How does daylighting work?Specialized light pipes funnel natural light from large, plastic “bubbles” on the roof through highly reflective, broad pipes to the building interior. When natural light is not readily available, light sensors turn on high-efficiency fluorescent light fixtures, which use half the electricity of the more common high intensity discharge lights. The units are self-contained, require no external power, and comply with the Uniform Building Code’s AC-16 Standard for plastic skylights.

Cool RoofingTraditional dark roofs absorb UV rays from the sun, driving surface temperatures up to 160 degrees or higher on a hot day. Underneath, the building heats up, causing the cooling system to work harder and less efficiently. The use of white membranes or coatings has been proven to reduce this effect. The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) measures cool roofs on two aspects: reflectivity and emissivity. These attributes combine to form the Solar Reflective Index (SRI). Cool roofing systems have a positive effect on SRI.

TectaPerformance installs cool roofs made from a wide array of reflective materials and technologies. Cool roof membranes, coatings, and increased R-values through additional insulation all provide significant relief from overheating.

R-Value and DurabilityWith new building codes driving up the minimum R-Values across the country, it makes sense to protect your roof insulation investment from below with a vapor barrier and from above with a high strength cover board. Wet insulation, on the other hand, adds little or no R-Value and can drive valuable moisture from the inside of the building. Cover boards can protect the integrity of roof insulation and membrane from roof traffic and Mother Nature. If your insulation system is in good shape it can be used again and again, even when the membrane is ready for replacement or restoration. Also, consider utilizing lightweight insulated concrete as a cost effective means of achieving both strength and durability.
