She has been a Trustee since 1997 and has served as Secretary of the Board of Trustees since 2005. Trustee Shields was also part of the Personnel Committee. We would like to thank Diane for her many years of service and dedication to the library. Her commitment to the community has been a hallmark of her Library Trustee tenure during which the library has expanded its ability to serve patrons. She has volunteered many hours to seeing our library through many building projects. We thank her for her service and wish her the best.

Tax Time is Here…

Some time in January the library will receive a limited number of

una celebracion Cristiana de los tres Reyes Magos que visitaron al bebé Jesus.

Trustee Diane Shields is retiring from the library’s Board of Trustees. She has

been a Trustee since 1997 and has served as Secretary of the Board of

Trustees since 2005. Trustee Shields was also part of the Personnel

Committee. We would like to thank Diane for her many years of service

and dedication to the library. Her commitment to the community has

been a hallmark of her Library Trustee tenure during which the library has

Youth Events Registration begins Wednesday, December 26 th at 9:00 a.m. You can register online or in person, we do not register over the phone. To register you must have a Prairie Trails Public Library card. Your child ’s library card must be used.

An adult can register up to three children on one adult library card IN PERSON only.

Toddler Time Mondays at 10:00 a.m. Ages: 24 months - 35 months with a caregiver Limit: 15 Length: 30 minutes This interactive storytime will feature short stories, puppets, action rhymes and songs! All of these activities will help Toddlers develop language and listening skills as well as social interaction.

Preschool Storytime Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. Ages: 3 - 5 years (not yet in Kindergarten), Children attend independently Limit: 15 Length: 30 minutes In this preschool story time, children will have fun with engaging books, songs, and activities as they build their early literacy skills.

Tiny Tots Storytime Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. Ages: 6 months - 23 months with caregiver Limit: 15 Length: 30 minutes (20 minutes story time and 10 minutes optional play time) Join us for an interactive lap time, with songs, dancing, toys, and books! Along with bonding with your toddler, you will be exposed to early literacy and language skills!

Bilingual Spanish Storytime Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. Ages: 2 - 5 years with a caregiver Limit: 15 Length: 30 minutes Children will have fun with engaging books, songs, and activities that will help build early literacy skills and help them learn Spanish. Niños se divertirán con libros interesantes, canciones, y actividades que les ayudaran a fortalecer sus habilidades de lectura temprana necesarias y aprender el Español.

Registered Storytimes Registered story times start the week of January 7 th and will continue through the week of February 4th. New

storytime session will start the week of February 18th.

Drop In Storytimes Family Jam Tales (Bedtime Storytime) Every Monday at 6:30 p.m. (Except in August and December) Children of all ages and their families Length: 30 minutes No registration is required for this storytime, but space is limited. Join us for a storytime designed for the entire family. A wide variety of stories, music, and more will be shared.

Junior Achievement presents, “Our Nation” Wednesday, January 2nd at 1:00 p.m.

Grades: 3rd - 8th Limit: 40 Length: 3 hours

Snacks will be provided! Has your child explored their possible future career based on their interests and passions? Will they be prepared to

create their own opportunities as a young adult? Junior Achievement of Chicago (JA) is the leading nonprofit in financial literacy education. Our volunteer led programs foster work-readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial

literacy skills to help bridge the gap between classroom learning and future real world experiences. Junior Achievement presents, “Our Nation” an interactive hands on program with practical information that explores

the Nation’s free market system and how it serves as an economic engine for businesses and careers. After participating, your child will be able to define entrepreneurship and explore the process of innovation; understand that businesses need people with technical skills to support high-growth, high-demand jobs, compare career clusters, and

explore how the United States ties to the global economy.

Family Coloring Night Tuesday, January 8th at 6:30 p.m. Children of all ages and their families Length: 1 hour No registration is required for this event, but space is limited. Coloring is all the rage with everyone from preschoolers to grandparents. Why not share the joy of coloring with those you love the most? It’s a great way to connect with your child and share in conversation. We have simple pages for children and more complex pages for older coloring enthusiasts. Crayons and colored pencils will be provided. Bring the whole family for a fun and relaxing time! Any child age 8 and under must have caregiver present in the program room.

Robot Banks Wednesday, January 9th at 3:45 p.m. Grades: 2nd - 6th Limit: 10 Length: 45 Minutes Come paint your very own ceramic robot bank that you can take home with you when you are done!

LEGO Zone Saturday, January 12th at 11:00 a.m. Ages: 3 - 12 years Length: 45 minutes No registration is required for this event, but space is limited. Join us for fun and imaginative LEGO-building! We will provide the LEGO’s and you can bring your creative design ideas! All materials must stay at the library, but parents may bring cameras to capture the creations. Any child age 5 or under must have caregiver present in the program room.

Mom & Me Beading Time! Tuesday, January 15th at 6:30 p.m. Grades: 2nd - 6th Limit: 12 Length: 45 Min Come with your Mom to make your own pretty, personal bracelet with beads that the library will provide!

