Fat-back & Molasses is a collection of favourite old recipes from
Newfoundland & Labrador. In addition to the homespun recipes, this book
contains sketches and stories that also give a deep insight into the culture
and life of a people very much in communion with nature and the joy of life.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
Life began for Ivan in Piapot, Saskatchewan, the fourth son and sixth child of
the village blacksmith, Art Jesperson. After his family moved to British
Columbia, he went to sea at 15 and sailed coastal and deeps ships from
Victoria, Vancouver and Montreal. After some time he was ordained into The
United Church of Canada and sent to Newfoundland on his first pastoral
charge. Rev. Ivan Jesperson arrived Newfoundland 1968 as clergyman for
United Church on Fogo Island. There he compiled recipes of Newfoundland
and Labrador in a cookbook entitled Fat-Back & Molasses. He also published
an island newsletter entitled The Fogo Island Profile. Moving to St. John's in
1972 he continued pastoral ministry in Wesley United Church until 1975 when
he began Jesperson Printing & Publishing. Jesperson left Newfoundland in
1987 and went on to the world of desktop publishing in Toronto and Ottawa.
Retiring from business in 1992, he re-entered pastoral work of The United
Church of Canada and served Aylwin Pastoral Charge in Kazabazua, Quebec
until his retirement in 2000. Since retirement he has returned to British
Columbia and lives in Victoria with his wife Mollie.

Dr. Joe Burke, a native Newfoundlander, enjoys a good story and delights in
telling stories about his fun loving countrymen. Someone has to keep the
humor mills running in Canada, he says, or we will all die of melancholy.
There is a little chance of that when you read, A Treasury of Newfoundland
Humor and Wit. Dr. Burke has provided for us a rare collection of the most
humorous anecdotes and wit attributed to the fun loving people of the happy
province. To add to your enjoyment, L B Jenson has contributed
immeasurably in providing illustrations that depict Newfoundland's scenic
beauty and way of life. To all the mainlanders who read this book we hope
that you will get a good impression of what it's like back'ome.

THIS BOOK IS the journey, and in a sense the journal of an artist who has
conducted a forty-five-year love affair with Newfoundland since he first set foot
there in 1966. Travelling to every inhabited corner of the island, he has
recorded his personal vision: painted almost entirely on-site, each image is
the story of one day in his life, and one day in the life of a community.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
Jean Claude Roy was born in Rochefort sur Mer, France, in 1948. Committed
to becoming an artist since childhood, he first came in Newfoundland as a
sailor with the French merchant marine at the age of 17. After living in
Newfoundland for a number of years and taking Canadian citizenship, he now
divides his time between France and Newfoundland. Entirely self-taught, he
described his style as expressionist-colourist. His works can be found in
public and private collections in the United States, Canada and Europe.

Triffie and Kit are closer than sisters. But for two girls growing up in a tiny
Newfoundland outport at the dawn of the twentieth century, having the same
dreams and ambitions doesn’t mean life will hand you the same opportunities.
A teacher’s certificate offers Kit the chance to explore the wider world, while
Triffie is left behind, living the life she never wanted with the man she swore
she’d never marry. The letters she and Kit exchange are her lifeline -- until a
long-buried secret threatens to destroy their friendship. That Forgetful Shore
is a story of friendship, love, faith and betrayal.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
Trudy Morgan-Cole is a writer and teacher. Her previous works of historical
fiction include The Violent Friendship of Esther Johnson, Deborah and Barak,
and Esther: A Story of Courage. She lives in St. John’s with her husband and
two children, and teaches English, writing, and social studies to adult learners
at The Murphy Centre.
REVIEWS

and girls with great precision and care, building a gripping novel of love, loss,
and ambition in the first half of the twentieth century.” - Kate Pullinger, author

