The hospice will close its doors on Friday, 19th August for two weeks with special measures being put in place to ensure patient disruption is minimised. By that date patients of the greatest need, regardless of location, will be relocated to Myton Hospice in Coventry which will open up three extra beds. Others will be cared for by Myton’s At Home Service, which will be expanded with extra nurses during the closure. Ruth Freeman, Chief Executive Officer at The Myton Hospices, said: “The decision to temporarily close our site was not taken lightly but with the safety of patients, their loved ones, our staff and volunteers being our greatest concern; it really was the only option available to us. Keeping disruption to a minimum for patients is para- mount and we have given a lot of thought to how we will be able to minimise the impact of the closure.” Michelle Linnane, Director of Nursing at The Myton Hospices, added: “We understand that this unfortunate brief closure could cause our patients and loved ones con- cern but our team is devoted to ensuring that patients who are already with us are discharged appropriately and sup- ported throughout this period. I look forward to welcoming new and returning students to Evesham and Malvern Hills Colleges in September.” Asked if Warwickshire College Group would be making another bid to take over Stratford College, the Warwickshire College spokesman said: “The Coventry and Warwickshire area-based review is underway and a number of different options have been tabled by all the colleges involved. “The review will con- clude in October with rec- ommendations being published in December or January .” WARWICKSHIRE College Group and South Worcestershire College officially merged yes- terday (Monday) with the declared aim of bringing improved services to students, employers and the local community. Fordham House key worker homesare a ‘blueprint for future’ — MPSTRATFORD’S new‘key-worker’ develop-ment is the blueprint forthe future, according tothe MP for the town.

Nadhim Zahawi MP paid avisit to Fordham House, anew housing scheme by Orbit— in partnership with DeeleyConstruction, ABD Develop-ments and the Stratford TownTrust.

It is being built on the siteof a former office building onthe corner of BirminghamRoad and Clopton Road, with

close proximity to the hospitaland town centre.

The idea is for the 82 apart-ments to be offered to localkey workers, such as healthand emergency serviceworkers and teachers, as wellas local people.

There is already stronginterest in the developmentand Mr Zahawi paid tribute tothe foresight shown by theparties involved.

He said: “I believe this isthe blueprint for developmentwhen it comes to creatinghomes for those keyworkers

who can’t, ordinarily, getthemselves onto the housingladder.

“A great deal of foresighthas been shown by the part-ners who are bringing forwardFordham House and I wishthem every success.

“Stratford is not alone inneeding to provide morehomes and this type ofscheme is exactly what weneed and I can see this type ofdevelopment being rolled outacross the country.”

Peter Deeley, of bothDeeley Construction andABD Developments, saidwork was progressing well.

He said: “We do feel thatthis partnership style ofworking benefits everyoneinvolved and will deliver acrucial scheme for the town.”

Paul High, Orbit’s execu-tive director of propertyinvestment, said: “With itbeing so close to the hospital, schools, and the centre oftown, Fordham House is in aprime location for localpeople working in Stratford.”

SAFER THAN CONVENTIONAL Garage DOORSThe space saving allows you to park close to the garage door with no risk and also saves space inside the garage, giving you access to roof joists that would have otherwise been occupied by the garage doors. It also removes the danger of outward swinging garage doors striking unseen persons or objects outside.

The design of Roller Garage Doors means they are effi cient space savers; rather than swinging the door to the side or outwards in front of the garage, the garage door roller system means the doors roll directly up into a top roll system mounted above the door frame.

Campaign turns the spotlight oncareless parking in the countyCARELESS parking whichcould prevent firefighters get-ting to an emergency call outhas come under the spotlight ina new awareness campaignlaunched by Warwickshire Fireand Rescue Service.

In the last two years, firefightershave been unable to get as close asthey could to an incident on 39 sepa-rate occasions across the county.

A spokesperson for WarwickshireFire and Rescue Service said that in

Stratford the roads that repeatedlysuffered from careless parking were:Wellesbourne Grove, Shottery Road,Broad Street, Bull Street, CollegeLane, Sanctus Road, Tyler Street,John Street, Peyton Street and AlbanyRoad.

This has led to firefighters askingresidents to stop and think — would afire engine be able to drive down yourroad and get to your house quickly inan emergency?

