1 President Nancys Message I find it hard to believe that half of my term as your president is behind us. What a busy year it has been for Tau Chapter! Weve had interesting meet- ings, hosted a great area gath- ering, gained a great new member in Amy Potts, and saw members at meetings that had been unable to attend for a while. I was privileged to rep- resent Tau Chapter at the state convention and even had breakfast with the International President! (There are perks to rooming with the Delta State Executive Secretary/ Treasurer!) I also enjoyed attending the Leadership Conference led by Jen- nifer Webb, a very energetic and entertaining DKG member from Springfield. Underneath the humor was a lot of encouragement and inspiration. One of the points Jennifer made that really stuck with me: our need to reboot and recharge our batteries, whether we are currently active edu- cators or retired ones. We need time away from the intensity of our daily routine to evaluate what weve been doing and its effectiveness and to make changes accordingly. I knew if the second half of my term was going to con- tinue to be effective, I needed to put my duties aside for a while so I could pick them up later and move forward with enthusiasm. So my husband and I took a week and traveled in our RV to Northern Illi- nois where my grandparents on my mothers side were born and raised. I enjoy genealogy and had found all I could online. I have been wanting to visit Princeton for some time, so I thoroughly enjoyed the Bureau County Ge- nealogy Library. I found some answers in the obituaries I found and other documents not available on line. What a thrill! Phil and I also entertained both sides of our family to celebrate our 70 th birthdays this year. Since our family members live at least two hours away, we decided one event in the middle of the year would work best. We had a great time, and it was so good to get everyone together. We also quietly cel- ebrated our 48 th wedding anniversary. Now its time to pick up my presidential duties and start another year. I am eager to see you at our next meeting at the Lake on August 5. Paulette Fischer will share her experiences as the Delta State Executive Secretary/ Treasurer and her recent trip to Honolulu to attend the Southwest Regional conference. Karen Blevins and Angie Wolfe are leading the hostess commit- tee. I hope you are enjoying a good summer and recharging your batteries, too. President Nancy’s Message I find it hard to believe that half of my term as your president is behind us. What a busy year it has been for Tau Chapter! We’ve had interesting meet-ings, hosted a great area gath-ering, gained a great new member in Amy Potts, and saw members at meetings that had been unable to attend for a while. I was privileged to rep-resent Tau Chapter at the state convention and even had breakfast with the International President! (There are perks to rooming with the Delta State Executive Secretary/Treasurer!) I also enjoyed attending the Leadership Conference led by Jen-nifer Webb, a very energetic and entertaining DKG member from Springfield. Underneath the humor was a lot of encouragement and inspiration. One of the points Jennifer made that really stuck with me: our need to reboot and recharge our batteries, whether we are currently active edu-cators or retired ones. We need time away from the intensity of our daily routine to evaluate what we’ve been doing and its effectiveness and to make changes accordingly. I knew if the second half of my term was going to con-tinue to be effective, I needed to put my duties aside for a while so I could pick them up later and move forward with enthusiasm. So my husband and I took a week and traveled in our RV to Northern Illi-nois where my grandparents on my mother’s side were born and raised. I enjoy genealogy and had found all I could online. I have been wanting to visit Princeton for some time, so I thoroughly enjoyed the Bureau County Ge-nealogy Library. I found some answers in the obituaries I found and other documents not available on line. What a thrill! Phil and I also entertained both sides of our family to celebrate our 70

th

birthdays this year. Since our family members live at least two hours away, we decided one event in the middle of the year would work best. We had a great time, and it was so good to get everyone together. We also quietly cel-ebrated our 48

th wedding anniversary.

Now it’s time to pick up my presidential duties and start another year. I am eager to see you at our next meeting at the Lake on August 5. Paulette Fischer will share her experiences as the Delta State Executive Secretary/Treasurer and her recent trip to Honolulu to attend the Southwest Regional conference. Karen Blevins and Angie Wolfe are leading the hostess commit-tee. I hope you are enjoying a good summer and recharging your batteries, too.

Minutes April 8, 2017 Ninth Street Christian Church, Eldon

President Nancy Lewis called to order. Members shared updates from several members and signed cards. Gloria Fields taught the Delta State song, written by Darlene Helman and adopted at the Golden Anniver-sary Convention in Columbia in 1981. Sarah Porter demonstrated how to find information on the current, proposed legislative bills affecting ed-ucation. Sarah Porter called role: 20 members were present. Members noticed that the current roster role is out-of-date, and Paulette Fischer volun-teered to help update it. Minutes from last meeting were read and ap-proved. Correspondence was presented,— a card of thanks from the Eldon School District for our contributions to the Buddy Pack Program. Paulette Fischer presented the treasurer's report, which was approved. Old business: Five Tau members will attend The Delta State Convention in Columbia on April 21-23. Convention plan-

ners have designed a pop-up museum of chapter projects: Nancy and Gracie Fields submitted the Tau

Teachers Care cup we present as to new teachers in our region.

