THE DIRT — STORIES, TIPS, AND PRODUCTS

DEDICATED TO EXCELLENCE IN CONSTRUCTION

NEW NAME AND LOOK — SAME COMMITMENT

Our number-one goal — through our products, services,

and publications — is to help you be successful. This is the

backbone of our “Building. Together.” program in which we

listen and respond to your needs, demands, and ideas for

improvements. And it’s also the reason behind the new

name and look for this magazine.

We’re extending the listen-and-respond concept beyond

machines rolling of our production lines and your dealer’s

lot. That’s where your work begins and ours must continue.

In addition to creating productivity-enhancing features

like Autoshift — which you’ll read about in this issue — and

Ultimate Uptime through John Deere JDLink™, we want to

provide you the stories, tips, and product information that

help you fne-tune your operation.

The Dirt will be published on a quarterly basis, but you can still

expect the same contractor and project profles, new product

information, and business-optimization tips, along with some

fresh new content — coming your way soon.

This publication is tailored to your needs, so in the spirit of

“Building. Together.”, what construction-related topics would

you like to have discussed? How can others beneft from your

success story? Share your thoughts with us at DirtEditor@

JohnDeere.com.

And in the meantime, read on — and enjoy getting your

hands dirty.

TO AN EASIER WORKFLOW

Whether in the hustle and bustle of NYC or

the sun-soaked hills of San Diego, the K-Series

Backhoes’ Autoshift feature makes for efortless

efciency on any jobsite.

No jobsite is created equal. However, one thing that

should remain constant regardless of location is

equipment that makes your job easier.

Say hello to the John Deere K-Series Backhoes. The

machines’ smooth-shifting fve-speed transmission with

Autoshift option makes the long haul a joyride. And to fnd

out how customers are beneftting from Autoshift in the

feld, we caught up with Max Lituchy of Steven Dubner

Landscaping in New York City and Sonny Hale of Sonny

Hale Backhoe Service in San Diego, California. Regardless

of the coast, productivity was up.

36957_DKMAG210CU_Winter2014_FNL.indd 3 10/14/14 7:42 PM

“On these larger jobsites, I know the guys

appreciate not having to worry about shifting

at the right time, putting strain on the trans-

mission, or revving the engine up too much.”

Max Lituchy, Partner and Project Manager

EMPIRE STATE OF MIND Trained as a landscape architect, Lituchy got his start at Steven

Dubner Landscaping as a summer gig, and it wasn’t much later

that his tireless work ethic landed him the titles of Partner and

Project Manager. Responsible for everything from consulting on

the design of a proposed landscape to lining up the workforce

and purchasing new equipment, Lituchy is the type that’s always

on — on time, on budget, and certainly on top of his projects.

“I test out all the new equipment before it comes in. We have a

rigorous demo process, and this backhoe is great. You can see the

diference in the operators’ work — they take more pride when

they’re in nice machines, and it shows in their performance.”

MANICURING THE METWhile Dubner Landscaping’s 310SK Backhoe doesn’t get much

use on the company’s rooftop jobs, it’s the perfect ft for today’s

project in Central Park, resodding the lawn surrounding the Met-

ropolitan Museum of Art. Along with the machine’s extendable

dipperstick, low-ground-pressure, and quick-coupling features,

it’s Autoshift that stands as its ultimate stroke of genius.

“The Central Park Conservancy has its own compost material

we’re using,” says Lituchy, “but it’s located in the north part of

the park, so we have to do some traveling back and forth. On

these larger jobsites, I know the guys appreciate not having

to worry about shifting at the right time, putting strain on the

transmission, or revving the engine up too much.” And when

you’re traveling 27 blocks down 5th Avenue with unpredictable

stop-and-go trafc, that smooth shifting and extra getup go a

long way. “Plus I don’t have to worry about trailering the machine

— that saves plenty of time and money.”

Already have a K-Series Backhoe,

but not the convenience of Autoshift?

Luckily, this efciency-enhancing

option is available as a software

payload from your dealer.

1 Contact your dealer and tell

them you’re interested in the

Autoshift feature.

2 Your dealer can send the upgrade

directly to your machine through

your JDLink™ subscription utilizing

the remote programming capability

of John Deere WorkSight.™ Your

dealer can also perform the upgrade

on the jobsite if necessary.

