New Lidl store set to get go-aheadPLANS for a new Lidl supermarket inStratford are expected to be approved bythe district council tomorrow,Wednesday, night.

The proposal, which involves reconfiguringtwo large units on the Maybrook IndustrialEstate on Birmingham Road, one of whichwould be a 2,000sqm supermarket, have been

recommended for approval.Forty new jobs would be created by the com-

pany and the appearance of the revamped unitswill take inspiration from the Maybird Retail

Park opposite. Under the plan the size of the cur-rent Carpetright store would be reduced in orderextend the next door unit occupied by Lidl.

A large extension would also be built at therear of the Lidl unit, within the current serviceyard, to create yet more space for the super-market.

The car park will be reconfigured, increasingthe number of spaces from 146 to 155.

Six faiths on schools’ new RE syllabusSCHOOLCHILDREN will learnabout six major faiths in religiouseducation lessons in primary andsecondary schools from this month.

Warwickshire County Council hasagreed the new syllabus that aims toteach school children about Christi-anity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam,Judaism, Sikhism, as well as non-religious life stances.

Cllr Colin Hayfield, the council’sportfolio holder for education and

learning, said: “RE helps pupils tobecome literate and articulate aboutreligions and beliefs, helping youngpeople understand more about thefaith of people they meet and to bethoughtful members of society.

“This syllabus provides teacherswith new and innovative ideas toenable our children and youngpeople to access challenging andthought-provoking religious educa-tion.

“This will enable children toexplore their own beliefs, values andtraditions as well as those fromother backgrounds.”

Cllr Hayter said schools play asignificant role in supporting thecommunity cohesion agenda andpromoting British values, and thatthe new syllabus supports pupils toexplore matters of faith, non-reli-gious views, spirituality, communityand peace and reconciliation.”

Child neglect reports hitrecord high, says NSPCCREPORTS of child neglectreferred to police and socialservices in Warwickshire havereached record numbers aspeople grow more willing toraise concerns, the NSPCC hassaid.

The NSPCC Helpline passed on155 reports in 2016/17, the highestnumber ever for the area. Five yearsago, only 46 reports were referred.

There were a further 23 contactsover the past year where advice wasprovided about a child possibly facingneglect.

Nationally 16,882 referrals weremade by the NCPCC over the pastyear.

Sandra McNair, the charity’s headof service for the Midlands, said:“Neglect can have severe and long-lasting consequences for children, andcan also be an indicator of other formsof abuse. This is why it is so impor-tant for anyone suspecting a child ofbeing neglected to contact us so wecan alert the authorities to quicklystep in and help those in need.”

Golf course lodges reduced, but still on course for refusalPLANS to build 70 holiday lodges atBidford Grange Golf Club are set to beconsidered by Stratford District Counciltomorrow night, Wednesday.

The application, which is recom-mended for refusal, also includes aleisure complex, access roads andparking. The plans follow a previoussubmission to the council for 100 hol-iday lodges at the site, which was

refused last year. The new applicationhas seen this number reduced to 70,while the units have also been relocatedto be contained by the local topography.

The council has received a number ofletters both for and against the currentplan, though planning officers have rec-ommended refusal on the basis that theproject does not comply with policiescontained in the core strategy.

Town drawnat home in FACup derby tieSTRATFORD Town FC will play neighbours RedditchUnited in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.

The draw was made yesterday, Monday, at WembleyStadium, with the tie scheduled to take place at theMoodChimp Stadium on Saturday, 16th September.

The sides drew 0-0 in the league fixture on Bank Hol-iday Monday.

Stratford’s 4-0 victory over Northern Premier LeagueDivision One South side Newcastle Town in Saturday’sfirst qualifying round was the club’s first win in the cupsince beating Stafford Rangers in the second qualifyinground in 2011.

Adams was delighted to break his FA Cup duck atStratford. “It’s great to win an FA Cup at last and earnsome prize money for the club.

“I know that the financial rewards from a good cup runcan be significant and hopefully we can repeat this in thenext round.”

Stratford had to wait until three minutes before half-time to take the lead against Newcastle at the Mood-Chimp Stadium.

A long clearance downfield was headed on by MikeTaylor, allowing Luckie to race clear and slide the ballpast advancing keeper Raajan Gill.

The lead was doubled nine minutes into the second halfwhen Lee Thomas’ low cross from the left was not prop-erly cleared and Grocott rifled the loose ball into thebottom corner.

And Stratford made the game safe on 65 minutes whenLuckie surged into the penalty area where he was broughtdown by Luke Dennis and Ahenkorah blasted the spot-kick past Gill with the minimum of fuss.

Ahenkorah made it 4-0 in the last minute when he ranon to Luckie’s pass to steer the ball past Gill to completea satisfying afternoon for Adams’ men.
