Technology – Filming and Editing

We used many pieces of technical equipment when filming our documentary, such as; Digital SLR cameras, regular stills cameras, digital video cameras, camera top lights, free standing lights, clip microphones, tripods, a tracking dolly and recording equipment.

The still image cameras and the Digital SLR’s were used to capture images while filming the documentary. The SLR’s were used to take photographs for our print advert.

The video cameras were obviously used to record our documentary, this included interviews, cutaways, montage footage, the title sequence and any other filming we needed. The cameras were high quality and produced a clear image.

The lighting equipment was a camera top light, which gave light onto a small area of the shot and large free standing light. This helped us to set the right lighting for our interviews and cutaway shots.

The clip microphone was used to collect audio from the person being interviewed. The microphone clipped to the inside of the persons top and picked up what they were saying, to give clear sound in our documentary.

The tripod allowed us to take smooth footage and gave the camera work a more professional feel. It also allowed us to position the camera correctly when shooting interviews to conform to the convention of the rule of thirds. The tracking dolly was used when filming the title sequence. The dolly allowed us to move the camera alongside people walking to give a smoother image.

The recording equipment was used to record the radio trailer, this was done in the school recording studio to give a professional finish.

The main piece of editing software we used was Adobe Premiere Pro CS6. The software allowed us to edit all of the footage we had captured. We were able to cut our footage to a fraction of a second to get just the right shot. Audio and music can be added to footage, for example in the title sequence. Footage can be moved around , sped up or slowed down. We were also able to add graphics to the image.

We also used Adobe Photoshop to edit our print advert. This software is used or picture editing. It allows you to manipulate images, add text and backgrounds. I was comfortable using Photoshop as I had used it before. I was able to resize the image, using Ctrl+T and cut out my image, using the lasso tool.

To edit the radio trailer we used Adobe Audition. This programme is used to edit audio clips. We were able to cut the clips we wanted and move them, we could also add in music.