3 Enjoy the ease of operation that

makes you even more efcient

and proftable.

It’s as simple as that. If you’re

interested in making the transition

to Autoshift, ask your dealer about

Bali Motital, one of Steven Dubner

Landscaping’s backhoe operators, enjoys

more than just the K-Series’ Autoshift

feature: “This machine is comfortable

and strong. Its quick-coupler, extendable

dipperstick, and scrap grapple all help

me be more productive. I like John Deere

because the machines are fast, powerful,

and comfortable.”

WORKING HARD ON THE WEST COASTOperating backhoes since the early ’70s, Sonny Hale of Sonny Hale Backhoe Service

has seen his fair share of machines, and one thing has remained consistent — his

satisfaction with John Deere. And though the West Coast may be known for its laid-

back attitude and relaxed way of life, Hale chooses Deere machines because they’re

the only ones that can match his

work ethic. Raised in the Midwest,

he’s not afraid to get his hands dirty.

From moving dirt to demolition,

Hale can handle it all once he’s

climbed into the cab.

RUNNING THE LINE“Every day’s diferent, but today

we’re digging lines for the electri-

cians to lay telephone wires,” says

Hale. “The 410K is useful on any site

because it has the power needed for

this hard ground, and the Autoshift

is especially convenient if I’m ever

running some length. It helps me

be more productive because I don’t

have to worry about fipping knobs. I can go into the pile and the backhoe will adjust

to use a lower gear, I can take of to drop the load, and then cruise right back without

having to touch anything. It’s like an automatic car transmission, I can keep my hands

on the wheel — it’s just a lot easier and more user friendly.”

Anything John Deere can do to make your job easier is considered a win in our books,

and that victory is especially sweet when it’s one that helps you grow your business.

“Productivity is the key to my business. The more productive the machine is, the faster

I can get the job done — that makes my contractor money and it gets me callbacks.

And the K-Series is full of features that make me more efcient. Extendable dipper-

stick, quick-coupler, and Autoshift are all features that, now that I’ve had them, I can

never go back. As long as it’s available, every machine I buy will have Autoshift.”

GOING THE DISTANCE WITH DEEREJohn Deere is dedicated to building lasting relationships with you through machine

features that give you the edge on your competition and a dealer network that is

committed to keeping you proftable. “I’d absolutely recommend Deere,” says

Lituchy. “We’ve run other brands, but the guys like the Deere machines.”

And Hale seems to agree. “My relationship with Deere and my dealer, RDO, goes

back to the early ’70s. They stand behind me should something go wrong, and actually

bend over backwards for us little guys because they understand I need to be running

to make money. I’d recommend Deere to everybody.”

BECAUSE IT HAS THE POWER

NEEDED FOR THIS HARD GROUND,

AND THE AUTOSHIFT IS ESPECIALLY

CONVENIENT IF I’M EVER RUNNING

MORE PRODUCTIVE BECAUSE I

Getting your work done

faster is within reach on

any jobsite with the K-Series’

extendable dipperstick. Its

extra reach means you can

spend less time repositioning

the machine and more time

piling up proft. And along

with the Autoshift feature

and ride control, speed really

is the name of the game.

Veteran backhoe operator

and committed Customer

Advocate Group member

Sonny Hale appreciates the

ease it affords his workday,

“I can just put it in drive. It’ll

pick the gear according to

the rpm as I go into a pile,

and then with ride control

I can take off and go even

quicker — even with a

full load of dirt. Add in the

comfort of these cabs and

you have it all. You get out of

this cab at the end of the day

and you’re just as fresh as

when you got in.”

In April, we featured Hal and Brian Pierce of Pierce

Builders in Greater Hartford, Connecticut, and

discussed what makes their operation unique.

Now, we see how it’s helping keep them busy.

Attention to detail is a skill that can make or break. And for

Hal Pierce, minding the little things that matter most is a

practice that comes naturally. The owner of Pierce Builders,

along with his wife, Alescia, and brother, Brian, makes sure

this trait is evident in all the company does.

