TWENTIETH CONVOCATION OF TANUVAS

The Twentieth Convocation of TANUVAS was held at the University Centenary Auditorium, University of Madras, Chennai on 06.12.2018. Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu and Chancellor of the University Thiru. Banwarilal Purohit presided and conferred degrees and diplomas to 650 candidates in person and 256 candidates in absentia and administered the pledge to the graduands.

the present youth and requirement of relevant domain knowledge through Science and Technology synergy and inculcation of certain essential ‘employability skills’ along with the degrees, the Government of India has developed the “Innovation Policy of India” with the sole aim of generating more and more job-generators rather than job-seekers. The Government has planned programmes to strengthen the Science and Technology capabilities based on a strong and

visible “Science, Research and Innovation System for High Technology-led path for India” called SRISHTI. The results of this ‘SRISHTI’ scheme are: ‘Make in India’, ’Skill India’, ‘Digital India’, ‘Clean India’, ‘Healthy India’ etc. He added that in order to nurture ‘innovation’ in school and higher education institutions, the “Atal Innovation Mission” was launched to create an ecosystem of encouragement, mentoring, provision of support systems for entrepreneurship for the youth to experiment new ideas and build products from the school level to college and university levels in the form of ‘Atal tinkering schools’ for higher secondary schools; ‘Atal Incubation Centers’ for colleges and universities to promote ‘start-ups and incubatees” inside academic institutions.

Dr. C. Balachandran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS delivered the welcome address and presented the report on academic, research and extension achievements of the University. In his welcome address the Vice-chancellor said that TANUVAS was honored by the presence of the Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu and Chancellor of the University, an eminent educationist, a renowned social activist, institution builder,

ace orator, nationalist thinker and journalist. The Vice-Chancellor said that under the stewardship of the Hon’ble Minister for Animal Husbandry, Government of Tamil Nadu and due to his administrative acumen, the flagship scheme of the Government of Tamil Nadu, “Free distribution of milch cows, goats and sheep” is progressing by leaps and bounds. He added that under the scheme, since 2011-12, a total of 75,448 milch cows  were  provided  to  women  beneficiaries fetching 2.66 lakh litres of milk daily and a total of 1,49,426 calves worth Rs.74.71 crore were born. Further, a total of 8,72,152 poorest of the poor women were provided with 34,88,608 goats/sheep and 67.07 lakh kids/lambs worth of Rs.1,676 crores were born from the goats/sheep distributed, leading to significant economic upliftment of the rural mass.

On academic front, the Vice-Chancellor said that the University has metamorphosed into a nationally and globally recognized centre of higher  education  in  the  field  of  veterinary  and animal sciences and food sciences. He informed that TANUVAS competed with 72 SAUs and 3 deemed to be universities of ICAR and obtained a grant of Rs.28.00 crores from ICAR towards Institutional Development Plan under its flagship National Agricultural Higher Education Programme

(NAHEP) funded by the World Bank to promote any time learning, student development through inculcation of domain skills and soft skills, faculty development through national and international programmes and scores of other activities. He added that a total of 37 students from this University have cleared the prestigious ICAR-JRF examination during 2018-19.

While listing out the various schemes and accomplishments in the research front which include establishment of two research stations for conservation of Kangayam and Pulikulam breeds of cattle at Erode and Sivagangai Districts, respectively, signing of five MoUs, registration of Salem Black goat, development of highly disease resistant and adaptable local agro-climatic conditions to new crossbred pig, “TANUVAS KPM Gold”, creation of GMP facilities for Stem Cell Research and Regenerative Medicine, NABL Accreditation of TRPVB, PLAFFS and the Department of Animal Biotechnology, cGMP certification for TRPVB, whole genome sequencing of Canine Parvovirus and Feline Panleukopenia virus etc., The Vice-Chancellor expressed gratitude to the Government of Tamil Nadu for providing liberal grants towards the upliftment of farmers, landless labourers and unemployed youth and funding 8 projects to the tune of Rs. 1,582.86 lakhs, including a scheme for the establishment of Alambadi Cattle Breed Research Centre at Pennagaram in Dharmapuri District.

