TEEN ART COOPERATIVE ARTIST: REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL BACKGROUND The Mattress Factory is a museum of contemporary art that presents art you can get into – room-sized, site-specific environments, created by in-residence artists. Located in the historic Mexican War Streets of Pittsburgh’s North Side since 1977. The Mattress Factory is one of the few museums of its kind anywhere. The museum’s programs derive from a central focus on the creative process and its mission is to (1) provide artists with an integrated residency and exhibition program, (2) educate and encourage visitors to examine the relevance of art and creativity in their own lives and (3) energize its urban neighborhood through its artistic and education programs. Education programs use installation art as a point of departure for exploring a variety of learning disciplines and resources. The museum is a national leader in developing educational programs for students with a multi-disciplinary focus, creative problem solving, observation and critical thinking, all of which are the basis of contemporary art practice. PROJECT SCOPE The Mattress Factory is seeking interesting and creative people to lead one-session workshops during the TEEN ART COOPERATIVE program. Workshops are one to two hours long between 4-6pm on Thursday afternoons and should focus on a specific idea, skill, project, or technique. They can take the form of a studio visit, skill share, performance, demonstration, discussion panel, or some other participatory event. The Teen Art Cooperative at the Mattress Factory is focused on collaboration, creative practice, and exploration. Teens are given the support and space they need to develop new ideas, experiment with materials, understand creative career paths, and collaborate with each other. We are interested in a wide range of workshop topics. What are you an expert at? What is something integral to your practice? What do you wish you had known how to do when you were a teen? Do you know how to fuse plastic? Do you run an art gallery in your garage? Do you engage with the public in a new or exciting way? Are you an expert gardener? Did you start your own business? Do you have a wild and inspiring origin story? Creative individuals from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. TIMELINE For the fall semester of workshops, proposals are accepted on a rolling basis until SEPTEMBER 13, 2019. We will accept proposals again for the spring semester due by JANUARY 3, 2020. Please try to send us proposals as soon as possible. BUDGET Compensation for a workshop is $200 and there is a small materials budget available. Workshop leaders are expected to provide a full description of their workshop, a related image, materials list and availability by MONDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2019.
