NARRATIVE TEXT

ABSTRACT

This research aimed at describing teaching media used by English teacher at SMP Muhammadiyah 08 Batu in writing narrative text. Narrative text is a text which contains about story in the past. It may fiction or non-fiction story such as myth, fairytale, legend, history, fable, etc. Junior high school students learned writing narrative text by retell story. The research problems were intended to find out the kinds of teaching media used by teacher, the problems faced by teacher, and the teacher’s way to solve the problems.

This study used a descriptive qualitative research design.The subject of this study was the one of English teacher at SMP Muhammadiyah 08 Batu which was well experienced in teaching. The instruments used by researcher to collect data were observation and interview. The researcher observed in 8F class. 8F is favorite class in 8 grades students at SMP Muhammadiyah 08 Batu. The result of the study showed that English teacher at SMP Muhammadiyah 08 Batu used visual media in teaching writing narrative text, which included whiteboard, blackboard, slide projector, and picture. Unfortunately, in implementing the media, the teacher faced some problems. Those problems were: (1) in using whiteboard, the teacher faced problems such as the limitation of board marker in class. It could be solved by bringing board marker by herself as a reserve. (2) In using slide projector, the teacher faced problems due to power failure. Besides, the limitation of slide projector at that school also being a problem. The teacher has to move class which was equipped with slide projector if she wants to use it and need a long time to prepare the tool. It could be solved by preparing printed-out material as a duplicate when the electricity suddenly was off. Besides, the teacher should move by appointment and prepare the tools before starting class. (3) The teacher difficult to find appropriate picture with the story. Another problem is the unclear picture because of low resolution and low internet connection. It could be solved by looking for stories which the pictures have already provided, checking picture’s resolution before print it, using the additional speed cable to support internet connection faster. Furthermore, the teacher look for some references according to the material to make it highly varied.