In a bid to make people think and toencourage residents to park their vehi-

cles in the right way, WarwickshireFire and Rescue Service havelaunched a ‘Park it Right’ campaignwhich aims to highlight the potentialdangers drivers cause when theydouble park or obstruct tight corners.

The campaign warns that they notonly risk other people’s lives in anemergency, but appliances have theright to remove vehicles if it meansgetting to the fire more quickly. Thevehicle response time could alsomean the difference between crewsattending a fatality or saving a life.

Back for the second yearin a row, the week will helpWarwickshire andNorthamptonshire AirAmbulance raise its profileand funds. But it needs thepublic’s help to make it agreat success.

Pete Corbett, an airambulance volunteer, said:“Members of the public canhelp us in all sorts of ways. All we need is for people togive an hour of their time tohelp save a life. For

TO celebrate six months in theirnew home at Tyler House, Strat-ford Samaritans asked a teamtaking part in the MidlandNational Citizenship Service(NCS) Challenge to find outabout services in the area foryoung people.

The team also produced a BuzzFeed style article highlighting themost relevant services, which couldbe easily shared on social media.

Stratford Samaritans talk to hun-dreds of students in schools in the areaeach year. Their sessions, run by spe-cially-trained volunteers, are designedto improve the emotional health ofyoung people and help them todevelop the skills they need to copewith life’s challenges.

Lifespace and St Basils, two chari-ties supporting young people, arejoining Stratford Samaritans, in TylerHouse, this month.

Rachel Key, hub manager, said:“We wanted NCS to help us highlightother services available to youngpeople in Stratford.

“Our lovely team filmed interviewswith representatives from the NHS,BPAS, St Basils, the YMCA, YoungCarers, WCAVA, CAB, the police,Department of Work and Pensions,Childline and Stratford Samaritans.”

She continued: “We often assumethat young people can find informa-tion about anything they need online, but our team, aged 15 to 17, were sur-prised by just how much confidentialadvice and support is available ontheir doorstep and how many organi-

sations are here to help them.”Rachel added: “As the mentor for

the group of young people partneredup with Stratford Samaritans Commu-nity Hub, at Tyler House, it was won-derful to see the young people openup and ask questions about some verychallenging topics including abuse, bullying, self-harm and mental illness.”

A senior mentor with NCS said:“The team spent two afternoons at theHub on Thursday, 7th and Friday, 8thJuly and came back on Monday, 18thJuly to share their findings.

“They also spent Sunday, 17th July,on Bancroft Gardens distributingfliers promoting Stratford Samari-tans.”

Stratford Town Trust funded the

development of Stratford Samaritans’Community Hub, which opened inFebruary.

Tyler House has been used byyoung people since it was built in the1950s, on land left by the WilliamTyler Trust, managed by MunicipalCharities, for the benefit of the com-munity.

The article: Ten Ways Young PeopleCan Get Things Off Their Chest willbe published when the NCS volun-teers graduate at the end of thesummer onwww.tylerhousehub.org.uk

Counselling linewelcomes grant

Riding upthe total

Marathon effort raisedover £68k for charity

MORE local peoplewill learn how to avoidrape and sexual abuse, and more victims ofsuch crimes will besupported, following arecent donation fromthe WPH CharitableTrust to Warwick-based specialist charity— Safeline.

The Trust has approvedan unrestricted £4,000grant to Safeline — thethird award made to thecharity over the last threeyears — thereby allowing itto use the funds to supportthe full range of its work.

Safeline has providedsupport and counselling

services to over 3,000people during the last year. But according to Safelinechief executive, Neil Hen-derson, this is still just adrop in the ocean.

“Using official statistics,we calculate that about13,000 people in Coventryand Warwickshire are vic-tims of a sexual offenceeach year.

“That includes about2,000 men, and alsoincludes those people whochoose not to report theabuse to the police.

“This grant will allow usto continue to reach out to

all people affected by thesecrimes, via one or more ofour services: face-to-facecounselling; a range oftherapies; our trainingactivities to help more pro-fessionals help other vic-tims of these terriblecrimes; and our preventionwork in schools and youngpeople’s groups.

“We can only scratch thesurface of the problem, because our core funding islimited, so a donation ofthis size from WPH Chari-table Trust is very wel-come, as it can be usedwherever we most need it.”