Take their feet, for example. Not everyone can see the beneft of washing and detailing equipment at the end of every day, but the pride and professionalism that conveys says more about Pierce Builders than any ad or salesperson could.

“To my thinking, each piece in our feet is a rolling business card — so we wash each of them every day to hopefully place this thought in our current and potential customers’ heads: If I hire Pierce Builders, they are going to treat my project with the respect they give their own feet.” As far as current customers go,

it’s a strategy that’s paid of.

SUPPORT SYSTEMContracted by Regan Development, Pierce

Builders’ current project involves laying the

groundwork for housing units specially de-

signed to support the independent living of

people with multiple sclerosis (MS). A disease

that afects nerve cells in the brain and spinal

cord, it disrupts the ability of the nervous

system to communicate and results in a wide

range of symptoms. Severity can vary day by

day, making for a unique set of needs when it

comes to housing. For Regan Development,

the issue lands close to home, as their Vice

President Ken Regan was diagnosed in 1993.

“This is the frst project in New England

specifcally for people who need services

coordinated by the National MS Society,”

says Regan. “As a result, we can ofer fully

accessible apartments that allow them to

remain independent in the community.”

From 42-in.-wide, remote-controlled doors

and hardwood foors that accommodate

wheelchairs and scooters, to fexible wiring

and structural components for the installa-

tion of bedside lifts, it’s a project where every

detail was accounted for — making Pierce

Builders a more-than-ideal partner.*

TEAMWORKNo matter the project, it’s no secret you need

the right tools, and Pierce Builders seems

to have the perfect combo. “Our operators

like the versatility of the 290G LC Excavator

for this job. It’s compact enough to dig the

foundation, and has a powerful engine that

accommodates our big bucket for loading the

300D ADT,” remarks Hal Pierce. “Then with

the 644K Loader, we have the advantage of

the side-dump feature that makes flling the

footing trenches much more efcient. The

bucket’s a little bigger and carries the perfect

amount of stone to fll what’s been excavated,

and we can just keep rolling all around the

perimeter.

“On top of that, we’re also utilizing JDLink™

in the 644K and 300D. It lets us monitor

fuel consumption while idling and loading,

and under power, so we know how we need

to operate diferently to get the best fuel

economy.” It’s safe to say Hal Pierce runs a

tight ship, and we’re glad we can help him

stay on top of his game. But regardless of

tools and technology, he’s got something

extra that money can’t buy.

BUILDING A REPUTATIONWhile Pierce Builders got this job the old-

fashioned way through competitive bidding,

it was more than numbers that won round

two. “After a few weeks of watching us work,

Ken seemed to be impressed. He liked the

equipment, the guys, how we left the jobsite

looking at the end of the day — so he started

asking us about a much-larger MS project in

New York that would include more roadwork,

infrastructure, and cuts and flls. The two-

hour-and-fve-minute drive one way made

us hesitant, but Ken insisted. So we turned

in some numbers and were given the job.”

THE 644K LOADER HAS THE ADVANTAGE OF

THE SIDE-DUMP FEATURE THAT MAKES FILLING

FOOTING TRENCHES MUCH MORE EFFICIENT.

There’s no doubt pricing will always play a

factor, but nothing beats knowing your work

ethic and quality give you an advantage over

competitors for miles around. Which seems

to be something Pierce’s dealer, W.I. Clark,

can claim, as well.

GETTING YOU WHAT YOU NEED

TO GET THE JOB DONEHal Pierce continues, “We’re able to do what

we do because of the machines and support

from John Deere. I’ve owned these machines

for years and have had little problem with

any of my purchases. Our dealer rep, Greg

Hurlburt, has been great at helping us get the

most out of the machines through uptime

services like JDLink. He also helps us select

and fnance the machines that will grow our

business, so we can take on more projects

like this new MS housing facility in New York.”

When it comes to keeping you working with

the machines that best suit your needs,

John Deere is happy to help. And when it’s

for such a great cause — well, that’s a detail

not easily overlooked.

