Take out your expository paragraph that you wrote for last night's homework. Homework: Make corrections to your paragraph and mark the following: Underline topic sentence that states which ad you chose to analyze. Write a "T" next to where you stated the target audience. Circle when you state which persuasive techniques the ad uses. Star (*) the evidence to support (see your chart from yesterday). Agenda: 1. Warm Up 2. First Read: 5 W's 3. Second Read: Techniques 4. Critical Thinking Questions Oct 191:17 PM First Read: During the first read of your assigned article, you will be marking the text for the 5 W's , as well writing down any questions that come to mind as you read. I will model the first part of the article," Taco Bell dropping kids, meal, toys" for you. Oct 191:13 PM Second Read: On this handout you will see terms and definitions that you are already familiar with, as well as terms that may be new to you. Throughout Unit Two we will be discussing the impact of advertising techniques as well as learning how to incorporate persuasive techniques into our writing. Now that you have read through your assigned article, read the article for a second time looking for examples of the advertising and persuasive techniques listed on the handout. You will need to identify the author's claim by marking two pieces of text from the article. Not all of the techniques will be used in the article. You may choose to highlight and label the text, or underline and label as long as you are able to share your information with your peers. (teacher will model using "The Real Reason Taco Bell Killed Kids Meals") Oct 191:22 PM Check Your Work: You will have the next five minutes to work with another student who was assigned the same article as you. With your partner, you will discuss your annotations. Take this time to add to or change any ideas that you might have marked on your article. The Other Side of the Argument: Next, you will find a partner that has read the other article. Share your findings and respond to the following questions on the back of your article: 1. What stands out to you after reading both articles? 2. What do you find interesting about how the authors presented their claim? (dates written, quotes from CEO, etc.) 3. Which author has the strongest argument? Why? 4. What additional information could the authors have included to make their article even more persuasive to the audience? Oct 2312:39 PM
