ACC Contract Negotiations

Fundamentalsof Sport

Strategic Direction Workshop

Through persistent advocacy, barriers to prescribing for the new ACC orthotics contracts have been removed. Assistance and communication resulted in a record number of podiatrists registering to take on new contracts. Regular meetings with ACC are providing PodiatryNZ with the opportunity to inform ACC and keep members up-to-date with current and future funding and rehabilitation

activities.

This was the launch of the Sport Special Interest group with the introduction of the Fundamentals of Sport training. The purpose being to ensure that members are building advanced competency on solid foundations. The aim of the sports podiatrist is to engage and deliver safe physical activity participation and training interventions to prevent injury, restore optimal function and contribute to the enhancement of

sports performance.

Held in Nelson February 2107, the PodiatryNZ Board invited additional attendees to provide some depth and breadth to the deliberations. It was agreed that to best meet the vision and mission, PodiatryNZ needs to focus on the patient or client of the PodiatryNZ member rather than the member themselves. To be successful, our members need to meet the needs of their patient’s or clients. Those needs are ever-changing - failing to keep up with those needs may mean members lose out to others who are better

at meeting those needs than them.

I graduated in 2008 with a bachelor of Health Science (Podiatry). I am currently contracted to Counties Manukau District Health Board as part of the Diabetes Secondary Podiatry and Rheumatoid Arthritis clinics. I work in a multi-disciplinary team as a Renal Podiatrist.

I have been working with Huakina Development Trust to deliver a tikanga based podiatry clinic at Nga Hau e Wha Marae and Ooraeroa Marae as part of their Whare Oranga Programme. Our association is a member of the Allied Health Network Aotearoa New Zealand (AHANZ). This is an association of almost 20 Allied Health Professional Associations. They represent the interests of the Allied Health profession and have networks through the health professions, DHB and the Ministry of Health. We keep connected this way, share our experiences and expertise and promote the roles and place of podiatry in the allied health landscape

Allied Health Network

PodiatryNZ has lead consultations on the Orthotic contract to ensure that PodiatryNZ members have been able to participate. Working with ACC’s Clinical Lead for Allied Health, PodiatryNZ’s aim is to promote the benefits of Podiatry and demonstrate where there is significant benefit to patients in either one on one care delivery or within a multidisciplinary approach.

ACC

The Ministry of Health having completed a number of heath strategy documents (Health of Older Person Strategy, The Diabetes Strategy and The Obesity Strategy) have not sought further public comments and PodiatryNZ has not had the opportunity to engage with the Ministry.

Ministry of Health

Our relationship with AUT is growing as we to encourage and engage with students. PodiatryNZ maintains a healthy dialogue with the Podiatry School and provides feedback and input into under and post graduate training.