Prissy Montgomery goes to great lengths to avoid having sex with her
husband, Howie. So when he confesses to having an affair, and requests a
divorce, she shouldn’t be all that surprised. With her fourteen-year-old son in
tow she leaves the comfort of her Toronto home and heads back to Paradise
Bay, her childhood home in Newfoundland. But Prissy’s mother, in an effort to
spare her daughter humiliation, takes out an obituary to announce Howie’s
untimely demise. Prissy is horrified by the deception, especially when her
childhood friend becomes widowed for real. When their son has an altercation
with the law, Howie, the “dead” husband, heads home to help, and his arrival
leaves the town of Paradise Bay reeling, with more questions than answers.
"The Widows of Paradise Bay ends with revelations, resolutions and reconciliations, just like any good down-home story."
The Globe and Mail

resides in Long Island with her husband and children. The Widows of

REVIEWS
"Sooley writes about contemporary life in today's Newfoundland in a way that
is absolutely authentic and captures both the pace and concerns of modern
life. This is Jill Sooley's first novel; I certainly hope it's not her last!" - Trudy
Morgan-Cole, Compulsive Overreader
"The Widows of Paradise Bay is a strong debut from Jill Sooley, well-paced,
and stocked with good dialogue and telling details: the plaid bathrobes, the
vinyl tablecloths, the TVs tuned to "The Price is Right... And the mood shifts,
which sometimes even careen from farce to grief to quotidian concerns, are
never out of hand, and instead feel realistic and believable. This is a good
read." - Joan Sullivan, The Telegram

The fourteen stories in this publication comprise a spectrum of characters and
events that have helped forge an image of an island, its people, and its culture
that is unique and compelling. Heroic deeds, great achievements, hardships
and deprivation, disasters, superstitions and customs, as well as the Beothuk
saga and the indomitable character of our ancestors, have all contributed to
the making of the modern-day Newfoundland and Labrador. Many of these
stories are based on actual events that have occurred over hundreds of years,
while others are purely fictional yet truly reflective of the uniqueness of the
province and its people.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
Drodge began his career as a writer following a thirty-four year career in the
computer industry. Born in Little Heart’s Ease, Trinity Bay, he moved to St.
John’s at a very early age where he was raised and educated. He had never
forgotten his outport roots, and had always maintained a great love for the
stories of “olden times."

If you could take just one thing back… Every Little Thing explores how lives
are shaped by the butterfly effect of decisions that go desperately wrong. After
a shocking family tragedy, Cohen Davies feels isolated, guilty, and numb to
everything except the allure of his new neighbor, Allie Crosbie. She’s a free
spirit, and he sees in her the perfect place to bury his troubles. But when
Allie’s father asks an unfathomable favour, Cohen’s decision to help him sets

shocking secret of her own. With his award-winning debut, Away From
Everywhere, Chad Pelley showed us his verve as a novelist; Every Little Thing
shows us the flipside of love, and Pelley cuts no corners in exposing how a
secret kept to protect love can just as easily destroy a life.
"Stylistically fresh, taut with emotional torques and charges, Pelley’s Every
Little Thing is can’t-put-it-down compelling." - - Lisa Moore, award-winning
author of February and Alligator
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
Chad Pelley is an award-winning author, songwriter, and photographer from
St. John’s, Newfoundland. His debut novel, Away from Everywhere, was a
Coles bestseller, won NLAC's CBC Emerging Artist of the Year Award, and
was shortlisted for both the ReLit Award and the Canadian Authors
Association Emerging Artist of the Year Award. It has been adopted by
university courses, and is currently being adapted for film. His short fiction
has been published in journals, textbooks, anthologies, and has been
recognized by close to ten awards. Chad is the founder of Salty Ink, President
of the Writers Alliance of Newfoundland & Labrador, and writes for a variety of
publications, including Quill & Quire, The National Post, and Atlantic Books
Today. As a result, he rarely sees more of the world than his computer
screen, and his hottest one-night stands happen in his own bed, with books of
Canadian fiction.
REVIEWS
From the cold clutch of a prison cell to the serenity of a lover’s arms and back
again, this is the tale of a man whose pugnacious heart is both literally and
figuratively broken. In Every Little Thing Chad Pelley delivers a transfixing
chronicle of what happens when devotion and jealousy ride alongside a
clumsy desire for a just world. Compulsively readable from start to finish. -
Billie Livingston, author of One Good Hustle and Cease to Blush
Chad Pelley's "Every Little Thing" is a compelling ride that shows that even
the unexpected leaves clear footprints. With finely-drawn characters that live
and breathe and clearly feel, it's a marriage of wistful and wonderful, spiced
with a sharp dash of the realities that we all face in life. It's bare honesty,
played hard. - Russell Wangersky, author of Whirl Away

