The technology of editing
Film vs digital• There is still disagreement about what gives the best picture quality• Digital film cameras can approach the quality of a film camera but IMAX
film is regarded as the best possible quality.
Film size• There has been a array of different type of film used over the years• The wider the film in mm – the better the picture quality (resolution)
Digital Resolution• The frame is broken up into pixels, the more pixels you use, the better the
quality.
Aspect Ratio
Standard Definition vs High DefinitionEither PAL or NTSCLower quality than HD Either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratioCan be broadcast/ shown in Digital (Freesat)DV PAL is a SD format – we use it lots.
Capture Formats
Formats
The right Digital Formats• Important to use the right format to maintain quality.• Some editing systems cant accurately edit with certain formats due to
problems caused by compression
Online• Online editing uses the highest possible quality to edit. • The takes large amount of computer power and storage – when working
with very large formats (2K/4K) not a good idea.
Offline Editing• Import the footage at a lower level of quality• Create an EDL (edit decision list) using the software• Re-import the footage used in the edit at high quality ready for final
export.• Can speed up working.• Used to be used more.• Modern computers can deal with 1080p footage online. • VFX operators still use offline/ online processes.
Linear
• The film they use when filming is linear.
Non linear• No linear in digital video editing• Non liner is when you are able to make changes to recorded footage with
out any problems.• You are able to go back and change/edit the footage easily and you can
make fine adjustments to the recorded footage.• Its also when you are able to create effects to footage and digital
transitions.
Tapes vs hard discs
• Tapes are now used less when using digital video cameras to record
• Tapes have now mostly been replaces by memory cards
• It makes the process of digitalizing faster but the film/tape is less secure
