Another ChallengingYear!

It has also been arather busy andrewarding year. Somuch has happenedand been accom-plished that it is achallenge to summa-

rize it all. Here are a few highlights of thispast year.

We completed a comprehensive replace-ment reserve study for the first time inseveral years, negotiated and implementeda new 3-year landscape maintenance con-tract, and worked with multiple pavingcontractors to obtain thorough assess-ments of the condition of our streets. Wereduced our irrigation water use by morethan 10 percent for the second year in arow, initiated a groundwater monitoring

and evaluation project in Torrey Pines, and installed and evaluated two “smart”irrigation controllers for our irrigation sys-tem. We purchased a new patrol vehicle, replaced the leaking roof on theAssociation office, and upgraded the out-dated video monitoring systems at bothentrance gates. We implemented the firstphase of our landscape master plan andreplaced the crumbling wood retainingwalls along Masters Drive and Ironshore, installed new landscaping behind the newblock walls, and installed new landscapingon the three Village Green islands. Wedeveloped and implemented a robustoperating budget for the current fiscal yearthat includes increased contributions toour replacement reserve fund withoutincreasing our maintenance assessments.

In the midst of all that, we went throughthe process of searching for, finding, andhiring a General Manager for theAssociation . . . Again! Little did I knowwhen I was asked to join the Board somefour plus years ago that I would gothrough that process three times. BettyJones told me it is definitely a record.Beth Brodie has been with us sinceFebruary and is a constant bundle of ener-gy and initiative. She is always looking for

ways to make our community brighterand more attractive, and the changes shehas implemented in our financial account-ing and records management systems havemade our office operations more efficientand accountable.

As I approach the end of another year asPresident of your Board of Directors, Imust admit it has truly been a satisfyingand enlightening year. It has been espe-cially rewarding to work with professionalssuch as Beth, John, and Pattie; my col-leagues on the Board; and the members ofthe Planning Committee. All are folkswho genuinely care about this great com-munity, and it is a privilege to know themand work with them. I look forward tothe coming year.

Please mark October 15th on your calen-dar and plan to attend the annual meetingof Tanoan residents at the TanoanCountry Club. This is our most impor-tant meeting of the year and provides anopportunity to learn more about where weare and what direction we should take tosecure our future as a community. And,you just might win one of the super doorprizes we will have that evening. I hope tosee you there.

October November

Chatty ChicksNow that summer is over, it’s time to get back together. To catch up on all the gossip and to tell interesting stories about

things that happened to us since we last met.

We had our meeting in the Tanoan office September 10th to regroup and get silly. The next meeting is October 8th at 10 am.

Don’t forget any gal, any age, living in our community is welcome! The more the merrier. There is no agenda, no purpose, noreal meeting, other than to laugh and have a good time. It’s a great way to meet people in the community other than just wav-ing at them as you walk by.

Sorry, guys, it’s girls only. You can start your own group.

Hi,Wow…it is already time for this year’sAnnual Homeowners’ Meeting. The meet-ing is on Thursday, October 15 at theTanoan Country Club. We have receivedlots of great door prizes, (see page 1) butyou have to be present to win! We look for-

ward to your attending the 2009 Annual Homeowner’s Meeting.

In accordance with the By-Laws of The Tanoan CommunityAssociation, Inc., during the August, 2009 Board Meeting, theBoard appointed its 2009 Election Committee which is PattieHinds as Chairwoman, Pamela Gooden, Betty Jones, RachelNelson and Marilyn Strauss. This year, we are filling two posi-tions on the Board of Directors. On Page 6 you will find a ballotfor our 2009 Board of Directors election and short bios of eachcandidate. Please take the time to vote! Drop off your ballot tothe Association office, the drop box, or the gatehouses. We haveplaced a ballot box in the Association office and we welcomeyour early votes.

As many of you know, this summer my niece, Aspen Carner, worked with us in the office. She assisted us in performing a fileaudit and review and updating our records and database. She

was fast, efficient, professional and a whiz on the computer!Aspen has now left us to begin her freshman year at theUniversity of Denver. Pattie, John and I all miss having her inthe office and we really appreciated her help. Good Luck Aspen!

In an effort to continue our database/records review and update,we ask that you stop by the Association office, call, e-mail ordrop us a note with your up-to-date contact information. Thiswill ensure that the information we have on file for you is cor-rect. It is especially important for us to have your phone num-bers and emergency contact information. We also encourageyou to submit your e-mail address. If we ever need to get infor-mation to you quickly, e-mail is fast and inexpensive. We willonly send an e-mail to advise you of important information andwe will make certain that your e-mail address is not posted orrevealed in an e-mail.

Last, but not least, in the last few months, we have received anoverwhelming amount of neighbor complaints regarding dogs! The two most prevalent complaints are Dogs Barking andResidents not stooping to pick up their poop. Section XI,Page 23 of The Community Rules defines the Rules for Pets.First violation is a warning; 2nd violation in a 9-month periodis a fine of $100, 3rd violation is $200 and so-forth. Don’tforget, the Rules state that ALL dogs and cats must be regis-tered at the association office.

