    Assistant Headteacher

    Purpose of the role (job statement)

    To assist the Governors and Headteacher in creating, establishing and delivering a vision for the school to ensurethat every child succeeds. To work under the direct instruction of teaching/senior staff, usually in the classroomwith the teacher, to support access to learning for pupils and provide general support to the teacher in themanagement of pupils and the classroom.

    Principal Responsibilities

    The person appointed, in addition to carrying out key duties particularly assigned by the Headteacher,

    Assist in the implementation of the aims and objectives of the school.

    Maintain and develop the distinct ethos and character of the school in accordance with the directionsgiven by the Governors and subject to direction given by the Headteacher.

    Be as visible and accessible as possible throughout the school day to provide encouragement and supportfor students learning and, drive an ongoing focus on the schools distinctive ethos and highexpectations.

    To work with students from a wide range of backgrounds, and with a wide range of abilities and needs,ranging from those considered to be gifted and talented, to those with a Statement of SEN as directed.

    To work under the direct instruction of teaching/senior staff, usually in the classroom with the teacher,to support access to learning for pupils and provide general support to the teacher in the management ofpupils and the classroom.

    To monitor the progress of a group/s of students you are working with as assigned by the Director ofLearning Support, tracking and communicating progress as appropriate.

    To identify potential barriers to learning and engage in strategies to overcome these barriers.

    To engage in joint target setting and action planning with staff, individuals and groups of students. To prioritise and plan your time effectively to manage the completion of these tasks via support sessions

    either within or beyond the school day.

    To spend sufficient time and energy talking through issues with students, sometimes acting as the linkbetween the student and their teacher to ensure engagement and progress takes place.

    Carry out any other duties commensurate with the grading of the post as directed by the HeadteacherThe postholder is entitled to a break of reasonable length in the course of each school day.

    Specific Responsibilities

    Support for learners:

    Assist with the development andimplementation of IEPs.

    Promote the inclusion and acceptance of allpupils within the classroom.

    Promote independence and employ strategiesto recognise and reward achievement of self-reliance.

    Provide feedback to pupils in relation toprogress and achievement.

    Attend to the pupils personal needs, andimplement related personal programmes,including social, health, and physical.

    Hygiene, first aid and welfare matters.

    Supervise and support pupils ensuring theirsafety and access to learning.

    Establish good relationships with pupils,acting as a role model and being aware of and

    Administer and assess routine tests andinvigilate exams/tests.

    Provide general clerical/admin. support e.g.administer coursework, produce worksheetsfor agreed activities etc.

    Support for the curriculum: Support pupils to understand instructions.

    Implement local and national learningstrategies e.g. literacy, numeracy, KS3, earlyyears and make effective use of opportunitiesprovided by other learning activities tosupport the development of relevant skills.

    Support the use of ICT in learning activitiesand develop pupils competence andindependence in its use.

    Help pupils to access learning activitiesthrough specialist support.

    To organise the class resources and displaysto create a stimulating environment

    Support for the school:

    Be aware of and comply with policies andprocedures relating to child protection,health, safety and security, confidentialityand data protection, reporting all concerns toan appropriate person.

    Recognise own strengths and areas ofexpertise and use these to advise and supportothers.

    Training:There is an expectation that schools willarrange for TAs to have access to a range oftraining appropriate to their role. TAs areexpected to engage in professionaldevelopment.

    Indicative qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience

    Working with or caring for children of relevant age.

    Good numeracy/literacy skills.

    Completion of Teacher Assistant Induction Programme.

    Participate in development and training opportunities.

    To have attended basic TA training at a college of further education (e.g. NCFE level 1 Training) and beworking towards NVQ2 or similar qualifications (eg CACHE level 2).

    Appropriate knowledge of safeguarding

    Use basic technology computer, video, and photocopier.

    Ability to relate well to children and adults.

    Work constructively as part of a team, understanding classroom roles and responsibilities and your ownposition within these.

    To be aware of all school policies and procedures.

    To have some knowledge of NC requirements, especially literacy, numeracy Postgraduate qualification desirable

    Appropriate first aid training desirable
