Preparing for Teacher Education
Three things to start considering and start working towards as you begin to think about teaching as a career:
1. Is teaching right for you? 2. Getting experience 3. Meeting academic requirements
1. Is Teaching Right For You?
• Talk with professionals in the field- Alumni Sharing Knowledge Program (ASK)
• Career Resource Centre Library: search online using Laurier Navigator
• Online research: The Occasional Teachers blog, Toronto Occasional Teachers (ETFO sponsored), “I am an Ontario Teacher”
2. Gaining Experience • Work or volunteer with students to find out if
teaching is the right career choice for you
• A necessary application component: many schools expect applicants to have spent many hours working with children/youth
• Characteristics of strong experiences:
– Relevant to the age group – Lesson facilitation – Diverse populations – Larger group size
3. Academic Admission Requirements • GPA: Minimum average of 70%
• Each school calculates your average in a
different way – Best 10.0 (or 15.0) full credits – Most recent 10.0 (or 15.0) full credits
Teaching Divisions
• Division requirements: – Primary/Junior (K - grade 6) – no teachables* – Junior/Intermediate (grades 4 - 10) – 1 teachable – Intermediate/Senior (grades 7 - 12) – 2 teachables
– Teachables refer to your teaching subject – Not all schools offer each division, nor all
teachables (Refer to TEAS, school websites or Becoming a Teacher in Ontario handout)
