulations that many

of you have given me. I would especially like to thank a brilliant team of individuals who have worked tirelessly this summer to establish new program features and active learning opportunities that will engage our youth and build a life-long connection to Judaism: Rabbi Goldsmith, Cantor Gale, Bob Greenberg, Susan Biedinger, Naomi Kipp, Lisa Ruttenberg Bor, Sheri Krell and Jennifer Spiegelman. Our team has been able to accomplish a lot in a very short period of time and have fun while doing it. I attended the Institute of Southern Jewish Life (ISJL) curriculum conference this summer and learned an enormous amount of information that will enhance our Religious School program. In addition to implementing the ISJL curriculum for grades Pre K-10, we have added many engaging and fun learning opportunities to our school calendar. Some of those activities include: Trip to Ruffner Mountain for a Sunday morning Tefillah surrounded by nature and trees, then do our part for Tikkun Olam by performing a small service project Torah based scavenger hunt at the Birmingham Zoo Chanukah celebration with age-appropriate activities at the McWane Center Community events for Simchat Torah and Tu B’Shvat Back by popular demand- The Chocolate Seder. Yummy! Trip to Botanical Gardens with educational lessons for all grade levels Israeli Independence Day Parade: we will

celebrate in a community-wide celebration of Israel! Chocolate covered matzo school fundraiser, during Passover, with cool prizes for the top sellers Re-energized Youth Groups led by Jennifer Spiegelman Newly formed Youth Choir led by Cantor Gale I firmly believe that it takes a “village” to raise children properly and I thank each and every one of you that will be supporting our program in a number of ways (financial, in-kind donations, volunteering, etc.). I am dedicated to doing my part in this “village” by striving to make TBE’s Religious School and Youth program the best, most educational and fun program it can possibly be. With your support, our “village” will produce knowledgeable and productive students while strengthening their Jewish identity for years to come. Shalom, Maurine Halpern Education and Youth Administrator

Message From Our Foundation

B’yachad (Together)

PAGE 5 CONNECTION

The Temple and Foundation Working in Partnership Annually, the Foundation Board reviews its assets, donations and income received from investments. Based on this review and financial reports from the past 16 rolling quarters, the Foundation grants an allocation to Temple Beth-El. Temple Beth-El’s new fiscal year begins July 1, 2012. The TBE Foundation will be allocating a total of $131,000 for the 2012/2013 fiscal year. These funds will be used to augment TBE’s budget and provide enrichment opportunities to the Congregation. In addition to the allocated funds, the Foundation considers special requests from the TBE Board for special activities and as other needs arise during the year. The Foundation works as a partner with Temple Beth-El’s finance team to ensure that the current and future needs of this congregation are met. Due to the Temple repairs and the funds supplied from the Long Term Deferred Maintenance Fund, the Foundation provided approximately $500,000 of financial support to TBE during the 2011/2012 fiscal year. This new fiscal year and subsequent years will be dedicated to the rebuilding of the Long Term Deferred Maintenance Fund. The Foundation Board of Directors thanks all those who made a pledge to support the TBE’s renovation project. Their donations will help to replenish the Deferred Maintenance Fund for future building repairs. Listed below are other suggested methods for helping to rebuild this fund and leave a lasting legacy to Temple Beth-El, many of which can provide tax benefits to the donor. Please consult your tax advisor for specific advice and recommendations. Bequests: Through your will you can make a planned gift to the Temple Beth-El Foundation without impacting your finances during your lifetime. Life Insurance: Name the Temple Beth-El Foundation as beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Relatively small tax deductible annual premiums can result in a substantial gift to the Foundation. Appreciated Assets: Selling stocks, bonds, securities, or real estate that have appreciated significantly in value may trigger substantial capital gains tax. However, contributing them to the Temple Beth-El Foundation may avoid the capital gains tax, and allows an income-tax deduction. Appreciated assets can be a wise way to make charitable gifts. Retirement Assets: Retirement Plan assets can generate significant taxes, at death, and can therefore be a wonderful vehicle for chartable endowment gifts. Your tax advisor can help you determine whether you are a candidate for making a substantial retirement assets donation (pension, profit sharing, Keogh, IRA, 401(k), etc.). Uri Uri – Awake – Greet the New Dawn!

As women, we experience many wake-up calls. Devorah the Prophet was a judge in Israel when she was roused from her seat under a plam tree to lead her people’s troops into battle with the words, “Arise, arise, Devorah; arise and join in the chant”(Judges 5:12). But Devorah was also known as a mother in Israel, and, as such, she must have been responsive to the great variety of wake-up calls women experience throughout their lives: a hungry baby, a child in need, a cause that demands immediate attention and action. Being roused to action is often just the prelude to awakening others, whether via the shofar – as seen growing out of the letter ayin in the 5773 Torah Fund pin – or by using our voices and networks to focus on the critical needs of our families and communities, our movement, and our people. The imagery of dawn invokes an awareness of the challenges before us as well as our need to be alert to address them. What challenges will we face in 5773 as Jewish women? Will we rise to meet them and will the glory of G-d be present in our response? Uri, uri – awake – and shir dabeiri – sing a song – of activity, of victory, and of thanks to the Holy One whose light illuminates all of our waking moments. Our new Torah Fund pins will be in soon, and we would love to deliver a gift package which includes your pin and a few donation cards! Levels of giving are: Associate Patron - $600 (Pin has a ruby) Guardian - $300 (Pin has a pearl) Benefactor - $180 Payments can be made over twelve months. We also accept all major credit cards as well as checks. The money that we raise – this past year we raised $18,000+ - goes directly to The Jewish Theological Seminary and supports scholarships for our future rabbis, cantors, educational directors, etc. We invite you to join us! High Holiday Childcare

Temple Beth-El is pleased to offer childcare during the High Holidays, for children one-year through Pre-Kindergarten for daytime services and one-year through First Grade for evening services. The cost is $25 per child per service, with the exception of Erev Rosh Hashanah, which is $10 per child. To register for childcare, please visit our web site or contact Bob Greenberg at [email protected] for a form. Payment should be received by Tuesday, September 11th. Please contact Bob at the TBE office by the due date to confirm that your registration was received. We hire the appropriate number of childcare workers to care for those children who are pre-paid and registered, so unfortunately we cannot accept walk-ins or offer refunds. Childcare is available for the following services: Erev Rosh Hashanah, Sunday, September 16 5:45 pm—6:45 pm Rosh Hashanah-1st Day, Monday, September 17 8:15 am—1:15 pm Rosh Hashanah-2nd Day, Tuesday, September 18 8:15 am—12:30 pm Kol Nidre, Tuesday, September 25 5:30 pm—8:15 pm Yom Kippur morning, Wednesday, September 26 8:15 am—2:00 pm Yom Kippur evening, Wednesday, September 26 4:15 pm—7:45 pm

Please use the Highland Avenue entrance to our lower school wing. Plan to check on your child every hour. You must label all items belonging to your child. In keeping with our observance of the holiday, please remember not to send writing or coloring items. Snacks will be provided for children 3 and older. For children under 3, please provide kosher food. A crock pot will be available for heating bottles. Please also provide diapers, wipes, and sleeping accommodations (if needed) for your child.