As Silk Sails entertainingly demonstrates, existing records show that women
of the Atlantic region were owners of boats, ships and waterfront properties
from as early as 1650. Women’s involvement in early fishing adventures as
sole owners and “co-partners in trade” was real and substantial. This sample
of approximately 500 Newfoundland women depicts a hardy, durable and
tenacious woman who was more than equal to the challenges and
opportunities of her time. The study is complemented by interviews with some
of the women who had owned working ships from the 1930s to the 1960s. A
companion volume on more than 1,000 women ship owners of the Maritime
provinces, Ontario and Quebec is in progress.

Does the massive Kraken lurk off the coast of Newfoundland? Does Bigfoot
wander our forests and barrens? Have mermaids tempted fishermen in St.
John’s Harbour?
From stories of Native tradition and accounts of early European explorers to
contemporary sightings of predatory big cats and skulking lake monsters,
Here Be Dragons catalogues the strange creatures said to be prowling the
coves and forests of Newfoundland and Labrador. Author Bruce Hynes
combines history, anecdote, and folktale to deliver the unexplained, the
frightening, and the truly unusual in this engaging and thoroughly entertaining
book dedicated to all those who claim to have seen something peculiar
snaking beneath the swells or shifting through the shadows in our own
backyard.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
Bruce Hynes was born the son of a blacksmith in Norris Arm, Newfoundland
and Labrador, in 1940. His publications include The Eastport Peninsula: A
People of the Sea and Soil, The Noble Newfoundland Dog, and “One Hundred
Years of Canadian Military Mapping.” Apart from rescuing Newfoundland dogs,
he is a member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
REVIEWS
“Hynes writes engagingly well, and his book shows extensive research. His
commitment to the subject is academic caliber, while his writing style is
relaxed and reader-friendly. Hynes allows himself the occasional wry
comment regarding witness accounts, but he demonstrates serious regard for
his subject. ‘Here Be Dragons’ is a great read, and it’s as informative as it is
enjoyable.” - - The Western Star

The devastation of the North Atlantic cod stocks, particularly the tremendous
stocks of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Grand Banks, has become an
icon for the unsustainable relation between human exploitation and Nature.
Here, George Rose tells the full story of that devastation, in scientific detail,
for the first time – from the formation of the North Atlantic marine ecosystems
to the massive stock declines in the last half of the 20th century. Politics and
the fisheries are inextricably entwined. In Cod, Rose recounts the many
political influences on the fisheries over several centuries and describes how
neglect from the late 1800s onward led to insufficient scientific knowledge and
little protection for the stocks when massive Euro-Russian fleets targeted the
Grand Banks after World War II, destroying the greatest fishery the world has
known. Cod is no armchair account, but a controversial one that includes
original information on the North Atlantic fisheries.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
George Rose is one of Canada’s best known and most respected fisheries
scientists. He is widely considered to be the authority on the Newfoundland
and Labrador cod fishery. He was born in St. John’s, then attended school in
Ontario. He holds degrees in Fisheries and Wildlife Management from the
University of Guelph, in biology from Laurentian University, and holds a
doctorate in biology from McGill University. His main career interests have
been in the fisheries of the North Atlantic and in world-wide conservation,
particularly in Africa, on which he has published over 100 peer reviewed
publications. He lives on Three Island Pond in Paradise, Newfoundland.
REVIEWS
“This is an ambitious effort to tell the entire epic tale…It's a triumph of a book.
Cod is written in plain and lively language. Lushly illustrated and assiduously
researched, it cuts no corners but still deftly manages to weave the
fascinating human history of Newfoundland into the saga of its complex
marine ecology.” - Terry Glavin, Vancouver Sun