He proudly announced that the Bargur Cattle Research Station has been conferred with the prestigious Kamadhenu Award for conservation of native breeds by the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India. Speaking about the various extension activities and schemes that are being implemented  for  the  benefit  of  the  farmers, Dr. C. Balachandran, Vice-Chancellor said that with an ultimate focus to bring about a multi-faceted and holistic development of villages, the University has implemented the “Village Adoption Programme” and various development activities were carried out in the 31 adopted villages and highlighted the ICAR funded scheme on “Technological empowerment of tribal farmers through adoption of TANUVAS technologies in Tamil Nadu” with a budget outlay of Rs.116.04 lakhs being implemented at Nilgiris, Salem, Villupuram, Namakkal and Tiruvannamalai districts.

He said that TANUVAS has established a Section 8 company, named Veterinary Incubation Foundation@TANUVAS,  the  first  dedicated 

veterinary incubator in the country to promote and mentor start-ups in animal husbandry and allied sectors. Further, he said, to ensure the activities of the University focused towards the improvement of the livelihood of the farming community, the “TANUVAS Foundation Day-2017” was celebrated at Dindigul on the theme, “Popularizing innovative technologies of TANUVAS among livestock farmers” and more than 5,000 farmers and 500 school students visited the exhibition and about 2,000 farmers registered for the knowledge sharing sessions. He also mentioned that in the pursuit of providing skilled manpower to the animal husbandry industry, the University offers 15 skill development, 10 self-employment and  22  certificate  courses.  The  Vice-Chancellor listed out the clinical services rendered. He said that the “Animal Mobile Medical Ambulance (AMMA) for Rural Veterinary Care in Tamil Nadu” launched by the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu  has  made  significant  progress.  In  this context, the Vice-Chancellor said that a publicity documentary on “Animal Ambulance Toll free No. 1962” was prepared. The Vice-Chancellor concluded by listing the future plans focussed to get national and international acclaim.

A total of 88 medals and awards were distributed for academic excellence and performance of graduands. Selvi. P.B. Nandini received 10 medals; Selvan. T. Kavin, 9 medals and Selvi. N. Saranya, 7 medals for the best performance in the B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree programme; Selvi S. Priyanka, 3 medals for the best performance in

B.Tech (Food Technology) and Selvi. R. Pavithra, 2 medals for the best performance in B.Tech. (Poultry Production Technology). The cadets of

the NCC Unit of MVC saluted the Chancellor on arrival. The members of the Board of Management, Academic Council and Committees constituted for the conduct of Twentieth Convocation, former Vice-chancellors, University Officers and  faculty members, parents of the candidates and staff and students of TANUVAS attended the convocation.

‘GAJA’ CYCLONE RELIEF SPECIAL VETERINARY HEALTH CAMPS

TANUVAS and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services jointly conducted 57 Special Veterinary Health Camps in ‘Gaja’ cyclone affected villages of Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts during the period from 23.11.2018 to 02.12.2018. The TANUVAS AMMA Ambulance Units at Thanjavur, Tiruchirapalli and Namakkal were utilized to mobilize the sick animals which were appreciated by the team headed by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and also the team from the Government of India. The team comprising the faculty members from Veterinary Clinical Complex, Department of Veterinary Gynecology and Obstetrics and the Department of Veterinary Medicine, VC&RI, Orathanadu treated a total of 12,978 animals. Dr. S. Balasubramanian, Director of Clinics, and Dr. T. Sivakumar, Dean, VC&RI Orathanadu rendered necessary guidance.

VISIT OF HON’BLE MINISTERS

Thiru. Udumalai K. Radhakrishnan, Hon’ble Minister for Animal Husbandry and Thiru. Kadambur Raju, Hon’ble Minister for Information and Publicity, Government of Tamil Nadu visited VC&RI, Orathanadu on 22.11.2018

and reviewed about the education and infrastructure facilities. Dr. T. Sivakumar, Dean,

VC&RI, Orathanadu accompanied and explained about the activities and also damages caused by ‘Gaja’ cyclone.

CAREER ORIENTATION PROGRAMME

The Departments of Animal Husbandry Economics and Livestock Business Management, Faculty of Basic Sciences, MVC jointly organized a one day training programme on “Career Orientation” at MVC on 01.11.2018. Dr.G.Sarathchandra, Chairman and Dean, Faculty of Basic Sciences delivered the special address highlighting the various job opportunities available for the veterinarians in different fields. Lectures on different facets by the experts from the industries were arranged. A total of 73 PG students of MVC were benefitted.

