Introduction

This Technical Note is intended to provide a preliminary ground conditions review which aims to assess the potential for shallow groundwater flow from the Phase 1 development to the land immediately adjacent to the eastern boundary which includes a pond owned by a third party. This Technical Note should be read in conjunction with Waterman’s Technical Note (WIE14468-ES007) titled ‘Existing Pond adjacent to Sites Eastern Boundary’ which concludes that:

‘the upstream catchment for the pond is located within the land parcel to the east of the development site. Additionally the lower ground levels within the development site provide a flow route past the existing pond and are considered to convey any overland flows within the development site past the pond to the watercourse further to the north.’

Phase 1 is shown to be undeveloped farmland with the buildings of Park Fields Farm to the south of the site

from the earliest available map dated 1882 (Ref. 1) and which remain relatively unchanged to present day

confirming the greenfield nature of the site.

Discussion

Two phases of intrusive ground investigation have been completed between 2014 and 2016 and are discussed

in the following section along with publically available information for the site. A more comprehensive review

is presented in the Atkins’ Preliminary Geo-environmental Assessment (Ref.1) and Travis Baker’s Site

Investigation Report (Ref. 2).

Geo-environmental Setting

The British Geological Survey (BGS) Sheet 140, Burton-upon-Trent (Ref. 3) indicates that the site is underlain

by Superficial Deposits comprising Glacial Till and Bedrock Deposits of the Mercia Mudstone Group (MMG).

The Environment Agency groundwater vulnerability map in the Envirocheck Report classifies the underlying

Superficial Deposits of Glacial Till as a Secondary Undifferentiated Aquifer.

The Environment Agency describes a Secondary Undifferentiated Aquifer (Ref. 4) as “….assigned in cases

where it has not been possible to attribute either category A or B to a rock type. In most cases, this means that

the layer in question has previously been designated as both minor and non-aquifer in different locations due

to the variable characteristics of the rock type.

The Environment Agency classify the underlying Mercia Mudstone Group as a Secondary B Aquifer which is

described (Ref. 4) as “....predominantly lower permeability layers which may store and yield limited amounts

of groundwater due to localised features such as fissures, thin permeable horizons and weathering. These are

generally the water-bearing parts of the former non-aquifers.”

Recorded Ground Conditions

Six exploratory holes undertaken during recent ground investigation works are considered to be the most

representative of the area closest to the pond location adjacent to the eastern boundary. Two of these

exploratory holes (TP107 & SW3) were undertaken by Atkins (Ref. 1) and the remaining four (LP3-LP5 & TP2)

Page 2: Technical Note - East Staffordshire

were undertaken by Travis Baker (Ref. 2).The exploratory hole logs and corresponding location plans are

included in Appendix A and B respectively.

Superficial natural drift deposits (Glacial Till) were encountered all of the exploratory holes underlying the

Topsoil. The Superficial Deposits, where penetrated, was proven to depths of between 0.65m (LP03 – Travis

Baker) and 2m bgl (LP04 – Travis Baker).

The Superficial Deposits were noted to be variable both in terms of their composition and in thickness. The

Superficial Deposits typically comprised bands of sandy gravelly clay, clayey sand and gravel and a sand and

gravel. The cohesive materials typically were observed as soft to stiff in consistency.

Mercia Mudstone was encountered underlying the Superficial Deposits within four of the exploratory holes.

The base of the Mercia Mudstone was not proven beyond 5m bgl (LP5).

Where encountered, the Mercia Mudstone was typically encountered as a firm to stiff and very stiff red, red

brown and occasionally mottled grey. It is noted as becoming friable with depth. Some weaker horizons of

fine grained sandstone were encountered during the ground investigations and Travis Baker suggested that

these horizons were considered to represent weathered strata of the Mercia Mudstone Formation.

During excavation of the trial pits, groundwater was only identified in two exploratory holes, at 2m bgl (SW3)

and encountered in TP02 only as a slow seepage (Ref. 2). Soakaway test SW3 was undertaken wholly within

the Superficial Deposits with the results suggesting negligible infiltration potential.

Conclusions

The disparity of shallow groundwater within the exploratory holes along the eastern boundary suggests that

groundwater is present in discrete pockets and therefore unlikely to be in hydraulic continuity across the site.

Furthermore, the negligible infiltration rate recorded within SW3 confirms the predominantly cohesive nature

of shallow surface soils which is consistent with the geology recorded by the BGS. The negligible infiltration

also suggests that waterbodies in the local vicinity are likely to be in low permeable soils and fed predominantly

by overland surface water flow and precipitation. It is therefore considered unlikely that the base flow

groundwater contribution to the pond is significant to the ponds hydrology.