★ THE 644K ★

MORE POWER, CONTROL, AND PRODUCTIVITY

It’s not just big torque reserves that make the 644K Loader such an impres-

sive performer. Single-lever joysticks or two-lever fngertip controls provide

smooth, near-efortless control. The engine/hydraulic match maintains

good boom and bucket power into and out of the pile, even with big loads

and wet or hard-packed material. And Powerllel™-equipped loaders feature

an innovative design that allows the machines to excel at a wide variety

of material-handling tasks. Add in the High-Lift option to extend your lift

height measured at the hinge pin by 431 mm (17 in.), and you’ve got a loader

that does the heavy lifting for you.

INCREASE YOUR

UPTIMEWITH POWERPLAN™

Your work involves many moving

parts — from coordinating sched-

ules and deadlines to the actual

innerworkings of your equipment.

And keeping all of these elements

functioning in sync is crucial for

reaching your annual goals.

Downtime caused by unexpected — and

inevitable — machine repairs poses an

obstacle to the best of plans. Luckily, our

PowerPlan’s Major Purchase Option can

help you preserve cash fow, even during

the slow season.

A SIDE-BY-SIDE LOOK

Take these two contactors, for example.

They’re the same in terms of size, equip-

ment, and job type, but one has PowerPlan

while the other does not.

Now let’s take a look at what happens to

their cash fow when they both experience

the same costly maintenance issue:

As a commercial line of credit administered

by John Deere Financial, PowerPlan allows

this contractor to enjoy fxed payments

and terms on large repair expenses. This

means he can get his machinery back up

and running while preserving cash fow for

ongoing operational expenses. It also helps

cut down on paperwork by condensing all

of his monthly invoices into one.

Gain the peace of mind of knowing you’ll

be prepared for emergencies by setting up

a PowerPlan of your own.

From skid steers and compact excavators to trailers and dump trucks, JDLink universal

telematics products and subscription services let you manage all your assets with the

same JDLink interface you already use for your John Deere construction equipment.

Whether you want to simply track and limit your equipment’s locations or gain

utilization data and maintenance tracking, there’s a solution to ft your need.

To gain some insight on how customers are

beneftting from the Asset-Tracking Terminal

and JDLink Locate subscription, we talked

to Technology Consultant Leo Wambold of

James River Equipment.

“Even on smaller jobsites where you may only

have a handful of attachments, once you start

getting busy it can be easy to lose track of

where you last used a bucket or set of forks —

it happens to almost everyone. But with these

slap-and-track devices you can focus on get-

ting the job done instead of worrying about or

wondering where that attachment is. They’re

perfect for anything without a power source

because they have an internal battery, and all

they take is a couple of screws or adhesive to

be applied — I know my customers appreciate

that convenience. And with the geofencing and

tracking capabilities, you have a much better

chance of recovering the equipment should it

be stolen. We’re even thinking about putting

them on all the equipment and attachments

in our yard here at the dealership — they just

make your job that much easier.”

Now you can add JDLink™ to your entire feet Keep better tabs on all your jobsite assets

Access machine location

and add security by set-

ting up a geofence around

a machine so you can be

alerted if it travels outside

the virtual boundary. The

hardware, an Asset-Track-

internal battery, so it can

be easily installed with

screws or adhesive on

anything you need to track:

trailers, tools, attachments,

equipment — you name

it. The only mounting

requirement is a clear view

of the sky, providing you

the ability to track and

secure all your equipment

with one application.

Includes machine location,

geofence and curfew fea-

tures, and adds distance

traveled and engine hours

so you can track utilization

and schedule periodic

real-time data updates.

Two different hardware

options cover everything

from light-duty trucks to

skid steers and heavy-duty

The hardware supporting

these two JDLink services

is built tough to withstand

demanding applications.

Both JDLink Locate and

“THIS MACHINE IS PROOF THAT YOU CAN HAVE AN FT4 MACHINE THIS MACHINE IS PROOF THAT YOU CAN HAVE AN FT4 MACHINE

Our Final Tier 4 Grader exceeds operator expectations. As a member of our

sightlines — especially with more emissions equipment in the engine housing.

But John Deere engineers managed to tuck it away without any visibility loss.

Tim’s other concern was power — until he got behind the wheel. “I can guarantee

you, running it myself, it hasn’t lost any power at all.” And here’s a bonus: this

grader’s total fuid consumption (diesel plus diesel exhaust fuid) is lower than

the diesel fuel consumption alone on our previous model. It’s one more example
