Advise on public/private cooperation for the application of waste heat outside the Tata Steel company Info: As biggest energy consumer of the Netherlands, Tata Steel IJmuiden also has a tremendous quan tity of waste heat (flue gasses, water and material). As much as possible this is used internally. But there also remains much waste heat for which there are no projects yet with sufficient financial yield. Technically there are many options to apply the waste heat, like Organic Ranking Cycles, domestic heating. Such options don’t pass the financial yield criteria. Assigment: So the question is how to apply waste heat by means of cooperation with partners with lower financial thresholds for project selection? How should such a cooperation look like? What are the pro’s and con’s in financial and organisation point of view? Place to work: You will be working within the Energy Efficiency team of Tata Steel.

2. Establish the work on Energy Management System, i.e. developa KPI tree

Due to global warming and rising energy prices, energy efficient production is pushed tothe top of the agenda in production management. The Energy Efficiency team hasidentified and implemented several improvements with regard to energy efficiency. Butthe improvements should be maintained and secured in the production process.Therefore, it is important to embed the management of energy efficiency in theorganisation.

An energy management system (ISO 50.001 standard) facilitates the incorporation ofenergy efficiency management in the organisation. At this moment, Tata Steel is in thestart up phase for the implementation of an energy management system. Tata Steel isfacing challenges with regard to the following research directions:

How to establish an energy management system to control and maintain theimplemented improvements?• How to comply to the continuous improvement requirement of ISO 50001 and use the

existing Tata Tools for improvements.• Establish a KPI tree to identify and manage energy efficiency performance?• Design KPI’s for the shop floor for works which have a significant contribution to the

IJmuiden energy-efficiency KPI.

3. Optimise production and consumption of works arising gaseswithin safety boundaries (by means of simulation)

Tata Steel in IJmuiden produces 3 types of energy containing gasses. These are usedinside the works next to natural gas. Excess of these gasses are transported to a powerplant. To a little extend gasholder capacity is available. In emergency cases the gassesare flared.

Assigment:Develop a simulation tool for the site which should make it possible to study ways ofworking in order to maximise the result of the overall gas configuration taken intoaccount safety boundaries.

6. Advise on how to move from energy efficiency to continuousimprovement on energy consumption

Due to global warming and rising energy prices, energy efficient production is pushed tothe top of the agenda in production management. By the use of a systematic andintensive analysis method of consumed energy, the Energy Efficiency program hasidentified and implemented several improvements with regard to energy efficiencyperformance. Furthermore, an energy management system will be implemented toembed energy efficiency in the organisation with as target to maintain and improvecontinuously in energy efficiency performance. In the ideal situation, the continuousimprovement in energy consumption will be realised by the employees at the lowesthierarchical levels in the organisation. Tata Steel is interested in the required activitiesto approach the ideal situation. In other words, how can we involve the productionworkers to improve continuously on energy efficiency.