We are looking forward to fall and the upcoming Holidays. Asalways, if we can do anything for you, let us know.

Hello every-one! I hope

everyone hasenjoyed the sum-mer and you areready for the up-coming holidays.

I would like totake this opportu-nity to express asincere thank you

from myself and Bill Dory for the 16-yearAnniversary Party/Appreciation Day onAugust 13. We fully enjoyed visiting withall the residents who were able to drop bythe office for cake, coffee and conversa-tion. The cake was delicious! We boththank you for the opportunity to work forTanoan for 16 years. We have enjoyedbeing employed and working in the com-munity. Again, Thank You very much!

Golf CartsDuring the past few months we havestopped several unlicensed individuals driv-ing golf carts throughout the community. We have received many complaints thatindividuals are driving recklessly and oper-ating the carts in a very dangerous manner. The Community Rules, Section VII, Q(pg. 18) state that only licensed driversmay operate Golf Carts within Tanoan.

We surely do not want any golf cart acci-dents or serious injuries to young people.

HalloweenAs fall approaches, also comes one of ourchildren’s favorite holidays, Halloween. This year Halloween is on a Saturday.Halloween means that we will have lots ofchildren (big and small) in and aroundour community streets. If you are goingto participate in the “Trick or Treat” activ-ities with your children, we suggest thefollowing safety precautions be taken.

Take a flashlight with you or send onewith your children.

Be sure costumes have something flores-cent or reflective on them.

Check all snacks before allowing childrento eat them.

Please make sure the children stay on thesidewalks. If you are accompanying chil-dren, keep them on the sidewalks or if theyare going alone, please strongly emphasizeto them that they stay on the sidewalks.

Please take extra special care drivingthrough the community.

Finally, remember to call the AcademyGate at 821-0105 if you have any prob-lems with anyone bothering the childrenor bothering personal property or anyother concerns. We scheduled extra staffon duty that evening; so if you observe orsuspect any problems in the community, please call 821-0105. We want everyoneto enjoy a safe holiday.

As per Tanoan policy, Trick or Treat activi-ties will end at 8:30 pm. All residentsexpecting guests are reminded to be sure

to provide the Academy Gate with theirguest list in advance in an effort to expe-dite entry and keep unexpected individu-als from gaining entry.

Ventura Gate UseWe want to remind all residents that theVentura Gate is a resident’s gate only.Since we have installed the new monitor-ing system at the Ventura Gate, we havebeen shocked and amazed at the numberof residents who give cards and/or remotesto contractors, delivery people and othervisitors. We have also observed residentsget out of their vehicles to open the gatefor contractors, deliveries and visitors. The use of this gate by anyone other thana resident is inappropriate, a breach ofsecurity, and a violation of the Associationrules. Please help us keep Tanoan safe andsecure by ensuring that all non-residentsuse the Academy Gate. It is the only waywe can maintain a record of who is on theproperty. Safety for our children and resi-dents is our first priority.

Mail BoxesEach year at about the time school starts,we begin to get complaints about childrentampering with the mail boxes. Most ofthe time there is no real damage, justdoors opened and left open and flagsraised or bent. Tampering with mailboxes is a Postal Service Law violation, pretty serious stuff. This is just a requestthat all children be cautioned as to theseriousness of tampering with a mail box. Thanks for your assistance in this mater.

As always, if you have any comments orconcerns my door is always open.

5 TANOAN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

The Fundamentals:If any of you have seen a whiteMcDonald Electric truck driving aroundthe community driven by a nice lookingguy with a big smile, then you have seenMike McDonald. Now I will introduceyou to him. Mike has lived in theVillage Green subdivision of Tanoan for2 ½ years. He was born and raised inAlbuquerque, graduated fromAlbuquerque High School in 1980

where he was on the football, baseball, track and wrestling teams.Mike then attended New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) ona football scholarship graduating in 1984. After graduating hewent into the family business. McDonald Electric was started byhis grandfather Clyde McDonald in 1945. Mike’s dad, Clyde Jr.,took over the business until his retirement. Mike now runs thefamily business, McDonald Electric. McDonald Electric is theelectrician for Tanoan Community Association. We are one ofhis many customers. Mike’s family, The McDonalds have been inNew Mexico since it was still a territory. They were ranchers inRoy, New Mexico from 1908 and real pioneers of the state.

Background:Did I mention that Mike loves sports? Well it’s in the McDonaldBlood. Mike’s uncle Tommy McDonald played for both theDallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles as a receiver in the1950s and 1960s. Tommy is the only NFL football player fromNew Mexico to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. He was also

one of the last players in the NFL to play without a face mask.Ouch! Tommy McDonald now lives in Philadelphia, PA.

