• A metaphor compares two things by implying that one is something else without using like or as.

• A simile is a comparison that uses like or as.

Stage of Writing• Prewriting:

-During the prewriting stage the teacher will choose a topic for the students, and then they will brainstorm descriptions or examples using metaphors.

Practice Activity: Prewriting• The teacher will choose a topic and

the students will brainstorm descriptions and metaphors that describes the topic using a class graphic organizer. The graphic organizer will be on a transparency and will be displayed using an overhead projector.

-During the drafting stage students will pick their four best metaphors and similes and create their definition poem. They will begin each line with the topic and the word “is.”

• As a class, students will choose the four best descriptions and metaphors they created during Prewriting.

• They will use their choices to create a draft of their definition poem on a draft sheet.
