i TONIGHT'S MATCH Tonight's league game against runners-up Downfield will be our 53rd competitive game of the season - more than any other Junior cl ub in the country certainly, and more too than most, if not all, our Senior clubs. It's asking a lot of the players to turn on the style 53 games on and the fans to turn out when folk's minds are more tuned in to Euro '96 , summer holiday s and the like.

For Downfield, tonight is the end of an era . After illustrious careers with the Spiders, the club's management team, the Grier brothers. Willie & George, have handed in their notice. This is their last game in charge. What the future holds, only George and Willie know. But if they are to stay in the game, then there is unlikely to be a shortage of offers .

The Grier brothers have played a big part in raising the profile of the Tayside Junior game and, whatever they may decide, everybody at Tayport wishes them the very best of luc k.

Until Tayport came along at the turn of the decade, the Spiders were Tayside's leading lights but to a certain extent since then, they've had to play second fiddle. Three times in five seasons Downfield have been runners-up in the championship.

One thing is certain. Downfield will be out to get a result tonight. As well as being the swan song for Willie & George, it'll likely be the last game in a Spiders' jers e y for several of their players. Kenny Jones. for example, has been placed on the transfer list.

Since our Scottish Cup success our form has been up an d down. There have been some excellent performances and some pretty mediocre ones. Only to be expected, of course, but let's hope that we can finish what has been a magnificent campaign with a display to match. The tactically astute Griers will hav e other ideas, however, so we could be in for an intriguing match.

--- -- ---------- -,

'Who 's this Hamish?' was the cry when the Eve ning Telegraph print ed a less than complimentary letter about Tayport FC and the club's achievements . There were several replies published which ripped into Hami sh and then there was a further letter, this time from 'Hamish 's wee brother' which was in a simila r vein to th e original. Hamish seems to have a chip on his shoulder about the fact that Tayport, a Fife based cl ub , play -and clean up - in the Tayside League . Is there a clue from this piece which appea'.ed_ in the match programme of another Tayside club earlier this season? " ..... . mayw tlw., v.. the. ¼JM o{, a campaign to ge,t Tayp<Yl,t tnto tMili. lac.a,/, F i/,e kague an4 ou.t o{, the. lay,:,id.e, League6! !?? ... " Food for thought.

COMMENT

Taypor t FC supporters have had a unique experience. They have witne s sed a season very few Junior Football supporters will have ever experienced in over 100 years of the game . Similarly many co mmunities never get the opportunity to enjoy the euphoria that the football team's success has brought to the town these past two month s.

Because it' s unique, it's an experience we should all savour. And. a ll you Port Supporters, take a bow . Your loyalty a nd un s t i nt i ng support for the club has been magnificent . You deserve to savour ever y minute.

We've see n an amazing number of records tumble this season . The Scottis h Cup, a sixth successive league title achieved with a record points total, a record number of goa l s scored and fewest points conceded. Perthshire Advertiser Cup, Tayside Region's Fair Play Trophy , Herschell(Charity)Trophy , Craig Stephen Trophy, Dave Reilly hitting a reco rd goals total to become Tayside's, indeed Scotland's, top goalscorer.

Joondalup City sign Tin Man

by Portile

We are now a few weeks into the pools using Australian football matches and following my recent move to Western Australia an insight into the local scene may help you win those elusive millionsl l l

The big news back in April, especially for all those who support Rangers as their second team (if you're reading this I assume the 'Port are your main team) was Joondalup City signing Ted McMinn when he received a free from Birmingham City. Rumour has it that he is on A$350 (L 175) per match . Big wages for a part time footballer in Western Australia but peanuts compared to what he must have been earning previously. No doubt there are other fringe benefits involved including the sun kissed beaches populated by scantily clad young ladies.

Big Ted made his debut for first division Joondalup on the first Saturday in April when his new team v isited second divis ion Queens Park in the preliminary round of the West Coast Cup. No the match was not at Hampden Park but at an athletics ground which had a grassy bank on either side for spectators. While there was a barrier around the pitch there was no seating (apart from the grass) and no cove r.