Winter Polar Bear Art Wednesday, January 16th at 6:00 p.m. Grades: 3rd - 12th Limit: 15 Length: 45 minutes Brr! Enjoy the winter season by creating your very own piece of polar bear artwork!

Discovery Club Wednesday, January 16th and 30th at 3:45 p.m. Grade: K – 2nd Limit: 15 Length: 45 minutes Do you like to learn about the world around you? Come join our club where we will explore a different theme each session through fun stories, activities, games and crafts. January themes: Winter Weather and Traditional Chinese Celebrations

Movie Screening: Incredibles 2 (rated PG) Tuesday, January 22nd from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Children of All Ages and their families Length: 118 minutes No registration is required for this event, but space is limited. Join us in watching the Pixar movie, Incredibles 2

S.T.E.A.M: Air Pressure Wednesday, January 23rd at 3:45 p.m. Grades: 1st – 5th Limit: 15 Length: 45 minutes Learn about Air Pressure with engaging experiments and demonstrations! Make your own Air Cannon to take home!

Read to Rover Tuesday, January 29th at 7:00 p.m. Grade: K - 6th Length: 1 hour Limit: 12 children (10 minute time slots) Improve your reading skills and make a new friend by reading aloud to a therapy dog. The dogs and handlers are from Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy. Children in grades K-6 can come and practice reading aloud to a licensed therapy dog and build the confidence needed to be successful readers. This program is for children who already know how to read. Please sign up in person at the Youth Services desk for a 10 minute time slot.

From Chaplin to the Dark Knight: the Movie Industry in Chicago Tuesday, January 8th at 7:00 pm Registration is required. No PTPLD card necessary. For several decades, Chicago was sporadically a featured location in popular movies, but with the success of The Blues Brothers the number of films shot on location here increased significantly. Today, Cinespace Studios on the city’s west side is the largest film studio outside of Hollywood. In this program by Dave Clark, the Windy City Road Warrior, we will look at the whole history of the film industry in Chicago, from the days of Charlie Chaplin through such modern classics as The Dark Knight.

The Beatles: Their History in One Hour Tuesday, January 22nd at 7:00 pm Registration is required. No PTPLD card necessary. The Beatles' story, their personalities, and most importantly, their music continue to influence our culture and our expectations of popular music. With the use of audio and visual content, participants will learn the arc of the Beatles' career from their development in Liverpool, through Beatlemania into their psychedelic phase and finally their dissolution. Gary Wenstrup, from College of DuPage, includes discussion of their musical and lyrical maturity and their culture impact. Questions and participation encouraged!

Happy Back Yoga Tuesday, January 22nd at 11:00 am This program is limited to 20 PTPLD participants. Patrons may register up to 2 guests. Yoga for a Happy Back Class is designed to cultivate optimal spinal health and comfort. Many of us spend our days sitting; driving, hunched over, or carrying stress in our shoulders and all of this can lead to poor spinal health and chronic back pain. This class helps alleviate back pain and other spinal issues. Alignment- Based Yoga postures are taught to create stability and space in the hips and spine, as well as relieve tension in the upper back, neck, and shoulders. All levels are welcome. You’re encouraged to bring a yoga mat; however, one will be provided for you to use during the class if needed.

Introduction to Essential Oils Thursday, January 24th at 7:00 pm Registration is required. No PTPLD card necessary. Essential Oils have become mainstream. Come learn how to choose the right oils for safety and purity with Dawn Duffy of Dawn’s Healing Hands. Learn how essential oils can help you live and play with more vitality!

Murder, Mayhem, and the Mob Tuesday, January 15th at 7:00 pm

Registration is required. No PTPLD card necessary.

Welcome Clarence Goodman to the library for a look at our town in the Roaring Twenties,

Prohibition, Al Capone, and the true story of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.

Due to the retirement of Trustee Diane Shields, the library’s Board of Trustees is required to fill the

vacant position. Therefore, residents of the Prairie Trails Public Library District are invited to submit

their name, legal address, and a statement as to why they would like to serve as a library Trustee. Any

additional information, such as a resume, letters of recommendation, etc., may be added to your

submission. Information about becoming a library Trustee is available at the library’s Circulation desk. Please submit your information by February 28th,

2019.

Coloring is a relaxing activity that adults can enjoy, too. Come join us for an evening of coloring and

conversation. We provide the coloring pages, colored pencils,

and peaceful environment. You sit back, relax, and color! Light refreshments will be served.

Wild Prairie Book Club Thursday, January 17th at 7pm

No registration required. Join us in discussing Mira T.

Lee’s Everything Here is Beautiful. Copies will be made

available at the Circulation Desk following the previous month’s

program on Thursday, December 20th, 2018.

Registration is required for the following computer classes.

Each program is limited to 10 PTPLD participants. Patrons may

Introduction to Microsoft Excel Thursday, January 10th at 7:00 pm This class will provide a basic overview of Excel. Topics include the following: functions of the program, toolbars, cells, sheets, workbooks, and more. No previous Microsoft experience is necessary.

Introduction to Computers Wednesday, January 30th at 7:00 pm The basic functions of computer hardware will be covered. We will also explore some of the essential features of Windows 10. No computer experience is necessary.
