The Searex V replaced the Searex I11 with SSB Malaysia. The Searex V has been contracted for two years firm plus three one year options. The unit was extensively upgraded prior to starting the SSB contract. The Searex I11 finished an outstanding career with SSB working almost 20 years without being off contract one day- which could well be the longest running contract for a single client in the history of the oil field.

With 65 professionals, the Sedco Forex engineering center is by far the largest of any drilling contractor. Managed by Jean Cahuzac, occupying a floor and a half at Montrouge headquarters, there are three departments: Rig Engineering, Drilling Engineering and Computing Science. We will present here Rig Engineering. In the next issue of "Connection" we will take a look at Drilling Engineering and Computing Science. The Rig Engineering Department has extensive responsibilities from Field Support and Shipyard Management to Development Engineering.

Rig Engineering will answer the questions you may have regarding HSE issues, structure and naval architect problems, rig modifications or new designs, etc. To get assistance, your district manager will fill out an REA (request for engineering action) which will reach Montrouge via the region Operation/Technical manager. Due to work overload, feedback may not be as fast as you may wish sometimes. But do not hesitate to ask for help, we will always answer!!

Around 50% of Engineering's resources are dedicated to Development projects. Rig Engineering's main challenge is to work on HSE topics, prepare the evolution of the fleet through life enhancement, the retrofit of mechanized systems and the follow up of new designs. "The biggest project this year was the fatigue analysis study done on the Sedco 704," says Pierre Morvan. (see Box) Prior to a 90-day modifications project for her Gannet work, Sedco Forex bought in international experts Bureau Veritas to study the structure of the 704 and give a second opinion. The good news was that there was practically nothing to do. Unlike the work done on the Sedco 702, which had suffered more from tropical climes and required plating on the columns and trusses because of

substantial loss of steel, the 704 had far fewer structural problems. "No important cracks in the steel," said shipyard manager Gerard Maucuer. Today, there are 38 people in rig engineering managed by Pierre Morvan. Pierre has a dual experience in rig construction (land, swamp barges, the Trident series, the Drill Star) and operations management (his last post was district manager in Syria).

A brief resume of each section in the Rig Engineering Department:

1. Rig Modifications & Upgrades Denis Brondel, 18 years with the company, has a background in electrical and structural engineering. He first worked on the Pentagone 84, then the Searexes, Tridents and Drill Star. The people in his section are at the shipyard. In Singapore : Claude Gabillard with rig 37 (Hibiscus) upgrading for Total, Paul O'Keefe overseeing the Trident VII conversion to a floating hotel following its sale to ADOC and electronics specialist Wolfgang Schlutz. Paul Sanchez is in Nigeria with the Lutece and rig 1. Gerard Maucuer and Gary Bohnsack are in Rotterdam with the 704. Aside from overseeing these projects, Denis also puts together the general design and budget for these jobs and deals with all the legal rulings, like ABS.

Marine & Structure \, Comprised mainly of naval architects and structural engineers, Paul Tranter's section becomes involved whenever we get into the marine side of work - be it a study in wave motion characteristics or increasing deckload. Before bidding, the marketing people may ask for a study to find out if a rig can work in new waters. If a client wants an upgrade, this section will study the possibilities. The methodology developed has evolved into a three-step approach: (1) listing of all possible incidents for each hazard and whether or not they are possible, (2) details of the rig crew's response to the incident

We are in the process of incorporating these comments into the final version of the safety case. All eleven North Sea rigs must submit a safety case to the UK HSE by the end of 1993-

There is no such thing as a "typicaln day on a rig and the Sedco/BP 71 1 is hardly a typical rig. make the rig a safer place to live 1 and work. Among them are:

strategically placed handhold I , and grab rails, marked escape I routes, non-opening windows ' (for gas protection), audible and

visual alarms, disconnection of I "non-explosion proof" electrical 1 equipment, hydrocarbon gas I detectors, fire proofing the inner

structure, fire dampers for I HVAC. installing monitors for air

intake in the mud processing area, illuminated escape signs, emergency lights for hazardous areas, securing containers. Updating instructions also. (e.g. written instructions for manriding winches.) m he men on board responsible for implementing these compliances are the barge engineer, the chief electrician and the OIM. Some of the projects just recently done were building a walkway on the helideck, blocking off hazardous areas on pipe deck and building railings all around the outside walkways.

A DAY ON THE RIG Today is an atypical day on rig. After drilling a well for Deminex, the rig has just moved and is now back with B.P. for a five- day plug and abandon. Atlas is now perforating, then will pull the plug, remove water and circulate mud and cement. Everyone is holed up in the movie room while the well is opened and Sabre, the HzS specialists, are giving a demonstration on mask and oxygen tank use. Once the "all clear" signal is given, everyone goes back to their respective tasks. Dave Burton, B.P. drill rep. and company man on board, has his office next door to rig

Using the ship JOIDES Resolu- lion, the Ocean Drilling Program team deepened a hole called 504B that scientists have been coring since 1979. The hole, ten inches in diame- ter, is 125 miles south of the Costa Rica Rift in the eastern Pacific.