With in 25 minutes the Tin Man proved his worth when he was involved in all four Joondalup goals as the visitors took a commanding lead. Queens Park hit back twice before the interval , both from the penalty spot. There was no further scoring in the second half and Ted retired with half an hour remaining suffering from heat exhaustion.

What little coverage there was in the local press the next day (Aussie Rules dominates everything) mentioned a big crowdl By my counting, including the dogs, there were at the most 200 spectators at the match. At least a quarter of them were wearing Rangers jerseys and were there for only one thing.

That evening I visited the WACA (home of the Western Australian Cricket Association) to watch the West Coast Eagles entertain Brisbane Bears at Football Australian style in front of a capacity 37,000 crowd. I'm still trying to work out the rules and the score but apparently the home team lost to Brisbane for the first time in history . I wont be asked back!

Back to proper football and the start of the league season on 14th April. An early morning telephone call from some drunkard in Cobbies babbling on about some Junior team reaching the final of some cup in Scotland meant I had plenty of time to select

which match I should attend. In Western Australia there are 30 professional? teams split Into three leagues . Premier , First and Second .

Many of the Club are linked to a particular European nationality and up until last season carried names such as lnglewood Kiev , Florea! Athena, Bassendean Caledonian, Stirling Macedonia, Wanneroo British and Perth Italia . However in the recent past there have been several 'mothers of all battles' between teams in particular those linked to countries which have sub divided in Europe. As a result the league instructed all reference to nationalities/cultures to be removed from team names. The names have changed but the makeup of the teams remain unchanged!

I chose to watch Florea! with the Athena removed play lnglewood Falcons (formerly Kiev) . Both teams were tipped to be strong contenders for the Premiership title. The match was at the Lake Monger Velodrome which has a capacity of 5,000 including 2,100 seats of which 600 are covered . The uncovered seats are roped off as they are a safety hazard. As the name suggests the Velodrome is a cycle track and the pitch is squeezed into the middle .

I arrived at about 2.55pm to find a crowd of about 250 (this for the top match of the day) . Surprisingly as the match progressed the crowd decreased! Investigation revealed that each professional Club must field three teams each Saturday . The under 18s' play at 11.00am , the Reserves at 1.00pm and the First team at 3.00pm. The people leaving were those who had either watched or played in the previous matches . These matches had finished 3 • 3 (under 18s) and 3 - Oto Florea! Reserves .

An experienced lnglewood side with at least four very strong Scottish accents redressed the balance with a 3 • 1 win in the Senior match. Without doubt the very young Florea! side played better football but lnglewood with several old heads made their experience count.

As the Scottish season comes to an end with yet again Tayport canrying all before them in the Junior game the Australian soccer season is now about a quarter completed . My first impressions are that the standard, grounds and major crowds are comparable with Tayside Juniors . However it probably needs a pre-season tour by Tayport to draw real comparison . Offers of sponsorship for this tour welcome .

Where should you put your crosses on the coupon? Haven't a clue . British Football or Australian Soccer it's all a lottery .

A further piece of advice - if you meet an Australian call their national sport 'aerial ping pong' then stand well clear .

BAKER' S BIT Downfield provide our opposition tonight for this last league game of season 1995/96 . I would like to welcome their players and officials to The Canniepairt and would also like to take this opportunity to thank our fans for their magnificent support throughout this past season.

The end of tonight's encounter will close the book on a long but the most rewarding season in our short history in the Junior game . I can't heap enough praise on everyone connected with the c lub , committee, coaches, physio and most of all the players who have and will continue to strive for highei standards for themselves and each other. It's paramount in my mind that we can and will get better. It's so important for our players to keep an open mind and not just have a willingness to improve but to have a hunger for it.