NATIONAL MILK DAY CELEBRATION

CFDT, Koduveli and the Department of LPT (Dairy Science), MVC in coordination with IDA - South Zone and Tamil Nadu chapter celebrated the ‘National Milk Day’ to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurien, the “Father of White Revolution” at CFDT, Koduveli by conducting various competitions on 26.11.2018. A total of 175 students from various rural Government schools

in and around Alamathi participated. In the prize distribution function, Thiru. Pon. Senthil Kumar, Chief Editor, Pasumai Vikatan participated as the Chief Guest, distributed prizes to the winners and addressed. Dr. H. J. Sankaralinga Gowda, Executive Committee Member, IDA-South Zone & GM, Sri Krishna Milk, Karnataka was the Special Guest. Dr. D. Baskaran, Dean, CFDT, Koduveli and Dr. C. Naresh Kumar, former Professor and Head, Department of Dairy Science & Chairman, IDA – Tamil Nadu chapter felicitated. Earlier, Thiru. I.A.M. Justin, GM, Jeppiaar Milk Products Pvt. Ltd., Thiruvannamalai & Vice-Chairman, IDA–Tamil Nadu chapter welcomed the gathering and Dr.D. Ramasamy, Professor and Head, CFDT proposed the vote of thanks. The VUTRCs at Dindigul, Karur and Melmaruvathur also celebrated the ‘National Milk Day’ event by conducting competitions to the school students on 26.11.2018.

WORKSHOP

A workshop on “Awareness about plagiarism” was organized by the Department of Library Science, VC&RI, Namakkal on 09.11.2018 for the research scholars. A total of 38 research scholars registered and attended the workshop. Dr. B. Mohan, Dean, VC&RI, Namakkal awarded the certificates to the participants at the conclusion of the programme.

FARMERS TRAINING PROGRAMME

�� VUTRC, Karur conducted a Capacity Building in Adoption of Technology programme funded by NABARD on the theme “Livestock and Fish Production based Integrated Farming System” from 12.11.2018 to 14.11.2018. A total of 30 NABARD club members participated in the programme. Thiru. A. Chellakumar, Deputy Director of Fisheries (Regional), Tiruchirapalli and Thiru. M. Parameshkumar, AGM (DD), NABARD, Karur participated in the programme and interacted with the participants.

�� VUTRC, Karur in collaboration with MANAGE, Hyderabad, SAMETI, Kudumiyanmalai and Department of Agriculture, Karur District organized skill training of rural youth on

“Integrated Dairy Development” from 22.11.2018 to 29.11.2018. A total of 28 rural youth attended and benefited by the programme. Tmt. K.P. Jayanthi, Project Director (ATMA) and Joint Director of Agriculture inaugurated the programme. Tmt.R.Umarani, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Farmers Training Centre, Karur and Thiru. Kandasamy, Deputy Director of Agriculture (SS), Karur addressed and interacted with the participants.

�� VUTRC, Karur also conducted a self-employment training programme on “Poultry Farming” from 22.10.2018 to 02.11.2018 funded by Rural Self Employment Training Institute of Indian Overseas Bank, Karur. Thiru. M. Parameshkumar, AGM, NABARD, and Thiru. G. Ranganatha Prabhu, Director-RSETI participated in the inaugural function held on 22.10.2018. A total of 30 farmers of Karur district participated and benefited. 

�� Refreshment training cum input distribution programme was held at Periyakovilur village, Kollihills on 20.11.2018 under the DBT scheme on “Pig husbandry based integrated approach for empowerment of SC/ST rural women of Kollihills of Tamil Nadu”. Dr. B. Mohan, Dean,

VC&RI, Namakkal delivered presidential address and distributed piglets and inputs to the  beneficiaries.  Dr.  V.P.  Ponnuvel,  RJD(AH) delivered special address. Dr. V. Ramesh, Principal Investigator explained the scheme activities. A total of 105 women beneficiaries attended the programme.

AWARENESS PROGRAMME

�� VC&RI, Namakkal organized an awareness programme on ‘Environmental Hazards of

Plastic Pollution’ in association with Lions club of Namakkal Town on 26.11.2018 for the students and staff. As part of the programme, oratorical competition was conducted in Tamil and English. Dr. B. Mohan, Dean, VC&RI, Namakkal presided over the programme. Thiru. T. Jayamurugan, President, Tamil Nadu Science Forum, Salem District delivered a special lecture.

