Today's Game DJ Laing East of Scotland Cup R 1

Tayport v Linlithgow Rose II There are a number of East of Scotland Cup ties being played this afternoon, all of which, apart from this tie, are 2nd round ties. This is the competition's outstanding 1 st round tie .

Linlithgow Rose arrive at Tayport today hoping to extend a run of 8 consecutive victories. Yet, after an indifferent start to the season, a surprise 1-2 defeat at Banks o' Dee in the 1 st qualifying round of the William Hill Scottish [Senior] seemed to herald another disappointing season.

Not so. Mark Bradley , back in the managerial seat for a second time, Rose's fifth manager in three years, has put his club's start to the season behind him to steer the club to the top of the Super League on the back of the winning run.

Most recent success was at Hill of Beath last Saturday . By all accounts the 3-0 winning margin flattered the winners, as they didn't really get on top until Haws shot themselves in

the foot getting two players ordered off whilst trailing by 1-0 and playing virtually the entire second half with only nine men .

Linlithgow's three main strikers were on the mark at Keir's Park, one of whom, Tommy Coyne, found the net for a fifth successive league game. Indeed, Coyne, a prolific scorer for many seasons and joint leading scorer so far this season, is poised to enter the club's history books sometime soon as the club 's all-time scorer top scorer.

Tayport , whose record v Linlithgow was probably second to none a decade and more ago, no longer have quite the profile they enjoyed in that era.

Although there remain flaws in their performances this season, they have had their moments , the opening 25 minutes v Dalkeith last week, for example.

Linlithgow are a different kettle offish though and Tayport will have to be at their best to make round 2 and a home tie with Hill of

2

Beath Hawthorn.

Unfortunately Kieran Conway (below) remains suspended (unwarranted,

many would argue) and Martin Strachan who had an impressive first start last Saturday, misses out through being cup-tied with Scone earlier in the season. Jamie Gill could feature but it looks like the game could come a week too soon for Jamie Mackie . Marc Ogg is still out with a broken arm.

The tie will be settled on penalties if all square after 90minutes

What's the Manager saving? -the view lrom the dugout

Welcome again to the Canniepairt for our home game v high flying Linlithgow Rose, a little break from the league this week and a challenge to which we look forward.

Looking back at last week, it was quite an emotional day saying our farewells to John but my goodness, the players put every bit of that emotion into that 1st half display which was excellent. First and foremost , it was really pleasing getting a clean sheet but to see us win the game very comfortably with our strikers scoring the goals was fantastic.

We look forward to seeing you all again. Please get behind the team .

Kelty take step back to leap forward

Kelty Hearts, last season's East Region champions, made the bold decision ear

lier this year to abandon Junior Football and join the Scottish Professional Foot

ball League Pyramid. To do so, they had to start at the base of the pyramid and .____ ____ that meant joining the East of Scotland Football League. At its Super League

level, the Junior game is a cut above the EoS FL, and Kelty' s results to date have certainly confirmed that - P9 W9 F 70 A 5 Pts 27.

The EoSFL comprises 13 clubs, a drop of 4 clubs in as many seasons. The member clubs hail

from Burntisland down to Berwick, Coldstream and Gretna on the English border . To climb the

pyramid Kelty will have to win their league and then play off against the South of Scotland

League Champions to get into the Lowland League . Once in the Lowland League their aim is to

finish at the top , win a play off against the Highland League Champions and thus gain entry to

the SPFL Division 2. In theory therefore , in 2024 we could be glued to our TV screens watching

Kelty Hearts in the Champions League.

Such is the lack of media coverage of the East of Scotland Football League , certainly in these

parts , you' d be forgiven for wondering where Kelty Hearts had gone. Lack of media coverage

and participating in hugel y one-sided games for a season will soon be forgotten however when

Kelty get in amongst the big boys.

Scottish Junior Cup 3rd Round

Linlithgow look very good bets for the last 32 when they were drawn away to Oakley United in this week's 3rd round draw. Also drawn away- to Newtongrange - were our first round conquerors Cumbernauld United.

******

Linlithgow have been given the ok to continue to kick-off Saturday matches at 2.30pm throughout the winter months by playing under the Prestonfield floodlights.

******

Former Linlithgow defender and more recently Tayport's player/manager John Ovenstone was put in charge of Cowdenbeath FC on an interim basis following the dismissal last week of manager Billy Brown. Ovy and Jim Moffat, the former Tayport

goalie coach, at least saw their side score a rare goal but Montrose took the points at Central Park in a 3-1 win leaving the Blue Brazil still rooted at the foot of the table

DUNMORE REPORTS ....

A storming start to last weekend's East Premier League fixture against visiting Dalkeith saw Tayport claim a maximum three points, as the team got back to winning ways after two successive draws.

Strikers Dale Reid and Gary Sutherland netted two goals apiece in the opening twenty -five minutes and that was enough to secure the win. Conor Ireland set up the opening goal, crossing from the right for Sutherland, who took a heavy touch , but showed strength to get back onto the ball and net from ten yards out.

That counter came on ten minutes and the next came just five minutes later. Ireland was fouled inside the box and Dale Reid duly netted the spot kick .

'Port continued to push forward and made it 3-0 on 21 minutes. Tenacity from Dani Sanchez was key in the build-up and Reid raced away to tuck home his second , in fine style.

Firing on all 'cylinders , it was not long until the Canniepairt men added a fourth. Again, the hosts attacked down the right , through Reid and his low cross was slotted past the 'keeper by Sutherland.

The remainder of the game was more even. Alan Tulleth had a couple of speculative efforts for 'Port, while Dalkeith came close on occasion , notably through Paul Tansey, but there would be no further goals.

It was a fine win for Charlie King's men and the gaffer will have been pleased to see his side record a first clean sheet of the season .

The victory will have provided a boost ahead of today 's cup tie against Linlithgow Rose , but the Super League outfit are sure to provide a much tougher test. Let's hope Tayport can rise to the challenge .

CHAIRMAN'S CHAT

This afternoon we welcome Linlithgow Rose to the

Canniepairt for this East of Scotland Cup 1 st round

tie .

I must say I am very much looking forward to to

day's encounter. Of course our opponents will start

as strong favourites and rightly so as they sit top of

the Super League . As a manager I always saw

games such as this as a great challenge and opportunity to perform to the

best of your ability .

In my notes before last week ' s game against Dalkeith Thistle I said that

the best tonic the team could give everyone after the loss of John was to

have a shutout and a victory and that's what happened, with a 4-0 win.

One of the oldest sayings in the book is 'if you don't lose goals don't lose

games'. I know it ' s the most obvious of facts but I always took more satis

faction from a 1-0 victory than winning by a larger margin but losing

goals. It demonstrates strength , discipline and a strong mentality.

Today our players face a difficult task and are not expected to prevail. I

believe they can. They have nothing to lose and all to gain . Can I tempt

fate and ask for another shutout and a victory . It would provide an even

bigger tonic than last week and a great achievement.

Regards, Vevvid,
