Day 3Read the story. Answer the questions on the next page.

Weeks had already gone by, and every day it was the same thing—drills, drills, and more drills.

“I know how to do this drill already,” Jax wanted to howl out in frustration as he kicked the ball around the orange cones. Tension rose in his body with each kick.

Thankfully, Coach ended practice early. “Eat a healthy dinner and please go to bed early tonight,” he cautioned. “We have our first game of the season in the morning! We are playing the Daredevils and they won the championship last year. This won’t be an easy match to win!”

Jax and his teammates couldn’t contain their excitement that the first game was finally here. They burst out in a loud cheer, “Hoorah!”

The next morning, the team huddled together before the game kicked off.

“We’ve trained, drilled, and sweat for four straight weeks. Today, we’re going to show Coach and the Daredevils everything that we’ve learned. Remember, keep your eyes up, stay on your toes, and communicate with each other. Now, let’s go give it all we’ve got!” the captain exclaimed.

The captain kicked the ball into play, and everyone sprang to action. The ball came to Jax. He felt a little nervous at first, but then he kicked the ball with ease, just as if he was navigating the cones in the drills.

All those drills really paid off! Jax felt like screaming aloud as he swooshed the ball right into the net. “Goal!”

Day 4Read the story. Answer the questions on the following page.

Rosie looked at the damaged, destroyed playground. The plastic slide had holes in it, the ladder was broken, and the swings from the swing set were nowhere to be found. Thick caution tape wrapped the area like a big bandage.

“All of this from just one thunderstorm,” Rosie muttered to herself. She wiped a tear from her eye. “Now where am I going to play with my friends?”

Rosie shuffled her feet as she walked alongside her Aunt Aubrey on their way home. A heavy cloud of sadness hung over her. As Rosie and her aunt turned the corner toward their house, they walked under a massive lemon tree that was bursting with fruit the color of sunshine.

“Mrs. Fuentes can make gallons of lemonade with these!” Aunt Aubrey said with a big smile.

When Rosie heard the word “lemonade,” it was as if a light bulb flicked on in her head.

“I could sell lemonade and earn money to fix the playground!” Rosie burst out excitedly.

“That’s a great idea, Rosie!” Aunt Aubrey exclaimed supportively.

Mrs. Fuentes liked the idea, too, and was thrilled to give Rosie lemons for the playground.

Rosie picked the lemons, made lemonade, and set up a stand. After only a few hours, she had a jar full of money.

“I just need a few more days like this. Then I’ll have plenty of money to help rebuild the playground,” Rosie said. “This day sure did turn from sour to sweet!”

Read the paragraph below. Circle the proper nouns and underline the common nouns. Then, write up to 10 proper

nouns and up to 10 common nouns in the table below.

Saturday was one of my absolute favorite days ever. We took the train to the Lincoln Park Zoo. Mikayla,

my younger sister, got to ride the train for free because she is only three. Once we got to the zoo, we spent all day looking at

animals like lions, monkeys and iguanas. The African elephants were my absolute favorite. The baby

elephant was named Nambi. He was adorable. Well, as adorable as a 200-pound baby can be! Next week,

we will go to the Shedd Aquarium and I can’t wait to see the dolphin show!
