• File• Save as- to name the document and where to save• Save- saves the changes since the last time you save• My documents- is the computers hard drive• Log in ID- your h drive is accessible anywhere in the

school district• Open- open folder on the toolbar• New- blank white page on the toolbar• Printer choice- 92p is black and white, 95p is the color• Page setup – margins, page layout• Print preview- what it will look like if you print

• General Education Requirements--these are the classes that you are required to take like English, math, speech, social science, science, foreign language

• Full-time students need 12 credits to stay on parent’s health insurance. You usually need at least 15 credits a semester to graduate on time.

• Outsourcing-businesses send jobs overseas to have them done at a lower cost or better.

• Downsizing is a planned reduction in the number of employees needed to reduce costs and be more efficient.

• Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) researches and publishes information on jobs

• The 2 major types of industry– Service industry performs a service (ex.?) – Goods industry manufactures things (ex.?)

• White collar workers deal a lot with the public and handling information (ex.?)

• Blue collar workers primarily involves use of machinery and equipment (ex.?) Blue collar are needing more training today. WHY?

Getting Paid

• Salary- You earn a set amount every week no matter how many hours you work (teachers, managers, )

• Hourly- you are paid by the hour (most jobs)• Piece Rate- you are paid based upon how much

you produce (factory, assembly, some construction jobs)

• Straight Commission- You are paid a percentage of how much you sell (many sales jobs)

• Salary + commission- is a mixture of both

Getting Paid

• Overtime- is 1 ½ times your hourly pay• hourly workers get it whenever you work more

than 40 hours a week• Salaried workers do not get overtime• Union workers may get overtime whenever they

work past their contract time• Double time- is twice your hourly pay• Some employers pay double time if you work

holidays• Union workers may get it based on their contract

stipulations

Taxes

• Used for public good (like roads, welfare, police, fire, military, education, etc.)

• Federal (10-33%) State (5%) County (6%) and City (fees and property taxes)

• Social Security also called FICA tax • FICA is 7.65%-used to pay old people pensions-

monthly check to live off of & medicare– Disability- monthly check to live off of if you can’t work– survivor benefits- monthly check until your 18 if you

lose a parent

• Sales Tax- the tax you pay when you buy something

• Here in Polk county you pay 6% (5% goes to the State/county, 1% goes to the schools)

• No sales tax on food in Iowa

• Tax free weekend in August

• Everyone needs a Checking account- they’re safe, makes bill paying easy, shows proof

• Overdrawn or bounce a check- wrote a check for more than you have in the bank

• Clearing house is the place where checks go to get separated to the correct banks

• Forgery- signing a name on a check that is not yours

• Reconciling at the end of the month you compare your checkbook with the bank statement
