Nynas is an oil company, but we are a different kind of oil company.
Most large oil companies sell oil as a source of energy. We
use oil to create sustainable value. For us, oil is an important
component in many different products and processes.
We are experts. Our daily job is to refi ne one of the world’s
oldest natural resources for new uses. We concentrate on
four areas.
Oil’s capacity to insulate.
Oil’s capacity for solvency.
Oil’s capacity for binding.
Oil’s protective capacity.
We continually develop these oil qualities, in close cooperation
with our customers, so that they can be better put to use in
fi nal products.
Compared with the world’s oil giants, we are relatively small.
However, within specialised oil applications we are a big company.
That means that Nynas is one of the world’s market leaders when
oil is employed as an essential component in different processes.
As well as when developing new applications in order to create
even better products.
As a leading oil company, our challenge is to continually
develop oil’s possibilities in pace with our customers’ needs.
That’s what we call – Taking oil further.
A different oil company.

Refi ning ideas. That’s our job.
The world’s oil is a natural resource with many possibilities.
It was created and stored for millions of years before man fi rst
discovered its potential.
Most discussions have been about oil as a source of energy.
At Nynas, we are concentrated on some other, more specifi c
qualities. For instance, oil’s capacity for solvency, or its capacity
for insulation and binding.
We refi ne oil to employ these qualities within different pro-
duct areas. Our research and development begins with specifi c
customer needs and, is more often than not, conducted in close
collaboration with our customers.
WE’RE LOCATED AROUND THE WORLD
Europe is our focus for bitumen. Our other speciality oils are
produced for customers across the globe.
In order to quickly arrange product development and technical
support, or in order to ensure successful delivery, we have approxi-
mately 40 depots on fi ve continents and have offi ces in some 30
countries.

Our specialised oil applications:
LONG-LASTING TRANSFORMER OILS
Without a 24/7 supply of electricity the world would stand still. Within this complicated infrastructure, there are lots of transformers, both large and small. They have to work, in all conditions, year in and year out. It makes no difference if they are located in the cold of the artic or the heat of the tropics. Transformers are built to last, but they won’t work without a transformer oil that cools and insulates. All large transformers are assembled on location. When they are completed, they have to be fi lled with transformer oil. In order to meet the demand of durability, the oil must be extremely pure. We are an undeniable leader when it comes to supplying transformer oil. That is why the world’s largest transformer manufacturers are our customers. Nynas supplies nearly a third of the world’s annual demand.
INCREASING A TRANSFORMER’S LIFESPAN
Transformer oils from Nynas are extremely pure. If they’re handled correctly, they can last as long as 40 to 50 years. Despite this fact, we’re continually striving to create solutions that expand the lifespan of our oils. Our broad knowledge and long experience of production, logistics and distribution have led to the development of new areas of operation – one of which is Insulating Oil Management. Today, we can analyse used transformer oils in our laboratories. We assess the condition of an oil, and the transformer from which it came, and then recommend suitable measures that may be needed. All to increase the lifespan of the transformer. We’ve also developed a new technology that provides the possibility to purify oil that’s long been in use. This results in extending the lifespan of both the oil and the transformer even further.
ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND TYRES
In 2010, all the tyres sold in Europe will be made with tyre oils that are non-hazardous to our health. The EU has stipulated that tyres may no longer contain aromatic extender oils. This means that the world’s tyre manufacturers are in the process of changing their production. Nynas began planning its new hydrotreatment facility in Nynäshamn, Sweden in 1980. From the very beginning, we took into account the fact that it was only a matter of time before aromatic extender oils would be replaced by safer alternatives. When it comes to producing oils that are environmentally sound, Nynas has always been a pioneer. Together with the Swedish retreading industry, we were the fi rst in the world to test safer tyre oils in demanding situations. These oils have been in use for the past 15 years. As the tyre industry faces new demands, Nynas stands ready.
LUBRICATING MOVEMENT
Lubricants, greases and metalworking fl uids are important applications of our oils. Many of the things all around us contain metal objects. Most of this metal, especially in cars and construction materials, has been formed with the help of metalworking fl uids that contain some of our oils. Minimising friction in moving bearings is another important application. That our oils last as long as the mechanical components they go into goes without saying. The same exceptional standards hold true for their oxidation stability, solubility and temperature properties as well as their bleeding and separation capacities. We can help our customers by developing lubricants and greases suitable for the most extreme situations – from wind turbines in the artic to drilling under the ocean’s surface, or even for the rigorous demands of the most advanced racing cars.

