we must use our critical thinking to review

the information and to reach our own

    conclusions.

The media is part of our everyday life, so try

to be open-minded and think things through

when you are presented with information.

Do you think that society is over-influenced

    by mass media?

Look at the words in bold in the text.Which word means:1. a careful way of thinking about things.2. a careful examination of a situation or process

    3. someone who possesses something4. wanting to consider other people's ideas and opinions5. get to a particular point or situation6. that you can trust on it7. make an effort to do something8. a piece of information that is known to be true

Match the sentences:1. We read the news2. The mass media works at full3. Talk shows are very popular

    4. Information affects us

    a. on TV.b. during political campaigns.c. in the local newspapers.d. either directly or indirectly.

    Bryan: Keep going.

Sam: Okay. Their previous MO was to offer women from the emerging East-European

countries/nationslike Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria jobs in the west as maids and nannies.Once they smuggled them in, they'd addict them to drugs/narcoticsand turn them into prostitutes.Lately, however, they've decided that it's more economical just to kidnap traveling young women.Saves on transportation costs.

Liam Neeson was born in Northern Ireland, UK. He worked as

a factory operator, truck driver, assistant architect and an

amateur boxer. When he was young, he sought a career as

a teacher; however, in 1976, Neeson joined the Belfast Lyric

Players' Theatre and made his professional acting debut in

the play The Risen People. After two years, Neeson moved

to Dublin's Abbey Theatre where he performed the classics.

It was here that he was spotted by the director

of Excalibur(1981), which dealt with the legend of the King

    Arthur.

From there, he acted in a number of average films and Television Mini-series until he gained

notice for his role as the mute in Suspect(1987). Neeson did not play the lead in a movie

until he appeared in Darkman (1990). However, his greatest role was Oskar

Schindler in Steven Spielberg's Schindlers List (1993). For this role, Neeson was nominated for

the Academy Award and the Golden Globe. In 1993, he made his Broadway debut inAnna

Christie. In the next 3 years, Neeson played characters close to his roots when he was the

eighteenth century Scottish Highlander Rob Roy (1995) and the Irish revolutionary

leaderMichael Collins (1996). He was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire

by Queen Elizabeth II twelve years ago.

In recent years, Neeson has very often taken roles in which he is a mentor/trainer/father

figure to a younger man, as in, for example, Batman Begins (2005), Gangs of New York

(2002), and Star Wars: Episode I Phantom Menace(1999). His character often must die

early in the movie or the student's life so that the young man can apply the Neeson

character's lessons to his own struggle.

    True or false

    1. Neeson is 59 years old.

    2. He wanted to be a teacher.

    3. He started his acting career in the theatre.

Sexual Slavery is a harsh reality for millions of people all over the world. People are trapped in

an abusive system. Young women and girls are bought and sold like objects, and treated

with no dignity or human decency. They are victims of a perverse, violent and world-wide

    trafficking network.

Slavery exists in a variety of forms, but all forms of slavery share some common

characteristics: slaves are forced to work; are owned or controlled by an "employer"; are

dehumanized and treated as commodities; and are physically constrained and unable to

move. For example, when they try to scape, they are beaten with metal objects and

handcuffed to a pole in caves; and when the victims refuse to work, they are burned with

    cigarettes, tortured or beaten down.

Argentina is primarily a destination country for men, women and children trafficked for sexual

exploitation and labour. Most foreign victims are women and children trafficked from

Paraguay, Bolivia, Brazil, and the Dominican Republic. They are taken to the country to

supply Argentinas sex trade. Argentine victims are similarly trafficked from rural to urban

areas. Kidnappers work in networks and rotate victims from province to province, too.

Generally, traffickers drug and abduct girls in broad day-light and in front of witnesses. But

the witnesses are generally too scared to talk. However, girls into prostitution are not always

kidnapped. Sometimes, they are lured with promises of a good-paid job to scape from the

    poverty they grow up in.

Like in the movie Taken, these girls leave a family behind. In every city, in every province and

in every country there are mothers, fathers, sons and daughter trying desperately to find their

lost relatives in a constant and agonising search. However, this is a subject that the

government and media rarely talk about.
