DKG Meeting Minutes, Tau Chapter, August 4, 2018, Lake Catholic Church, Lake of the Ozarks

The regular meeting of Tau Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma met on August 4, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Lake Ozark, Missouri. President Carol Bassett called the meeting to order. We began by inducting six new members. Tabatha Silvey, Kate Lootens, Jennifer Wrye, Misti Ma-ples, Paige Fain, and Amy Fowler joined. Welcome! Paulette Fischer then shared some highlights from the recent DKG Interna-tional Conference in Austin, Texas. She indicated that several changes were discussed but did not take place. One was to change the name to Women Educators International. This will be discussed further. Other formalities were to “induct” new members instead of “initiate”, and to pay dues in June instead

of October. This will happen next year. Recording Secretary, Robin Adams, called the roll. Minutes were approved from the April meeting as printed in the Tau Tales. Carol Bassett shared an inspirational message, and Colleen Abbott stated how much the help from our DKG chapter for the Robotics Team in Eldon was appreciated. A big thank you to all who sup-ported them! Treasurer Paulette Fischer explained the treasurer’s report, which was printed in Tau Tales and passed out at the meeting. Motion passed to approve the report. Old Business: Betty Mudd shared the Strategic Action Plan for 2018-2019 stating that our goals for this year will be to focus on increasing active membership participation and continuing to improve outreach to our members. This was voted on and approved. New Business: Gracie Fields reported on the Tau Teachers Care Project stating that 79 teachers in 13 schools will be served this school year. Jefferson City being the biggest district served. She indicated that this will be her last year to lead the project and asked for a new volunteer. She will go over details of the cur-rent project , and new ideas are welcome as well. Beth Dampf volunteered to take over beginning next year. Thank you, Beth! Each committee chair explained her committee, and current and new members broke into the one they want-ed to be a part of. Goals were discussed, and then President Carol called for a brief summary of the discus-sions: • Membership: Goals taken from Strategic Plan • Contact: Need new listing of members. Members will be contacted before meetings and number attending given to hostesses. • Communication/Publicity: OK • Historian/Tau Tales: OK • Music: OK Chairman will call on members from time to time as needed. • Recruitment Grant: Committee will make sure counselors of schools get info to students and communi-

cate timeline for scholarships. They will also check on a current list of High Schools and contacts. • Scholarships for Members: May need a “how to program” for members explaining what is available and

how to apply. • World Fellowship: OK • Courtesy: Karen Blevins encouraged members to contact her about anyone needing a card. Her commit-

tee also discussed sending a card to members who can’t attend meetings letting them know we missed them.

• Service and Program: Surveys were given out regarding projects we are doing and changes we may want to consider. This will be ongoing as we make decisions as a group.

Meeting was adjourned and after singing Table Grace: we enjoyed a taco fiesta served by the Lake hostess-es. The next meeting will be held in Tuscumbia at 10:00 on October 6, 2018. Robin Adams Secretary

Ladies, It’s time to pay dues for this fiscal year. This will be the last time we will be able to wait till October 31 to pay our annual dues. The auditors have advised International that it is not fiscally responsible to start the new fis-cal year without knowing the membership numbers, so a change was made at the International Convention in July. Starting next year, our dues must be paid before the start of the fiscal year, by June 30, 2019. There has been no change in dues. They are still: Active: $40 International, $12 State plus $1 Scholarship, $10 Chapter plus $5 chapter Recruitment Grant Total Active Dues $68.00

Several of you have already paid, but in case you haven’t, you can give me your check, made out to Tau Chapter at our October 6 meeting, or mail it to me at: Paulette Fischer 102 N Taylor California, MO 65018 I’ll be sending email reminders right after our meeting if I haven’t heard from you, and mail reminders after that, followed by phone calls if I’m still waiting to hear from you. I won’t let you slip through the cracks. If I don’t receive your dues by October 31, I have to drop you on my membership report. Tau Chapter Treasurer Paulette Fischer