�� An awareness programme on “Blood Cancer and Blood Stem Cell Donation” was organised on 28.11.2018 at VC&RI, Tirunelveli jointly by the student’s Welfare Association, National Service Scheme- Red Ribbon Club and DATRI Blood Stem cell Donors Registry, Chennai. Dr.M.Thirunavukkarasu, Dean, VC&RI, Tirunelveli inaugurated the programme and delivered the presidential address. Ms. Thilagavathy, Manager, DATRI Blood Stem cell Donors Registry delivered a guest lecture on

“Blood cancer and Blood Stem Cell Donation” for the students, faculty and staff. More than 80 Students and staff of the college participated and registered their names to DATRI Blood Stem cell Donors Registry.

VIGILANCE AWARENESS WEEK CELEBRATION

VC&RI, Namakkal and Nehru Yuva Kendra, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India had jointly organised a meeting on “Awareness on vigilance and anti-corruption” on 01.11.2018 as part of vigilance awareness week. Dr. B. Mohan, Dean, VC&RI, Namakkal presided over the programme. Mr.M.Rajasekar, District Programme Co-ordinator of Bharath Yuva Sakthi Abhiyan participated and delivered lecture. Around 200 students of VC&RI, Namakkal participated  and  took  pledge  to  fight  against corruption.

TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER

The Gulabajamoon mix preparation technology developed by the Department of Livestock Products Technology - Dairy Science, VC&RI, Namakkal was transferred to Erode District Milk Producers Co-operative Union Ltd. on 29.11.2018 for mass production and marketing. PARTICIPATION IN NATIONAL LEVEL VETERINARY PHYSIOLOGY QUIZ COMPETITION-2018

The National Veterinary Physiology Quiz competition for the students of B.V.Sc., & A.H. was organized by the Society of Animal Physiologists of India (SAPI) at National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, Haryana on 27.11.2018 during the XXVII Annual Conference of SAPI with the objective to highlight the importance of physiology in veterinary profession and its latest developments to the students. Selvan, N. Pradheep, III B.V.Sc. & A.H and Selvi J. Thilahayswari, II B.V.Sc., & A.H of VC&RI, Orathanadu won the First prize “Madan Trophy for Edu Excel” at the Quiz competition. Dr. T. Sivakumar, Dean, VC&RI, Orathanadu congratulated the winners.

VICE-CHANCELLOR’S PARTICIPATION

�� Dr. C. Balachandran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS participated as the Chief Guest for the

Second Convocation of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University held at Pookode, Wayanad, Kerala on 01.11.2018 and delivered the convocation address.

�� TNAU felicitated Dr. M.S. Swaminathan on having  received  the  first  World  Agriculture Prize at a function organized at Hotel Le Royal Meridian, Chennai on 12.11.2018 in which Shri. Radha Mohan Singh, Hon’ble Union Minister for Agriculture and Family Welfare, Government of India participated as the Chief Guest and Thiru. Gagandeep Singh Bedi, I.A.S., Agricultural Production Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu as the Guest of Honour. Dr. C. Balachandran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS participated in the programme and offered his felicitations to Dr. M.S. Swaminathan.

�� In the Graduation Day of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research, Puducherry conducted on 14.11.2018, Dr.C.Balachandran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS on participated as the Chief Guest and delivered the Graduation Day Address.

�� The Fourth National Conference of Agricultural Scientific Tamil was organized  by  Tamil Nadu 

Dr. J Jayalalitha Fisheries University at the Institute of Fisheries PG Studies, Chennai on 19.11.2018 and 20.11.2018. Dr.C.Balachandran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS participated in the inaugural function and offered felicitations.

International Conference on “Agricultural Education – Sharing Global Experiences” held at New Delhi from 23.11.2018 to 25.11.2018

and presented an invited paper on “Industry – Academia Partnerships – Accelerating Innovation” highlighting the steps taken by TANUVAS in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among veterinary graduates. The presentation was well received by over 100 delegates participating in the international conference including more than 25 foreign delegates. The conference was inaugurated by Smt. Krishna Raj, Hon’ble Minister of State, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India and chaired by Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR.

Balachandran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS participated in the workshop on ‘Dairy Policy for India: Vision 2022’ chaired by the Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Government of India at NASC Complex, New Delhi on 26.11.2018. The ‘National Milk Day’ was also celebrated in which Shri. Radha Mohan Singh, Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India participated and delivered the presidential address.

�� Dr. C. Balachandran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS participated as the Guest of Honour in the 8th Congress of Asian Federation of Laboratory Animal Science Associations on “Laboratory Animal Science in India: Bridging the Gap in Asia  Pacific  Region”  held  at  Bengaluru  on 29.11.2018.