Scientists had predicted that the latest coring would reveal the start of a different layer. They were right. says Henry Dick of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, one of the team's co-leaders: Approaching 6.550 feet, rocks were found to have

I larger crystals and to be denser and less permeable. The team expects to eventually find extinct magma chambers. Rocks at the bottom of the present hole are still cooling: at 35WF. they are "just right to cook

Dedication, common sense and fairness were the words Chairman Euan Baird used in describing Vice Chairman Roland G@n when he retir2.d this year after 42 years with the company. "Impressive as your achievements are," writes Baird, "it is the quality of your leadership which we will remember most vividly. Your steadfast commitment to the best interests of Schlumberger

supply of common sense, made difficult decisions seem relatively straightforward. ... Finally, your deep sense of fairness, particularly towards people or business sectors least able to defend themselves, was an essential factor in the development of a cornpa& where diversity has always been considered an asset." Hired by Marcel Schlumberger in 1950 as a field engineer, Roland first started overseas assignments in South America and Indonesia. His career made spectacular leaps from then on as he joined top management ~ ~ S P B S , then President of Dowel1 Schlumberger ('67-'68), joining Schlumberger Limited thereafter in various oilfield services positions. Roland played an integral part representing Schlumberger on Forex's Board of Directors in easing the transition into S'chlumberger practices when, in 1970, Forex became a full subsidiary of Schlumberger. WELCOME HOME. DADDY Edikan Ntia

w ^> {\ I remember the 27th November and several years back when my husband James Ntia used to move from one rig to another as a rig warehouseman. He started work with Forex Neptune as a rig clerk in 1981; three years later we met. Initially, it was difficult to adjust to the .one week offltw~~yveeks on board schedule. As it was, occasions like birthdays often fell during his on-duty periods. Then came November 27th 1990 when Maverick, our son, arrived. James was on board the Sedco H, then (tailing for Elf in N$eria. Remember Maverick? The 2 112 month-old baby on fee last page of the June 1991 issue? Unfortunately, Maverick had to celebrate his first birthday without daddy who was then on the Sedneth 202. Thankfully, James was lucky to be available for his ten- ear service award party. I was beginning !/ w to wonder what would happen come November 27th 1992 when Maverick is two. But thanks to hard work and dedication, James now works at the Port Harcourt base office as assets coordinator. I no longer have to worry and little Maverick can now wait every evening when daddy closes for the day t&ay "Welcome home, daddy". ''

Sifon Maverick James is happy to have daddy home.

Being seasoned drilling contractors, we learned real fast that we could go to the regulators with our IADC hats on and get a much more receptive audience &om those folks. ,We all had the same problems, we could all find our own solutions if we could have a consistent interpretation of the existing rules and the proposed new rules. We worked together very closely in this area without giving up any of our competitive spirit. This was the driving force behind the continued growth of the chapter."

We are happy to announce the arrival of Ira Gemais to the JAWS Purchasing group this year. His immediate assignmentis Project Coordinator for NSR, Brazil, and the 471 and he brings a wealk6f experience and knowledge to his position. Ira joined the company on January 1, 1974. He had been working for the previous eight years at the Avondale Shipyard in New Orleans as an electrical foreman. There he assisted in the constdition of the Sedc6702 and 703. Upon the rigs' completion, he was asked to join the company and move to Aberdeen. He jumped at the opportunity. He spent six years living in Aberdeen

while working as Rig Electrician on the 703 and 701, then eventually as Electrical Supervisor on

@ transferred to Dallas "sustaining" engineering group as a Staff Technician, which Ira describes as really a "worldwide trouble shooter." He did a lot of traveling in this position. He says, "It was nothing to be sent out on a two-week projectpd stay three m ths." He stayed ' % Dallas until 1988 when both headquarters engineering department moved to Montrouge. He states, "Those last couple of years in Dallas were traumatic. The not knowing if you would be in the next lay-off was tough." Fortunately at this time the Lafayette office*?,

rq needed a staff engineer and Ira was availa61'e. This sent Ira back to his home state of Louisiana. The unfortunate part was that being back in his home state only lasted one year when the Lafayette office closed. As good fortune would have it, an opening existed for himr$o join the ~ o n t f 8 u ~ e 66~reventati&' Maintenance" group. This suited Ira as it gave him a chance to work in an area he had a strong background in. After a couple of years of living and working in Paris, a challenging opportunity came open to retum to the U.S. and JAWS. ~ o r t u n h e l ~ for JAWS heLaccepted. Ira's onfy regret was in not having had more time to work under Femand Rat, a boss he really appreciated. Moving back to the States gave Ira and his gracious and vivacious wife Sandra an opportunity to be near their original Thibodaux, Louis roots akain. Ira and Sandra do proclaim themselves "full-fledged coon ass". Another major influence was the chance to be near their two children, Bobby, who was in his third year at Baylor Law School, and Christy, a high school graduate of the American School of Paris and now a scholastic schbiarship student awrinity University in San Antonio. Ira says it's great to have all his possessions in one place again. Ira states that the greatest experience he has had while working for Sedco Forex has been "the people I have met". Indeed, Ira doesn't meet many strange+ zxr- . w g,

Besides adding Ira's expert equipment knowledge and field experience to what JAWS can offer, he offers a positive and can-do attitude that goes h a d in hand with what we want JAWS to represent to our field locations.
