From the principal Hi everyone - TCS - Kind to everyone: in every way, every day!

Young Change Agents go to Melbourne After our huge three days last week, amazing news!! We have been notified that TWO teams from Trangie have been selected by the Telstra Foundation and Young Change Agents to attend the highly regarded and sought after event, Telstra Advantage in Melbourne on 5th September.

The day before the event, Telstra will fly our two teams, three students in each, down to Melbourne. There they get a chance to practise their pitches and have dinner with the team at Young Change Agents on the 4th September. The students and their teachers will stay the night in Melbourne with the other selected teams and present their pitch in front of an audience at Telstra Vantage on the 5th September. The students will get the chance to see all the exciting new technologies that are shaping the ‘revolution change’ and sit down with mentors to talk about their ideas and how to take them further. We intend to travel down to Melbourne for an extra day in order to make the most of this wonderful experience.

The students who have been selected, were chosen by the Young Change Agent team for their ideas and performance during last week’s workshops and presentations. Their success demonstrates the quality of our STEM program and how well this program develops the skills that will enable our students to be the Change Agents of the future.

To know more about Telstra Vantage™, head to: https://www.telstra.com.au/business-enterprise/events/telstra-vantage.

Thank you to the Telstra Foundation for supporting this initiative. More about the Telstra Foundation can be found at: https://exchange.telstra.com.au/telstra-news/telstra-foundation

A Culture of Caring At Trangie Central School we are proud of our strong Wellbeing Focus. Every student, every teacher, every day models and lives by the same set of values. The same message is given across the school and our school is seen as a safe and happy place for all students, regardless of who they are.

Our expectations are high and consistently applied. Even though examples of bullying at our school are rare, we believe that if such behaviour does happen it must be dealt with immediately with predictable consequences. This week we have launched a system where students have an avenue where they can report any behaviour which makes them feel unhappy.

Thanks to Mr McDonald for his work in designing the poster and referral form and also the beautiful and creative boxes for the students to make their referrals.

From the principal Thumbs Up

We Definitely Look as Good as We ARE We saw a need for new TCS Netball dresses for our senior students and after a discussion between Jess Skinner and Mel Gleeson, we got to designing a dress which aligned with Mr Jones’ design of our current rugby league, touch football and netball sports uniform.

Mark and Mel Gleeson of Mark Gleeson Constructions and Jess Skinner of Selway’s Warriors, have donated 22 new dresses to the school which our students will wear at the 24th Ronny Gibbs 7’s in Bourke on the 21st August.

Not only do they look amazing but the feedback from our students is that they feel great too. We are so grateful for such proactive and generous members of our school community. Massive THANKS!

Enrolments for Kindergarten and Year 7 2020 now being taken Early Birds runs every Wednesday morning and the students have great fun making things, learning about numbers, shapes and colours in our beautiful Cola and balancing on beams in the playground.

This week we are making frogs and having great fun learning about them and also learning to take turns and work in a team.

One of the children called Mrs Corcoran ‘Your Majesty’ this morning, so maybe that might be next week’s lesson!

CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Emma-Jean Edwards for her success in athletics last week. Emma-Jean will compete at Homebush at State level in Discus, Shot Put and she also qualified for Javelin. Well done, Emma-Jean; expert training, hard work and talent have been reflected in a huge improvement in performance resulting in these great results. Your family and your school are very proud of you and wish you good luck for the next level.

Congratulations also to Phoebe King Heterick, Christian O’Neill and K Ebsworth who are all heading to Moorambilla very shortly. I look forward to the concert that follows this in Dubbo.

Education Week On Monday I had the pleasure of attending the launch of Education Week, accompanied with representation from both secondary and primary. This was hosted in Dubbo at Dubbo College Senior Campus. I was not really sure what to expect but was absolutely amazed to see what the power and talent of Public Education can achieve. The young people who spoke or danced or sang were immensely talented and showed that money can’t buy talent but instead Public Education identifies those who demonstrate talent and then fosters and develops this ability to its fullest.

The technology that allowed the event to be shared between Dubbo and Sydney simultaneously was awesome. The Minister for Education was with us and the NSW Premier in Sydney. Both of these leaders are proud products of Public Education – Gunnedah HS and Ryde HS respectively and this is a very clear example of how it is not necessary to pay a fortune for fancy buildings in order to do well. Success comes from hard work and taking advantage of the huge number of opportunities available in Public Education that makes anything possible.