New business:

• Nancy submitted our website to Delta State for awards. The Communications Chair responded that the

website meets all requirements for inclusion on the Delta State website. However, because we are not

certified, we are not eligible to receive awards. There is a one-time $15 fee for certification. After discus-sion, the chapter voted to pay the fee for certification. Charlotte Dudenhoeffer provided a donation to de-

fray the cost of certification.

• The Leadership Seminar will be on June 17 and it is open to everyone. The seminar will be in Jefferson

City at the Hawthorn Bank Community Room and Arlene Broeker has arranged Osage Catering for the

event. The registration link is on the website.

• The Tau Chapter Executive Committee will meet in early June to plan the second half of the biennium.

• Gracie asked for verification that we would continue with the Tau Teachers Care project, which was over-

whelmingly approved. Gracie reminded the group to bring pencil donations to the July meeting.

Celebration: • Nancy began the Celebration portion of the meeting with an inspirational message from “The Quotable

Teacher.”

• Nancy and Arlene led in honoring our Lady of Distinction, Betty Mudd. They shared highlights of her ca-

reer and life, including the most recent “petal on her rose”: Betty’s recent nomination for the Zonta Wom-

an of the Year Yellow Rose to be announced on May 15.

• Michelle Bilyeu introduced the Recruitment Grant recipients. Vada Philips from Linn will be attending Lin-

coln University in the fall: her mother and her son joined her. Hannah Ruark from Eldon will be attending

the University of Central Missouri; her mother joined her.

Announcements: Our next meeting with be on July 29, 2017, at the Lake. Paulette will share her experiences as a Delta

State Officer and what she has learned at the regional and international DKG conventions.

The meeting was adjourned. Thank you to Gracie Fields, Gloria Fields, Sara Wallis, Dana Burkle, Sharon Buster, and Alice Van Landuyt who provided the food and planned the meeting. Respectfully submitted by Sarah Porter

Executive Board Minutes June 6, 2017

New Secretary We welcome Alice Van Landuyt to the position of Secretary for the remainder of this biennium. Our Presi-dent Nancy Lewis appointed her, in accordance with our By-laws, in consultation with the Nominating Chair, Sharon Buster and the Executive Committee. We thank Sarah Porter for her service as Secretary and wish her well in her new position in Little Rock, Arkansas. Executive Committee Meeting The Executive Committee met on June 6 at Nancy Lewis' home. We reviewed meeting plans for the coming year and made a few necessary adjustments. We discussed the need to appoint a new Secretary and reviewed the suggestions from Sharon Buster. The unanimous conclu-sion was to ask Alice Van Landuyt to complete Sarah Porter's term. Lastly, we discussed the need for an ac-tion plan to increase membership. We brainstormed several ideas and decided to hold a membership orien-tation meeting for perspective members. New Member Action Plan At the June 6 Executive Committee meeting, officers discussed our serious need to recruit new members in the coming year and beyond. In 2015 and 2016, we lost six members who died and at least five who did not renew their membership. Tau Chapter will not survive at that rate of membership loss for very long. This is a concern throughout Delta State, as well as our national organization. It is time we do more than talk. Please give serious thought to bringing a colleague to our August 5th or October 21st meetings. If your invitee is not available either day, we will ask you to submit names and addresses. At the October meeting, we will formal-ly vote to invite all of these ladies to come to an information meeting about DKG and ask them to join Tau chapter. We will form a committee at the August meeting to plan the informational gathering. All that the executive committee decided was the concept which we adapted from suggestions from International. This has been a successful approach for other chapters. We are open to any and all suggestions for this meeting that we would like to take place before our February meeting. We are hopeful that we could initiate new members at the April 2018 meeting. Please think about date, place and program for this event and bring your ideas to the August 5th meeting. We will also need volunteers to serve on the planning committee.

To Endow scholarships to aid outstanding women educators in pursuing graduate study and to grant fellowships to non-member women educators.

Our August meeting will focus on Delta Kappa Gamma, our organiza-tion, and the enhancement of Tau Chapter. Paulette Fischer will in-spire us by sharing her experiences at International Convention in Ha-waii. We need to look seriously at membership, and how we can all make Tau Chapter stronger and more meaningful for all of us. Come energized, come with ideas, and come with a Tau Chapter spirit of excitement. See you on August 5th.

