French Food Connection

The seventh edition of the French Food Connection will take place in Chicago and Montreal on October 21 -24, 2013. This trade-only food show organized by Ubifrance North America brings together innovative French food suppliers with North American buyers looking to expand their gourmet offerings. From artisanal chocolates to delectable ready-to-eat meals, products for diverse pockets and palates will be presented in each city. Local importers, distributors, restaurateurs, specialty-food buyers, and trade press are expected to be in attendance.

French Food in the United States

Most Americans can appreciate the role of France in food and gastronomy... From Camembert to Chocolate here are some numbers that show just how much France is gaining market share on the continent!

American Market

The US market is the 7th largest export market for French food and wine exporters, the largest market outside of Europe! France represents 3.8% of American Agribusiness imports (including wine and spirits). France is the 6th largest agribusiness exporter (including beverages), following Canada, Mexico, China, Thailand, and Italy.

In terms of US imports, France is:

the 2nd largest supplier of food products in volume

the 6th largest supplier excluding wine and spirits

the 27th food supplier in value excluding wine and spirits

In 2010, exports of specialty food products to the US increased by 21% in volume and by 30% in value (GTA)

French products

The forecasts for French products are encouraging! France's products, expertise and brands are recognized and appreciated by Americans. Given the recent economic improvements and the sophistication of tastes, consumers are increasingly inclined to spend more for quality food products - corresponding perfectly with the range of gourmet products that France has to offer. The positioning of French products ranges from mid to high, the majority of which is in small qualitative volumes destined for gourmet food stores, fine supermarkets or foodservice. For this special event dedicated to French gastronomy, Ubifrance has selected French food companies, exemplary of French terroir and tradition.

French Wine in the United States

Most Americans can appreciate the extraordinary diversity of French wine. From Provence rosés to Burgundy reds, the following figures reveal how much France is gaining market share on the continent!

American Market

In 2011, the US became the world's leading country for wine consumption.

What's more, the latest Vinexpo study foresees that growth in American wine consumption will continue between 2012 and 2016, growing by 12.16%.

The US is the third largest wine importer worldwide in volume (behind the UK and Germany), the second in value. In 2011, approximately one bottle out of four consumed in the US was imported, equaling 27% of consumption.

The US has always been a crucial market for French wines: 3rd market in volume and 2nd in value (for all types of wines). After a few years of declining imports, France is back, with a gain of +3.7% in volume between 2010 and 2011.

According to the French Customs agency, French wine exports to the US have boomed between the first 9 months of 2011 and the first 9 months of 2012: +17% in volume, +20% in value. The regions leading this growth are Provence (Rosé) (+41% value), Bordeaux (+72% in value) and Languedoc-Roussillon (+27% volume), among others.

Still, even with this recent bump, according to the Wine Handbook 2012, French wine represents a mere 3% of the entire market. Now more than ever, French producers are eager to share their wines with Americans thirsty for a new experience.

Chef Marco Canora Marco Canora is the chef and owner of Hearth, Terroir, Terroir TriBeCa and Terroir Murray Hill in Manhattan, and the newly opened Terroir Park Slope in Brooklyn. He developed an appreciation for good food thanks to his mother's seasonal, Italian cooking and his extensive travels. Marco got his start in the New York City restaurant scene working under Tom Colicchio at Gramercy Tavern. Colicchio made him the restaurant's sous chef before selecting him to open Craft in 2001. During Marco's time at Craft, the restaurant earned the James Beard Award for "Best New Restaurant" and a three-star review from The New York Times. In 2003, Marco partnered with Paul Grieco to open Hearth, where Marco's seasonal American cooking with Italian influences has earned a loyal following and critical acclaim, including a nomination for The James Beard Award for "Best New Restaurant." In 2008, they opened Terroir, a wine bar just steps away from Hearth. A second location opened in TriBeCa in 2010, followed by one in Murray Hill in September 2011 and a Park Slope location in September 2012. Marco's first cookbook, "Salt to Taste," (Rodale Books, October 2009) was nominated in 2010 for the James Beard Foundation Cookbook Award in the General Cooking category.

Sommelier, Paul Grieco

Paul Grieco is the sommelier and owner of Hearth and Terroir wine bars in the East Village, TriBeCa, Murray Hill and Park Slope. The Canada native worked at Bouley, Gotham Bar & Grill and Gabriel's before opening JUdson Grill in 1994. He went on to the front of the house at Gramery Tavern, where during his tenure the restaurant won the James Beard Award for "Outstanding Service" and "Outstanding Wine Service."

In 2003, Paul and fellow Gramercy Tavern alum Marco Canora opened Hearth Restaurant in the East Village, which earned a glowing two-star New York Times review and praise for Paul's thoughtful wine list. In 2008 Terroir wine bar opened in the East Village, followed by Terroir TriBeCa in 2010 and Terroir Murray Hill in 2011. At Terroir, Paul has earned critical acclaim for his quirky wine lists and Summer of Riesling, a season-long, now nationwide extravaganza that has convinced legions of wine drinkers to appreciate the underrated grape. In 2012, Paul was named "Outstanding Wine, Beer or Spirits Professional" by the James Beard Foundation.

Company description

Perles en Gascogne was founded by Mr. CLAVIE in 1998 in the south West of France (Lot et Garonne): the country of prunes from Agen. Mr.CLAVIE was a grower of hazelnuts and already produced hazelnuts oil.

Company profile We (Philippe and Véronique GLAVIER) took over the family business in 1995, perpetuating the traditional champenoise methods of working. Located to the south of Reims, we produce wine on our own, exclusively from grapes we have grown. We belong to the category of Récoltant-Manipulant, and are members of the Independent Wine Growers of Champagne. We elaborate our own Champagne from A to Z: plantation, vineyard management, harvest, pressing, wine making and ageing. Final elaboration is carried out in our own premises in the village of Cramant. Château d’Astros, Provence

Company profile Château d'Astros is a 200-acre Provence vineyard based in Vidauban, in Var (between Nice and Marseille and north of St-Tropez). The estate has been in the Maurel family for the past 8 generations, with wine being produced on the estate since the 17th century. We produce 700 000 bottles, 70% of which are VDP and 80% rosé. Making rosé wine has become an art for us: we made big investments in 2011 to improve our wines (a new refrigeration system which enables us to cool down grapes as well as the must, two inert wine presses to avoid any oxygen contact, air-conditioning of both the bottling line and the storage facilities, and a very gentle sorting table combined to a distalker, especially adapted to rosé wine). We produce our IGP des Maures with the same care as our AOP. Our distribution network is well established in France (Cave Nicolas, Taittinger) and in several other countries (Great Britain, Bulgaria, Germany, Belgium, Canada, Brazil...). As Provence rosé has been booming on the North American market these past few years, we feel it is the right moment to present our Astros rosé wines and especially our Domaine d’Astros line, our main production.
