Teaching us the act of spreading knowledge.

A teaching aid is something that helps a teacher to teach it might be a reference

book.

DEFINITION

Page 3: teaching aids

4) Teaching aids are crucial for educators as they are

key in differentiating instruction for all types of

learners.

3) Because every individual learns in a different way, teachers rely on these tools to explain concepts to students with a wide variety of learning needs.

2) A teaching aid can be as simple as a chalkboard or as complex as a computer program.

1) Teaching aids are tools that classroom teachers use to help their students learn quickly and thoroughly.

TypesMost teaching aids are visual in nature. Blackboards

and whiteboards, posters, calendars, charts, drawings,

and overhead projectors are all examples of visual

teaching aids.

This type of aid is important because many people

learn best through use of visual/special thinking. Some

teaching aids are aurally-based. These aural aids

include recordings of spoken broadcasts and songs.

Audio-visual teaching aids include film projectors, videocassettes, DVDs, and movies on the Web. Though audio-visual aids were once seen as a method for students to teach themselves, they are now considered to be educational tools rather than a replacement for teachers.

Why its important??

• Teaching aids are important in how well a student can learn. Teaching aids can assist students to learn and understand material faster and better. Some of these aids consist of, audio and/or visual aids and hands on aid.

Students can become bored sitting in a

classroom for hours. Teaching aids can

provide a welcome break for students

who have been sitting for awhile and

listening to an instructor lecture in

front of the room.

Educators can use various teaching aids besides

textbooks to pique students’ interest and demonstrate

how things work.

Visual aids, such as whiteboards or chalkboards, charts,

maps, flash cards, and calendars are commonly used.

Presentation tools. such as bulletin boards, audiovisual

equipment, and overhead projectors are also utilized

frequently along with multimedia displays and

computers.

Flash cards are an effective way to teach various subjects. These

popular teaching aids are available for many fields, such as

spelling, geography, and arithmetic, and the teacher or parent

can also create customized flash cards geared toward a specific

subject or child.

Children who are visual learners will receive the most benefit

from the use of flash cards, but auditory learners will also

benefit if the information presented on the cards is read aloud.

A pointer is a teaching aid used in many classrooms. It is used

to point out items such as words written on a chalkboard or

features on a map.

The traditional pointer is a long, skinny wand. Laser pointers,

which are used to shine a beam of light on the feature the

instructor wants to highlight, are becoming more common.

The lights in laser pointers are available in different colors, and

some can even display various designs such as flowers,

butterflies, and animals.

Computers have become popular teaching aids, but overhead projectors still have a place in the classroom.

A transparency is placed on the glass and the information on the transparency is projected onto a screen. An instructor can write the information directly onto the transparency.

The transparency can also be fed into a laser printer so that information can be transferred onto the transparency from a computer.

Some teaching aids are aimed at a specific subject. For

example, driving simulators have been developed for use in

driver’s education classes.

The student sits in a module that has asteering wheel,

accelerator pedal, and brake pedal and watches a movie from

the perspective of a driver.

He or she reacts to events taking place on the screen by

pressing the accelerator or brake and turning the steering

wheel. The driving simulator records all of the students’

actions for the teacher to review with the student afterward

List of Teaching Aids

• Specific grade and subject workbooks reinforce material or skills taught in class, such as handwriting, math and science, and language arts (spelling and reading).

• Workbooks provide effective review questions and test-preparation exercises, and may feature creative activities or informative vignettes that encourage further exploration of a topic or subject area. The School Zone Publishing Company offers workbooks for pre-K to sixth-grade students.

• Membership or fee-based websites such as edHelper.com and TeAch-nology reinforce existing curriculum with printables--worksheets to download and print.

• Focusing on a particular theme or subject, printables can cover math facts, spelling exercises, mini history lessons, writing prompts, or reading and comprehension questions.

• Posters and bulletin boards generally come in sets that reinforce learning material in a way that appeals to visual learners.

• Posters can also reinforce teacher expectations and rules, particularly for pre-K to fourth-grade students, providing behavioral incentives and setting academic goals.

• For older students, bulletin boards offer constant reminders of daily lessons and facts needed for tests.

• Technology plays a big role in reinforcing classroom lessons, and engages students as they learn.

• Academic software covers all subject areas and can automatically chart students’ progress, save their data and tailor lessons to their particular level until they are ready to move on.