Ladies, it won't be long until we will need to choose a new slate of officers. The leadership positions are very important. Please consider serving and making recommendations for the next biennium.

Hello everyone! I am asking for your help again with Tau Teacher Care Project for new teachers. I would be very appreciative if eve-ryone could bring yellow number 2 unsharpened pencils to the Au-gust meeting to put in the tumblers that we give to the new teach-ers along with a brochure about DKG. I have called the school secretaries of the schools we have serviced in the past. I have been able to reach all but one and it looks like we may have around 78 new teachers. We put 24 pencils in each tumbler so if we do end up with 78 that is 1872 pencils. I am hoping that school supplies will soon be on sale. I truly appreciate all that you do to make this project a success. As we discussed at the April meeting, we would prefer plain yellow pencils without advertisements be do-nate. Thank you so much.

TTC Chair Gracie Fields

It was great that Arlene Broeker, Paulette Fischer, Nancy Lewis, Betty Mudd, Amy Potts, and Judy Stanford could attend part or all of our state convention in April. It was good to have the opportunity to meet our International President, learn more about Delta Kappa Gamma, hear inspirational/informative speakers and to see others we've met from other chapters. Tau Chapter came home with three awards: 'Highest Honors Newsletter', 'Honorable Mention Website' and 'Supporting Early-career Educators'. The Celebration of Life ceremony for members who have died was very moving. For more information about and pictures from the convention, see the Summer edition of 'Delta Grams'. MEMBER IN THE NEWS Julie Martin

“East Elementary principal [Julie Martin] retires. . .Community will remain near, dear” Julie served 24 years with the JCPS after reaching for 5 years in Vienna. She was an elementary teacher for 11 years at Thorpe Gordon Elementary and 13 years as principal at East Elementary. Julie is considering a position with DESE. “I wish for these kids that they could meet their full potential” when speaking with the reporter about what she wants for East School. “I want the kids to be as exceptional as I see them.” “Teaching is a more demanding profession every day.” Technology has been a “big” change which helps to engage the students. Asked to share advice, Julie said “’take care of yourself’—use earned sick and vacation days for the sake of physical and mental health.” She added, :make sure that you love them. ”The children never make a day boring. . .they are the“ “spice of life.” “She’ll. . .stay in touch with her colleagues, too. ‘There’s a lot of them I hired to be here.’” Enjoy your summer and new life at DESE. MEMBER IN THE NEWS Betty Mudd

Tau has recognized Betty J. Mudd as Tau’s Lady of Distinction April 2017. We were not surprised Zonta, also, recognized Betty. Betty served in the field of education for 26.5 years: 6 years teaching on the secondary level at Ashland; 20.5 years as an assistant professor at Lincoln University in the Department of Business and Economics Betty is now retired, but as an educator was active in the Missouri Business Education Association, Missouri Voca-tional Association, and Advisor of Phi Beta Lambda at Lincoln University. While serving as a teacher/educator at Lincoln, Betty worked with the Business Educators at the Department of Ele-mentary and Secondary Education to develop content for certification workshops and conducted those workshops for many years. Betty met with the Central Missouri Business Educators and, for many years, assisted with their scholarship selection. Upon her retirement from Lincoln, The Central Missouri group elected to name the scholarship for Betty. Betty is very involved in the United Way of Jefferson City and is a regular volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital. She re-ceived the 2014 Live United Award for her volunteerism at the United Way of Central Missouri office. Betty became actively involved in Tau Chapter almost from the beginning of her membership 1995. She served as president of Tau Chapter 2000-2002 and attended the state convention in 2000 with past-president Pat Buchanan. Betty also attended conventions in 2001 and 2002. She organized the Northeast Area Leadership Training workshop which was held June 20, 2008 in Jefferson City. Always willing to offer her home for meetings with officers, Betty hosted the February 2012 Tau meeting/luncheon in her home. Betty was appointed 1

st Vice President of Tau at the April 2012 meeting and attended the Delta State Convention in

Springfield that year. At that conference, Betty participated in the SAP (Strategic Action Plan) workshop then helped members develop a SAP for Tau Chapter. Ever willing to serve, Betty agreed to serve Tau as 1

st Vice President for the

2012-2014 biennium and currently serves in that office for 2016-2018. Betty and her traveling companion, Arlene, at-tended the Southwest Regional Conference in Branson in July, 2013. Betty exhibits true leadership skills in the manner by which she works with others and encourages all to be involve. Arlene Broeker
