Backup vs. Business ContinuityUsing RTO to Better Plan for Your Business

Page 2: TechMD - Backup vs Business Continuity

Small Businesses don't have the same ITbudgets and staff as larger enterprises.

But a data breach or compromise is just asdevastating for the smallest business as it is

for the largest.

Page 3: TechMD - Backup vs Business Continuity

In this presentation, we will look at how tocalculate Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and

Recovery Point Objective (RPO).

Page 4: TechMD - Backup vs Business Continuity

RTO and RPO

The duration of time within which a business must be estored aftera disaster or disruption to avoid unacceptable consequencesassociated with a break in business continuity.

The maximum tolerable period of time in which data might belost due to a disaster.

Recovery Time Objective:

Recovery Point Objective:

Page 5: TechMD - Backup vs Business Continuity

RTO and RPOBy calculating your desired Recovery Time Objective, youhave determined the maximum time that you can be withoutyour data before your business gets into serious trouble.

Alternatively, by specifying the Recovery Point Objective, you know how often you need to perform backups, becauseyou know how much data you can afford to lose withoutdamaging your business.

RTO and RPOAnswer the following questions:How many employees would be affected if critical data wereunavailable? What is the average wage of the affected employee (per hour)? What is the per-hour overhead cost of the affected employees? How much revenue would be lost per hour as a result of theunavailability of data?

Simply add up the average per-hour wage, the per-houroverhead, and the per-hour revenue numbers and youhave how much a data loss will cost you.