Every weekend as he grew up, Mike and his family either went toElephant Butte Lake to water ski and have fun on the houseboathis dad built, or go to their condo in Taos, NM to snow ski.Mike said they would ski on the snow all winter and then waterski on that same melted snow all summer. Mike said he and histhree brothers hit the lottery where their parents Clyde andEileen were concerned, he had a great childhood. Needless tosay, Mike is an expert water and snow skier, but it’s a little morethan that. He likes to water ski while carrying a person on hisshoulders and just in case that’s not enough excitement, he hashang glided off Aspen Mountain wearing snow skies and lived totell about it. But it doesn’t end there. Around 1999, he startedlearning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, here in Albuquerque at Jackson’sMarshal Arts School. Mike is a pioneer of mixed marshal artswhich has evolved into the Ultimate Fighting Championship orUFC as it is known. In spite of all his extreme leisure activities,Mike has remained a really nice guy, who really cares about thiscommunity and loves living here. However I wouldn’t mess withhim, that’s for sure.

Fun Facts:Mike once snow skied with Arnold, the Governor,Schwarzenegger, who was in Aspen filming a movie. Mike waswith friends skiing when Arnold asked if he could join them,

How could you say no to the Terminator?

By the way, ladies, did I happen to mention that Mike is single, and a very eligible bachelor?

Worth Mentioning: Mike McDonaldby Pattie Hinds

When is the Right Time to Mediate with Your Neighbor?Although mediation is available to neighbors, free of charge, at any time, you may wonder if there’s a right time to mediate withyour neighbor.

When people have a disagreement occasionally they get stuck. They get to a place where they can no longer talk about a solu-tion to the problem. Instead they get stuck just arguing about the problem and not moving toward a solution.

Mediators can help you and your neighbor get unstuck. Mediators do not act as judges. They do not determine who is right andwho is wrong in a disagreement. They help you and your neighbor discuss options that work for both of you for resolving yourdisagreement. Mediators help you resolve the problem, stop being angry with each other and get back to being neighbors.

So if you and your neighbor have tried to work out your problem on your own and have gotten stuck, give the AlternativeDispute Resolution (ADR) office a call. We can talk to you and your neighbor about the problem and set up a mediation ses-sion to help you reach a solution.

For more information about th City of Albuquerque’s Community Mediation Program you can look on the web atwww.cabq.gov/legal/adr/cmp or call the ADR office at 505-768-4500.

You think we have it bad today, just be glad you didn’t live in the1500’s!

Most people got married in June because they took their yearlybath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they did start to smell a little bit by, so brides carried bouquets offlowers to hide the odor. Hence, this started the custom we havetoday of carrying bouquets and of June brides.

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with a hot water. The man ofthe house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then othermen living in the household followed by the sons. Women werenext and finally female children. The babies were very last! Bythen, the water was so dirty you could actually loose someone init. This is how the saying started, don’t throw the baby out withthe bath water.

Homes back then had thatched roofs, thickstraw piled high they tied down. It was the onlyplace animals could get warm, so cats, dogs & other small ani-mals lived in the roof. When it rained the straw became slipperyand the animals would fall off the roof. Hence the saying, it’sraining cats & dogs.

Sometimes they could obtain pork to eat, which was a specialevent. When visitors came over, they would hang up their driedbacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man couldbring home the bacon. They would cut off a little to share withthe guests and then would all sit around and chew the fat.

Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burntbottom of the loaf, the family got the middle and guests got thetop, or “upper crust”.

Dear Tanoan Neighbor:To most people, a "volunteer" is someone who contributes time to helping others with no expectation of pay or other material benefitto herself. However, this does not mean that volunteer work is of no consequence for the volunteer. Indeed, it is widely believed thathelping others is as beneficial for the donor as it is for the recipient. Learn or develop a new skill - Volunteering is the perfect vehicle to discover something you are really good at and develop a new skill. Be part of your community - No man or woman is an island. We sometimes take for granted the community that we live in. Motivation and sense of achievement - Volunteers predominantly express a sense of achievement and motivation, and this is ultimatelygenerated from your desire and enthusiasm to help. Boost your career options

73% of employers would recruit a candidate with volunteering experience over one without 94% of employers believe that volunteering can add to skills 94% of employees who volunteered to learn new skills had benefited either by getting their first job, improving their salary, or being promoted

New interests and hobbies - Sometimes we do get locked into the “rat-race” of life and volunteering can give that escape to everydayroutine and create a balance in our lives. Meeting a diverse range of people - Volunteering brings together a diverse range of people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Boththe recipients of your volunteer efforts and your co-workers can be a rich source of inspiration and an excellent way to develop yourinterpersonal skills. Send a signal to your employer, teachers, friends and family… People pay attention to your life outside the environment in whichthey have direct contact with you.If you would like to learn about volunteer opportunities, please visit our website at www.cabq.gov/move or call MOVE at 767-5815.

Sincerely, Debra Saine, Mayor’s Office of Volunteerism & Engagement