Finally …….. My door is and always has been open – whether you are happy, sad or mad. I need to know if we are not doing something right but I also need to know that you trust our motives and our intentions. I do teach, so if you need to talk to me for any reason, just call the office and arrange a time that I am not on class or in a meeting. Also, don’t forget our suggestion box at each side of the school.

Everything we do, every single day is for YOUR children. If we can do it better, tell us. Facebook is for cowards – so please tell us to our face!

SECONDARY Head Teacher’s Report Trial HSC exams

Year 12 students have now been given their Trial HSC exam timetable. Exams will be held in the mornings to ensure that students are as fresh as possible, ready to focus and demonstrate all that they know and can do in each subject. All students should be revising skills and content for each course in order to do their best.

During the exam period, whenever students are not sitting an exam, they are to attend their timetabled lessons. Teachers will be using the time for revision and exam preparation, and giving students assistance as required.

Kate Wilson Head Teacher Young Change Agents Program Last week, Trangie Central School held the Young Change Agents Program, sponsored by Telstra, for 40 students from Year 7 to 11. This program helped develop the mindset, skillset and toolset for youth to become entrepreneurs.

The students worked in teams on social, environmental and/or economic issues that were relevant to our district and community. They didn’t need to have any prior knowledge, just an interest in being involved. There were 8 teams who pitched their final idea to a judging panel of three community members after two days of preparation. The pitches were amazing and were a real credit to their teams.

The final winners were the Vege Patch Pack which consisted of a DIY greenhouse that digitally monitored soil temperature, moisture and temperature through an app. There is an opportunity for members of two groups to head to Melbourne in September to pitch their idea in front of about 5000 people at the Vantage Expo. An amazing opportunity!

SECONDARY Trangie Auscott Cotton Gin Tour Thank you to Andrew Cayzer (Trangie Caravan Park), who was courageous enough to talk to and take more than 20 students on a tour to the Trangie Auscott Cotton Gin last Thursday. Year 9/10 are studying sustainable biomes and the production of food and fibre as part of Geography this term and have learnt a lot about the production of cotton and the modifications that have been made since the 1960’s to increase the yield of this crop. Thank you also to the staff at the gin who provided the kids with take-home bags which included cotton samples and additional information, which will be very useful for students as they complete their assessment task this term!

WSSA Athletics On Friday, we had seven of our athletic superstars travel into Dubbo to compete in the WSSA Athletics trials. David and Brock represented TCS in high jump, while Kai competed in javelin. Also demonstrating their might with the javelin was Narelle (who also competed in discus) and Emma-Jean who heads off to State next month after placing 2nd in the event. Daizie soared into the top 6 for a fourth attempt in the shot put, placing 5th overall. On the day, we also had our super supporter, Sonny, who unfortunately didn’t make it in time for his event but made up for it by cheering on the other competitors!

Emma-Jean Edwards had a fantastic day at the carnival and is heading off to State WSSA in three events, two of which were new personal bests!

Susie Sarah – author talk Student reports Today in English, author Susie Sarah had come in to talk about the drought and her books. After that Susie talked about the Bunyip. Also about whale hunting; it was about the killer whale “Tom”. The session went for one hour. Personally, I enjoyed it. It was really interesting! Susie has also published over ten books! I would like to say thank you to Susie for coming out here in her own time, so thank you Susie. Luke Reynolds - Year 7

Old Tom Old Tom is a book by Susie Sarah and explains how Aboriginal people used to splash the water and sing to the whales. When Aboriginal people near Eden hunted humpback whales to feed their tribe, they cut off its lips and tongue and threw them back into the water as a gift to the killer whales who helped them. “Do you know who’s in charge?” Susie asked…Everyone thought it was Tom but it was Tom’s mother! Thank you to Susie Sarah for coming to Trangie Central School. Sienna Magill - Year 7

Assistant Principals’ Report Education Week Launch On Monday morning our School Captains, Vice Captains and Primary SRC team travelled to Dubbo to participate in the launch of Education week for this year. The event was co-hosted by Dubbo Senior College and a Primary school in Sydney. The Premier, the Minister for Education and other dignitaries were present for the event. Our students were able to share in examples of the great things happening in Public Schools across the state and they listened to the politicians speak about their visions for Education.

