Clinical Dilemma Case Studies Though caring, compassion, and ethical decision making are expected of the professional nurse, this emphasis is often left to

chance in the curriculum.

Clinical Dilemmas are a series of clinical reasoning case studies that emphasize the “art” of nursing. Each study has an

emphasis that integrates aspects of caring, spiritual care, nurse engagement/presence, and ethical decision making and its

relevance to nursing practice.

What’s Coming in 2018!

As a member of Think Like a Nurse, you no longer have to pay extra for additional case studies. Two

case studies will be included each month and based on the survey results that I obtained in February,

I will be developing the most requested topics of clinical reasoning case studies including:

NEW Series Coming:

• Rapid Response. Short case studies that contextualize most common complications and change of status so

students are better prepared to priority set in a crisis!

• Priority Setting Activities. Unique, practical exercise with a series of multiple patients in the ED and

med/surg floor. Based on recognizing relevant clinical data, who is the PRIORITY patient and who should the

nurse see first? This is an NCLEX emphasis and also needed for practice!

• Skill Based Case Studies. You teach the skills, I have a salient clinical scenario that contextualizes the nurse

thinking for most common skills taught including:

o Foley catheter insertion/sterile technique

o NG tube placement

o Suctioning

o Chest tubes

o Wound care

o Blood transfusion

Med Surg:

• PE/DVT

• GI bleed

• ETOH withdrawal

• Bowel obstruction/ilieus

• Pancreatitis

• Heart failure-simple

• Heart failure-ICU with bipap, hemodynamic monitoring, IV gtts

• Pneumonia/ARDS/vent management

Peds/OB:

• Congenital heart defect

• Neonatal sepsis

• Hyperbili

Mental Health:

• Substance abuse

• Dementia

• Delirium

• Anxiety/panic attack