TAU COMMITTEES AT WORK

My big project this summer, which is still not complete, has been to update the history and membership sections and to reorganize and add other information that would be helpful to members and perspective members. While working on our Tau Chapter website this summer, I spent quite a bit of time reorganizing our "History" page to break it into more manageable sections. I rediscovered that our chapter was formed at the Missouri State Convention in the spring of 1953. That was 65 years ago. I regret that I did-n't realize it this spring when I was still president. We could have at least sung "Happy Birthday" to Tau Chapter. How fit-ting it is to celebrate 65 years as a chapter by welcoming so

many new members as we have in 2018. I invite you to take a look at our history section and browse through some of the interesting events and accomplishments that have taken place in Tau Chapter through these past 65 years. For instance, did you know (or remember) that Tau Chapter started another chapter in Jefferson City because we were becoming so large (over 80 members). Look up 1985 for the name of that chapter and who was president at the time. Or whom did we honor as our "Lady of Distinction" in 1990 for her extremely long teaching career? Why did we name one of our Recruitment Grants in honor of Virginia Housman? When did our current president previously hold that office? It is good to take a few moments to remember our long history and the distinguished women who were/are members. Happy Belated Birthday Tau Chapter! May our chapter remain active and strong. I thought working on the history section was a big job until I started working on our member biography section. I want to thank those of you who responded with new and/or updated information. Unfortunately, I didn't hear from all of the new members, so some members have little on their bio page. However, I will always be willing to update member pages and with the new documents, it will be easy for me. In addition to the member bios, there is also a master list of members with phone numbers, emails, and addresses for quick reference on our Membership page. Other sections have been renamed "Chapter Info" and "DKG Resources". Anything pertain-ing directly to Tau Chapter is located under "Chapter Info". The Homepage has gotten long, so some items have moved to "DKG Resources". All of this is being done to make it clearer where to locate information without making each section too cumbersome. As always, if you have edits or updates for our website, please contact me. Remember, it is not helpful to have a website that is out-of-date or inaccurate. Now that I am living in Saint Joseph, I'm counting on you to help me with that.

Understanding the New Federal Education Law

The reauthorized Elementary and Secondary Education Act known a few years ago as No Child Left Behind and now called the Every Student Suc-ceeds Act (ESSA) is a reissue of the federal role in education policy. Presi-dent Obama signed it into law in December of 2015. “It is said to provide an opportunity for a public education that is focused on teaching and learning” and gives states and educators more flexibility but keeps federal funding for students who need it most . This new law includes a lot of components but here are a few main ideas. ESSA “targets resources for children in need, maintains paraprofessional certification requirements, ends adequate yearly progress requirements based on tests only, and the receipt of federal funds can no longer be condi-

tional on using test scores in teacher evaluations.” Read more about ESSA on www.ed.gov

Hello Ladies! I would like to share with you the Tau Teachers Care Project for 2018. At the beginning of August I put together 79 drinking cups for first year teach-ers. The cups held 25 yellow unsharpened pencils, a pamphlet telling about DKG, and a flyer telling about our chapter and the schools we service with this project. Then Gloria and I went on a road trip to deliver the cups to the following schools and the amount delivered to each: Jefferson City Public Schools Building in Jefferson City (46) where they will be distributed to the appropriate schools in Jefferson City, Eldon (9), Tuscumbia (6), California (4), School of the Osage (5), Latham (1), High Point (1), Eugene (2), Russellville (2), Wardsville (1), Helias (1), and St. Elizabeth (1).

I would personally like to thank Gloria Fields for her assistance in delivering all the cups. I really appreci-ate her willingness to help with this worthy project. I also would like to personally thank Beth Dampf for her willingness to take over this project and see that it continues to thrive. I am very grateful to her for her support. Last but not least a BIG THANK YOU to ALL OF YOU for the support you have given to me during the time I was in charge of this project. I truly thank each of you for helping to make this project what it is today.

TAU MEMBERS IN THE NEWS

Ashley Angle, an eleven-year Tau mem-ber, received $500.00 from the MRTA (Missouri Retired Teachers’ Association) . Ashley, a kindergarten teacher at Pioneer Trail Elementary School, was the only teacher of 24 to receive the monetary award. Ashley found out about the grant from several retired teachers from the Jefferson City Retired Teachers Association. The MRTA is divided into seven associations which Jefferson City is one. “I would be happy to help answer any questions that people have. I have pur-chased literacy items and I am going to create a written component for the store bought activities in order to record their growth.”