ASPHALT UNDER PRESSURE
How does asphalt withstand the pressure of the world’s heaviest traffi c and busiest airport runways? Airports are a perfect example of one of the areas that require high-performance asphalts. These asphalts contain specially modifi ed bitumen. In layman terms, they contain components that increase strength, durability and fl exibility. This can make asphalt much more resistant to the forces of extreme weights and pressures. A higher resistance to damage caused by fuel oils and de-icing fl uids can also be obtained with special modifi cation. Specially modifi ed binders from Nynas are products that appear more and more in situations that demand high- performance asphalts. These can include heavily traffi cked roads, bus terminals and shipping container storage areas.
REDUCING ROAD NOISE
The more energy effi cient, effective and comfortable we want travel to be in the future, the increasingly important long-lasting roads, improved surfaces and reduced noise levels become. We believe that nothing can meet these needs like asphalt – and good asphalt demands good bitumen. Although asphalt is a well-proven material that has been around for a long time, the market needs are continually changing. We are all increasingly environmentally conscious and place higher demands on reduced noise levels. As Nynas is a major supplier of bitumen, we’re an integral part of these positive developments. One example of this is our assistance in the development of asphalt that reduces noise levels. This will do more than just create a quieter environment. We will have minimised the need for insulating sound walls, thereby improving the use of land and property and saving our natural landscapes.
PAVING THE WAY TO ENERGY SAVINGS
Asphalt is a perfect product for recycling. When a road’s surface is repaved, the old asphalt can be reused – often right on location. Combined with a specifi c mixture of new asphalt and bitumen, the old road can be like new again. It is easy to fi gure out that recycling means a minimised use of resources, transportation and energy. This also means a reduced strain on our environment. We also have the technology, and the bitumen, that enables asphalt paving with greatly reduced heating require-ments – cold paving. By simply paving at lower temperatures, there are huge possibilities to save energy. In certain conditions, and on certain surfaces, this is defi nitely the technology of tomorrow.

This is Nynas.
80 YEARS OF OIL
Nynas was founded in Sweden in 1928. During the last 30 years,
we have been specialised within naphthenic specialty oils and
bitumen for selected applications.
Today we are over 800 employees with specialist knowledge.
We maintain approxmiately 40 depots on fi ve continents with
production facilities in Europe, North and South America and
offi ces in some 30 countries.
We have a €2 billion turnover and a stable history of good
fi nancial results.
OUR VISION
We have a well-defi ned vision and an extremely proactive strategy
for our future. Our vision is:
”Through the world-class dedication of our people, Nynas
will be the best long-term partner in specialised oil applications,
doubling the business every fi ve years.”
Our driving force is, in close collaboration with our customers,
to develop our products and services so that they always meet
the demands and needs of our customers – both now and in the
future. In this way, our expertise and knowledge are as important
as our products themselves.
OUR ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
Nynas operates within a fi eld where the experience and knowl-
edge of environmental considerations are of paramount import-
ance. Transportation, storage and refi ning operations demand
technology, equipment and routines of not only superior quality,
but that also show the greatest of respect for our environment.
Our refi ning operations also require large amounts of energy.
That’s one reason why our facilities employ a variety of methods
to reduce CO2 emissions and create an environmentally sustainable
production. One example of this is the bio-fuelled, combined
heating and power plant in Nynäshamn in Sweden, where our
largest refi nery is located. The plant supplies the refi nery with
steam in exchange for the refi nery’s waste heat. It also uses
wood and recycled chips, reducing CO2 emissions by 93%.
Our products – when correctly handled –
have a minimum of effect upon our environment.
OUR WORLDWIDE ACCOUNTABILITY
As a global company in the speciality oil industry, Nynas shoulders
a responsibility for more than just our environment. Considera-
tions for safety, regulations and competitive methods, as well as
for our staff, also play extremely large roles.
In everything we do, we strive to fulfi l, and take responsibility
for, those demands that the world places upon us.
One way we do this is by supporting and abiding by the
chemical industry’s voluntary self-regulatory programme known
as ”Responsible Care”. The agreement applies stringent demands
concerning health, safety and our environment. We do our utmost
to reduce our consumption of natural resources and energy. We
also provide our customers with all the support and knowledge
they need to handle our products as safely as we do ourselves.
