Metaphors and Similes

• A metaphor compares two things by implying that one is something else without using like or as.

• A simile is a comparison that uses like or as.


Stage of Writing• Prewriting:

-During the prewriting stage the teacher will choose a topic for the students, and then they will brainstorm descriptions or examples using metaphors.

-During the drafting stage students will pick their four best metaphors and similes and create their definition poem. They will begin each line with the topic and the word “is.”


Practice Activity: Drafting

• As a class, students will choose the four best descriptions and metaphors they created during Prewriting.

• They will use their choices to create a draft of their definition poem on a draft sheet.


Assessment Activity: Drafting

• After students have completed their graphic organizer, they will choose the four best metaphors and descriptions, and create a draft of their definition poem on a draft sheet.