The theme for this year is ‘Every Student, Every Voice’ and speaks about how imperative it is that every child feels heard, seen and valued. It’s about empowering kids to seize opportunities, take risks and learn. Importantly, it also reconfirmed our strong belief that EVERY child should have access to a great quality public school, staffed by passionate teachers, funded well and with access to the best programs and learning available in our huge state. Every child deserves the chance to learn and to be empowered by a quality education.

Congratulations to our school leaders for once again displaying the behaviour and values that we expect from our students. You’re a terrific bunch!

Can you help? The Year 4/5 class are requesting that clean tin cans are brought in for school. They plan to grow Giant Russian Sunflowers for their fete stall.

Year 6 would LOVE donations of glass jars (preferably filled with goodies) for their bottle stall at the fete.

P&C are calling on volunteers to man the BBQ at the Trangie Truck and Tractor show. Please phone the school to confirm your availability.

Good Luck Athletes! We wish strength, determination, perseverance and all the luck in the world to our large team of athletes who will be heading to Dubbo next Tuesday 13th August to compete in the Gobondery/NARRAF Athletics Carnival. Children are reminded to wear their PE uniform, pack plenty of food, water and sunscreen.

The bus will leave from Trangie Central School promptly at 7:45am and from Dundas Park, Narromine at 8:15am. Book Fair & Book Parade We LOVE books at TCS and to celebrate Book Week our students will be participating in a dress up parade on Friday the 23rd August. Children are asked to come dressed as their favourite book characters. The scholastic Book Fair will be running in the Library for that entire week. Mrs Anderson will also be keeping the Library open after school for families to come and visit and purchase a new book.

Sports skills funding

Our school was successful in gaining a grant through the Sporting Schools Fund to run a series of netball lessons using the Australian netball ‘Net, Set, Go’ program. The program will run over eight weeks this term and aims to give our students fundamental skills in balance, footwork, hand eye coordination and strength/flexibility, with the end goal being that our students can enjoy a fun, yet competitive game of netball. We are pleased to have Mrs Mel Gleeson, the Development Officer for the Far West Academy of Sport, delivering the program for Netball NSW. The Far West Academy has many great sporting and educational opportunities as our students’ progress through high school.

Author visit and workshops On Wednesday our students were involved in workshops with an author of numerous children’s books, Susie Sarah. Susie worked in each class; reading her books aloud, sharing her writing process and showing us how to create illustrations that enhance the meaning of the text. Here are the highlights from some of our students…..

“It was interesting to meet an author and hear her tell us about writing books and how to publish them.” Amelia Riesterer - Year 5

“It was really funny when Susie made us write poems about poo! We had to use poo as a rhyming word.” Jack Andrews - Year 5

“Susie Sarah was definitely a confidence booster. She was very inspiring as she showed us all her books and told us how she made her story happen.” Maryley Kerr - Year 6

“It was really fun when we had to design a possum house.” Piper Mitchell - Year 5

“Susie Sarah made us write a poem about poo. She also told us a story about a big green tractor. Then she wrote her own story about it.” Shakiya Mill-Hull - Year 6

“I liked her book about the possum and the children. I liked the drawings.” Mylie Glase - Year 5

Improve your child’s Maths in 10 minutes per day! Are you looking for a quick, fun way to improve your child’s maths? Each week this term we will publish instructions for a fun card game that you can play at home with your children.

Addition snap – Addition of number facts

You need: Cards 1(ace) – 9

two players

Players divide the cards evenly. At the same time each player turns over one card. Players add the two numbers together as quickly as possible and say the answer aloud. The player who says the correct answer first, keeps the two cards. Play continues until one player collects all the cards. Jacky Murtagh Assistant Principal

Primary Interest Groups - STEM Challenge On Wednesday 31st July Primary students had a STEM Challenge where they had to construct a 3D cube. They were given playdough and matchsticks as resources and their brief was to construct a 3D cube that could stand on its own.

There were lots of discussions on how thick their playdough balls needed to be in order to carry the load. Students were given the choice to work independently or in pairs. As an extension, students were asked to add another cubic layer!

I wonder what the next challenge will be??!!
