T he Cameron Willis Control Choke isdesigned to provide precise flowcontrol throughout its entire operat-
ing range. These chokes are available witheither plug and cage or external sleevetrim and are suitable for single or multi-phase liquid and gas service.
Typical applications include Christmastrees, line heaters, manifold, water injection and gas lift. With their linearflow characteristics, Cameron WillisControl Chokes are ideal for automatedapplications.
Additional features of the Cameron WillisControl Choke include:
• Variety of flow characteristics.
• Ability to withstand a wide range ofoperating conditions, including highsand concentrations.
• Available in manually operated oractuated models.
During service, the flow enters the choke inlet and circulates in the annulus between the body and the cage. The cage has an even distribution of ports which determine themaximum flow capacity. The high velocity jets produced by the flow (inset) collide in thecenter of the cage, dissipating the most erosive energy away from the downstream components.

SLCA Actuator
The Stepping Linear Choke Actuator(SLCA) employs two single-acting, springreturn, piston/pawl assemblies; one toopen and one to close. These pistons maybe either pneumatically or hydraulicallypowered. Actuator operation occurs byuse of pneumatic/hydraulic pressurestroking a piston/pawl assembly to engageand rotate the drive gear. The gear iskeyed to the choke’s drive bushing whichutilizes a power thread arrangement toprovide linear stem movement. If chokevibration is present, an anti-backdrivemechanism in the actuator prevents move-ment of the choke stem. Passing throughthe centerline of the actuator is a manualoverride shaft which may be operatedusing a handwheel. No special releases areneeded to operate the override, providingfor a simple and robust actuator.
The Cameron WillisControl Choke designincorporates “hydrodynamic energy dissipation” to reduce erosion problems while ensuringpositive flow control.

Plug and Cage The Plug and Cage Control Choke has a plug that throttles theflow on the inside diameter of the ported cage. This choke isused for high capacity/medium pressure drop applications. Becauseof its high capacity, the Plug and Cage Choke is useful for flowoptimization near the end of well life.
External SleeveThe External Sleeve Control Choke has a sleeve that throttles theflow on the outside diameter of the ported cage. This choke isused for low capacity/high pressure drop applications. The exter-nal sleeve is specifically designed for severely erosive service wherethe combination of high pressure drops and high sand concentra-tions can reduce the life of a choke.
C ameron Willis Control Chokes use cage-style trims that minimize erosion and noise while improving flow characteristics. This is accomplished by directing the
fluid through the cage ports so that it impinges on itself. Thedestructive energy of the fluid is dissipated and reduces wear onthe internals. Cameron Willis offers two types of trim for controlchokes, the Plug and Cage and the External Sleeve. Common features include:
• Trim has thick cross-sections of carbide that provide extensiveerosion resistance.
• Trim ports and geometry are designed to reduce wear andnoise while providing maximum control throughout the range.
• Pressure-balanced stem and thrust bearings dramatically reducetorque, thus minimizing stem loads, actuator requirements andhandwheel torque.
• Large annulus minimizes body erosion.
• Metal bonnet seal.

F or high temperature, high pressureservice in corrosive/erosive environ-ments, Cameron Willis Control
Chokes provide reliable production flow control.
The high temperature, high pressuredesign employs only metal or non-elas-tomeric resilient seals. Both varieties ofseals are Cameron designs which provideunprecedented performance and reliabilityin sour service as well as temperatures to 400°F (204°C) and pressures to 15,000 psi.
Cameron Willis Control Chokes used inseverely corrosive environments, such ashigh CO2, H2S, chlorides and high temper-atures, employ modern Corrosion
Resistant Alloys (CRA) to provide the trou-ble-free service life expected. Low alloysteel bodies are typically lined with nickelalloy 625 in an HIP or weld process. Thisprocess provides a thick, impervious layerof the CRA which is metallurgically bond-ed to the base material. The other com-ponents employ similar corrosion resistantalloys in their construction.
The HIP Clad process offers the customeran economical alternative to solid alloycomponents while still offering significantcorrosion and high temperature resistance.
Qualification TestingThe Cameron Willis External SleeveControl Choke meets or exceeds all quali-
fication testing per API 6A PR2. In addi-tion, the reverse angle stem design hasreceived extensive erosion flow loop andfire-safe testing, meeting or exceeding allindustry standards. Numerous installationsworldwide have proven the External Sleeve superior in high temperature/high pressureapplications.

Control Choke Sizing ProgramSelection of the right trim and size is vital to successful chokeoperation. Cameron offers a computer-assisted choke sizing program to optimize choke sizing and selection for the customer.Based on flow and pressure requirements of the application, theprogram analyzes and specifies the optimum choke size and trimconfiguration. Features of the Control Choke Sizing Programinclude:
• Capability to size a large number of chokes and/or flow conditions.
• Modular sizing program structure enables the addition of newchoke and choke trim data updates as needed.
• Graphics capabilities.
• Project worksheet and Cv curve printouts.
• Choke valve sizing per ANSI/ISA S75.01.
• Flow testing per ANSI/ISA S75.02.
• Noise prediction and testing per ANSI/ISA S75.07.

In addition to testing control chokes over a wide range of pressures, CameronWillis measures flow rates and noise in a flow loop per ISA specifications.