The Newfoundland armed forces suffered devastating losses during World War
I. Known unto God is a memorial to the men in these forces who died during
the war and who have no known graves. The book is also a companion guide
to the Memorial Bronze Tablets that list their names. The tablets were first
unveiled at the Newfoundland Memorial Park in Beaumont-Hamel, France, in
1925. Replicas of the tablets were erected in 2009 in Bowring Park in St.
John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Known unto God celebrates these men’s contributions and includes period
memorabilia and photographs from private and public collections, some of
which have never been published.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS
Frank Gogos was born and raised in St. John’s, NL. He holds a degree in
history and Newfoundland studies. An ardent historical researcher, he has
covered such topics as Newfoundland and the Great War, culture, and
genealogy, and chases the ghosts of individuals long past.
Morgan MacDonald is an emerging artist/bronze sculptor who has created
The Rower at Quidi Vidi Lake, A Time at George Street, and the replica of the
Bronze Tablets for Bowring Park (all in St. John’s, NL). Born in Corner Brook

Rogers Communications Award for Non-Fiction 2013, Short-listed
A soldier dies, a community vanishes…and a story is found.
When Steven Norris—a lieutenant with the famed Royal Newfoundland
Regiment—dies at the battle of Gueudecourt in 1916, his family business is
left without an heir. With the end of the Norris family mill, the once thriving
town of Three Arms disappears.
Almost 90 years later, a high-school theatre class mounts a successful
musical based on the life and death of Steven Norris. When the curtain drops,
a group of actors, teachers, and parents embark on a camping expedition to
Three Arms where they stumble upon the actual artifacts of Norris’s young
life.
A compelling history—part narrative, part documentary, part drama—Joan
Sullivan’s In the Field reminds us how one soldier’s great sacrifice can
resonate long after he has fallen.

end of his military career, he took a job with the Department of External
Affairs, spending two years at the Embassy in Moscow. Later he was a radio
operator offshore in Venezuela, the North Sea, and on the Ocean Ranger.
After this he began working for the United Nations as a Communications
Director, travelling to Khartoum, Sudan, with the UN World Food Program
during a time of rampant famine. To Be Frank brings to life the most
memorable adventures of this extraordinary Newfoundlander.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS

Newfoundland and Labrador, where he enjoys reading, writing, and music. He

REVIEWS
"Stolid, compassionate, self-assured, Christian, loyal. Frank Dyke would
appear to be a man more formed by the 19th century than the 20th." "[Dyke's]
observations of the enemy show a sensitivity that was rare in those terrible,
tumultuous days, and he weaves together enough personal and historical
detail to produce a vivid, striking portrait of a young, impressionable but
centred soldier caught up in catastrophic events" "A quick and easy read." -

The fishery, the seal cull, the settlement, the culture—the history of the
province of Newfoundland and Labrador has been shaped and witnessed from
the deck of sea-going vessels, and those vessels were sparred with local
timbers, planked and rigged by the hands of our master shipbuilders. From
east to west, north to south, Calvin Evans covers every coast and bay in a
sweeping chronicle of craftsmanship and productivity. While deftly countering
the outdated argument that our builders were inferior craftsmen, this history is
augmented by exhaustive lists of every builder on record from every corner of
the province. Impeccably researched and contextualized, Calvin Evans’s
Master Shipbuilders of Newfoundland and Labrador offers an indispensable
addition to the story of our past.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
Calvin D. Evans is a retired University Librarian. Born in Newfoundland, Evans
has lived and worked in six Canadian provinces, and is the author of two
previous books. For 100 years his family built ships for the Labrador and
Grand Banks fishery, and he has a continuing avid interest in maritime
history.

In the early hours of October 14, 1942, under cover of darkness, the German
submarine U-69 torpedoed and sank the passenger ferry SS Caribou off the
southwest coast of Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. Now, seventy years
later, writer and artist Jennifer Morgan recreates that eventful night in full
colour. These vivid illustrations, in comic book form, bring the history and
aftermath of the Caribou’s final voyage to life for a whole new generation of
readers.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
Jennifer Morgan is a visual artist and writer from St. John’s, Newfoundland.
Thomas Moyst, the Second Engineer of the S.S. Caribou, was her great-
grandfather. Although she never met him, Jennifer grew up hearing stories
from her grandmother, Violet Moyst Morgan, her father George Morgan, and
her aunts and uncles. This book is as true as the stories her family told about
the night the Caribou went down.
REVIEWS
"[A]imed at young readers, but the careful historical research, authentic story
