2. DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE

The objective of the Teaching a Foreign language course subject is to teach and propose English language teaching methods including all the intervening factors in the English teaching-learning process in primary education. The four linguistic skills will be developed from the communicative method perspective and applied to the classroom. Students will learn to seek the necessary resources and to create materials, as well as to perform practical, motivational, and entertaining activities to teach English in a primary-education classroom.

3. SKILLS TO DEVELOP

3.1. General skills

To become acquainted with Primary Education curricular areas, the interdisciplinary relation among them, the evaluation criteria, and the teaching knowledge regarding the corresponding teaching and learning procedures. To efficiently approach language learning situations in multicultural and multilingual contexts. To promote reading and critical textual analysis of the different scientific and cultural domains in the school curriculum. To develop the necessary skills for interpersonal and intercultural communication.

3.2. Specific skills

To be proficient, in speaking and writing, in a foreign language.

- To develop and assess curriculum contents through appropriate teaching resources, and to promote the correspondent competencies in students.

- To know the cognitive, linguistic and communicative basis of the acquisition of the English language. - To be familiar with the main teaching trends in foreign language teaching in 6-12 year old students,

as well as their applications in the foreign language classroom, in the different curriculum established levels.

- To select and design appropriate teaching material, from English children’s literature and audio visual and written media.

A minimum A2 English level according to the European Common Framework for languages is recommended.

6. OBJECTIVES

To be acquainted with basic foreign language teaching concepts; to choose and develop materials for the foreign language classroom, and to apply the knowledge acquired to the teaching practice. Also, to improve students’ command of the foreign language to then teach it with excellence, and to raise the interest in being up-to-date in theories and resources regarding the teaching of a foreign language.

8. METHODOLOGY/LEARNING ACTIVITIES

The methodology is based on the communicative method in which students play an essentially active and participative role.

9. EVALUATION SYSTEM

Evaluation will be continuous. Throughout the year students will have to present in class different projects putting into practice the content learnt in class. At the end of the year, it will be compulsory to present a didactic unit in English on a particular topic. Student’s active participation in class will be considered an advantage.