The other day someone said to me ' What more have you left to achieve? You've won the Scottish Cup and you've won the Tayside 1st Division for the fifth season in a row.' My reply was that I haven't won the Scottish twice or the Tayside 1st division title 6 times in a row . That would be an even greater achievement, don't you think?

I must mention that, forby these two , we also picked up the Herschell Trophy, the P . A. Cup, the Craig Stephen Trophy for the highest goals total in the Region and, probably the most remarkable of all, the Fair Play Trophy.

I really consider this a tremendous achievement. When you think that we've been involved in almost double the number of games than some clubs in our Region, in ten Scottish Cup ties, some of which were real powder kegs, that discipline, without doubt, played a major role in bringing the Scottish Cup to this Region for the first time in 67 years.

Last Saturday saw us pick up another good 3-1 league victory away to St Josephs. And really, I don't think that they could have grumbled had the the scoreline been even wider. Another great plus for the club was the return of Harnish Mackay . He must have been pleased with his performance, as I was.

Tonight our visitors need little introduction. Downfield and ourselves have had numerous close encounters over th e pa s t five seasons and I've no reason to believe that tonight's will be any different. On a sad note it will be George & Willie Grier's last game in charge of Downfield. I'd like to take this opportunity to wish them all the best for whatever they do in the future. Unfortunately tonight I desperately want them to go out on a losing note and, if our players can produce the form of last weekend, then I'm confident we can achieve a victory .

Support the Port,

Dave Baikie.

SNIFFING ABOUT WITH THE SNOUT EX- Lochee United official Larry Duncan is back in the game. Larry has teamed up again with Alty Watson to take over the reins a t Midlands Premier Division club NCR.

CUP goal hero Stevie Ross ' fathert:ravelled all the way from Canada for the Scottish Junior Cup Final and managed to squeeze in a couple of games at the Canniepairt whilst he was here. Tonight we welcome to The Canniepairt another guest from the Dominion, Monolito Silverheels Chando B.A.,M.A.,PhD,a Canadian Indian who took in the game at Joeys last Saturday. Monolito is in this country for a while and we hope he enjoys his stay.

TAYPORT FC will be honoured next Tuesday when Dundee City Council hosts a Civic Reception in recognition of the club's achievement in winning the Scottish Cup. Fife Council have been in touch with the Club advising that they will follow suit on a convenient date in August.

THE video of the events of CupFinal Day should be available soon. Just over two hours long, the video captures the happenings in Tayport and at Fir Park from early morning until the team co mes home with the Cup. Just about everybody who was there f e atures on the video. It is hoped to have the video on sale at t he Presenta t ion Dance and thereafter at Irvine's the newsagent.

TAYPORT have been invited to play English Non-League side Ashton United from the Manchester area for The International Challenge Cup which has been put up by NYNEX Ltd. for the occasion . The game will take place at Ashton under Lyne on Saturday 3rd August .

THE Shotts Bon Accord saga rumbles on. It will be recalled that the Central League Premier team was thrown out of the SJFA for s ubmitting bogus sick lines in an attempt to avoid playing a local cuptie . For their part in the fiasco the Shotts Committee members held to be responsible were banned from all football by the SFA. However, as they had refused to demit office, the club could not get back into the Central League. An Emergency General Committee meeting of Shotts was called recently when by 54 votes t o 16 the fi've awkward committee men were turfed out leaving the u ay clear for the club to rejoin the SJFA and the Central League . It is understood that Dr.Mohammed Muqit who supplied the s i c klines has been reported to the General Medical Council by SJFA Secretary Joe Black .

IT looks as if St Josephs are~ rebuild again virtually from scratch under manager Kenny Cameron . Several players s igned during the previous regime are likely to be made available for transfer as the club prepares for the new season. Also on Joey's agenda of course is a new ground . Monyrnusk seems the be the preferred option with the currently homeless Elmwood FC taking over at Fairfield .

PROGRESS on the new enclosure ,asyou may have observed , has been slow after a brisk start but hopes are high th~t everything will be in place for the new season.
